Design and Characterization of Hybrid Multilayer Structures: Layer-by-Layer Growth of Polymer and Graphene Oxide Assemblies and Their Utility in Fuel Cell Applications

We report the layer-by-layer growth of poly- (ethylenimine) (PEI) that has been modified with sulfamate functionalities (S-PEI) using Zr 4+ -complexation interlayer linking chemistry. We have also deposited adlayers of graphene oxide (GO) that have been modified to possess sulfate functionalities (SGO), onto the S-PEI layers. The multilayer assemblies are formed with sulfamate/sulfate and sulfate/sulfate (S-PEI + S-GO) interlayer linking chemistry. In all cases the adlayer thickness is consistent with predictions based on van der Waals volume and/or molecular mechanics calculations. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is used to characterize the Zr/S stoichiometry in the multilayer assembly. The utility of these hybrid multilayer structures is demonstrated in a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell, where they are shown to reduce H 2 gas crossover by 15% with only a 12 nm thick layer.

Aerospace Regenerative Fuel Cell Fluidic Component Design Challenges

A discrete regenerative fuel cell (RFC) system is currently under development at the NASA Glenn Research Center and Johnson Space Center. The objective of this activity is to produce an energy storage system with a higher specific energy (W·hr/kg) than the state-of-the-art battery technologies then test that system within an environment simulating the temperatures and pressures expected over a full lunar day cycle on the lunar surface. The system is designed to be as flight-like as possible given resource and commercially available technology limitations. The RFC system is comprised of a fuel cell power system, a high pressure electrolysis system, fluidic and electronic balance of plant systems, avionics, power management and distribution system, and software. This technical memorandum discusses components and subsystems that present challenges in developing flight ready RFCs. To remedy identified issues, functional application test plans are presented for components and subsystems primarily constructed with commercially available options due to the budget and schedule constraints of this ground technology demonstration project.

Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Transient Load Response

Spaceflight mission profiles may not be limited to constant power loads. It is necessary for the associated power system to support changes in load in addition to being energy dense. H2-O2 proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells can accommodate such requirements without significant current smoothing or additional devices to provide transient power. This testing involved current load step changes to characterize non-flow-through PEM fuel cell response to increasing and decreasing load step changes over a range of 0 to 0.5 A/sq. cm. It was determined that fuel cell output voltage stabilizes within 4 ms with no noticeable steady-state performance degradation, following exposure of the fuel cell to transient loads of up to ~1.5 A/sq. cm. Faster stabilization generally occurred following larger step changes.
