Abstract

OSIRIS-REx is a sample return mission that collected carbon-rich material from B-type asteroid Bennu. After landing on September 24th, 2023, the science canister was transported to NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, Texas where it was opened and samples were processed by the curation team in pristine sample nitrogen gloveboxes. As the sample analysis phase of the OSIRIS-REx mission concludes, the Sample Analysis Team (SAT) has returned the majority of mission samples to NASA JSC curation and will return the remaining samples on a defined timetable. The curation team processed and documented as many of these samples as possible to include in the spring 2026 catalog update and are steadily working to process hundreds of more samples to include in the fall 2026 catalog update.

Seismic Observations of the OSIRIS-REx Sample Return Capsule Reentry: Deployment, Signal Characteristics, and Wavefield Phenomenology

Controlled spacecraft reentries from interplanetary trajectories provide rare, well-characterized hypersonic sources for advancing seismoacoustic observation techniques. Here we present seismic observations of the OSIRIS-REx sample return capsule (SRC) reentry on 24 September 2023, recorded by 16 three-component nodal seismometers deployed near Eureka, Nevada, at ground distances of 7–20 km from the capsule trajectory. Air-to-ground coupled signals are detected at all stations, exhibiting impulsive onsets consistent with ballistic shock arrivals from the descending Mach cone. We characterize the seismic wavefield through signal amplitude, period, waveform cross-correlation, and array processing. Signal periods decrease systematically with increasing distance from the trajectory within the airport array, indicating that higher-frequency content becomes more prominent at greater offsets, opposite to expectations from geometric spreading and atmospheric absorption. Seismic array processing identifies frequency-dependent back-azimuth variations whose origin remains unresolved; possible contributing factors include source geometry, scattering by fine-scale layered structure in the stratosphere, and near-surface effects. These observations document a spatially complex seismic wavefield from a well-characterized hypersonic line source and provide constraints for future modeling of atmospheric propagation and air-to-ground coupling.

Preliminary Examination of Returned Samples From Bennu Using Quantitative Particle Analysis in the Scanning Electron Microscope

The sample of regolith collected from asteroid Bennu by NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft will land in Utah on September 24, 2023. A 100-mg aliquot of fine Bennu dust adhering to the internal surfaces of the sample return capsule and associated hardware will be collected by curation staff during disassembly and analyzed immediately by members of the sample analysis team in a “Quick-Look” (Q-L) procedure. The Q-L objectives are (1) to provide images for release to the public to inform on the nature of the returned sample, and (2) to perform a reconnaissance investigation of the mineralogic characteristics of the returned material for science purposes. We will determine the minerals that occur in the dust, assess their diversity, and determine relative abundances at the >5% level using a combination of optical microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Here we describe the procedures and techniques developed for the Q-L analyses using analog samples analyzed by SEM equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). To test these techniques, we have applied them to several samples, including powders of the Murchison (Fig. 1) and Orgueil meteorites, as well as simulant samples prepared by the mission.

Architecture and Operations of the OSIRIS-REx Independent Navigation Team

The Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) GoddardSpace Flight Center (GSFC) Independent Navigation Team (INT) performs center-finding and landmark-basedOptical Navigation (OpNav), Orbit Determination (OD), maneuver verification, and additional analyses in support ofnavigation operations motivated by a stringent set of science requirements. The INT has adopted a streamlined andagile approach to navigation operations support via a virtual operations environment, known as "OREX-NAV",which leverages existing capabilities of the Space Science Mission Operations (SSMO) virtual Multi-MissionOperations Center (vMMOC). The virtual environment architecture of OREX-NAV enables the INT to perform dailyoperational tasks and seamlessly interface with external mission networks, regardless of physical location. Throughthe automation and process adopted, the INT is able to keep pace with the rapid cadence of required deliverables.
