Abstract

Ba4Sm2Cd3S10 crystallizes in the orthorhombic Cmc2_1 space group. The structure is three-dimensional. there are four inequivalent Ba2+ sites. In the first Ba2+ site, Ba2+ is bonded in a 8-coordinate geometry to eight S2- atoms. There are a spread of Ba–S bond distances ranging from 3.17–3.68 Å. In the second Ba2+ site, Ba2+ is bonded to seven S2- atoms to form distorted BaS7 pentagonal bipyramids that share corners with two equivalent SmS6 octahedra, corners with two equivalent BaS7 pentagonal bipyramids, edges with three SmS6 octahedra, edges with three equivalent BaS7 pentagonal bipyramids, edges with two equivalent CdS4 tetrahedra, edges with two equivalent CdS4 trigonal pyramids, and faces with two equivalent BaS7 pentagonal bipyramids. The corner-sharing octahedral tilt angles are 16°. There are a spread of Ba–S bond distances ranging from 3.13–3.33 Å. In the third Ba2+ site, Ba2+ is bonded to seven S2- atoms to form distorted BaS7 pentagonal bipyramids that share corners with two equivalent SmS6 octahedra, corners with two equivalent BaS7 pentagonal bipyramids, corners with two equivalent CdS4 tetrahedra, corners with five CdS4 trigonal pyramids, edges with three SmS6 octahedra, edges with three equivalent BaS7 pentagonal bipyramids, an edgeedge with one CdS4 trigonal pyramid, and faces with two equivalent BaS7 pentagonal bipyramids. The corner-sharing octahedral tilt angles are 21°. There are a spread of Ba–S bond distances ranging from 3.18–3.38 Å. In the fourth Ba2+ site, Ba2+ is bonded in a 8-coordinate geometry to eight S2- atoms. There are a spread of Ba–S bond distances ranging from 3.15–3.59 Å. There are two inequivalent Sm3+ sites. In the first Sm3+ site, Sm3+ is bonded to six S2- atoms to form SmS6 octahedra that share corners with two equivalent BaS7 pentagonal bipyramids, edges with two equivalent SmS6 octahedra, edges with three BaS7 pentagonal bipyramids, and edges with four CdS4 trigonal pyramids. There are a spread of Sm–S bond distances ranging from 2.80–2.88 Å. In the second Sm3+ site, Sm3+ is bonded to six S2- atoms to form SmS6 octahedra that share corners with two equivalent BaS7 pentagonal bipyramids, corners with three equivalent CdS4 tetrahedra, edges with two equivalent SmS6 octahedra, and edges with three BaS7 pentagonal bipyramids. There are a spread of Sm–S bond distances ranging from 2.81–2.85 Å. There are three inequivalent Cd2+ sites. In the first Cd2+ site, Cd2+ is bonded to four S2- atoms to form CdS4 tetrahedra that share corners with three equivalent SmS6 octahedra, corners with two equivalent BaS7 pentagonal bipyramids, corners with two equivalent CdS4 tetrahedra, a cornercorner with one CdS4 trigonal pyramid, and edges with two equivalent BaS7 pentagonal bipyramids. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 5–72°. There are a spread of Cd–S bond distances ranging from 2.49–2.71 Å. In the second Cd2+ site, Cd2+ is bonded to four S2- atoms to form distorted CdS4 trigonal pyramids that share corners with two equivalent BaS7 pentagonal bipyramids, corners with two equivalent CdS4 trigonal pyramids, edges with two equivalent SmS6 octahedra, and an edgeedge with one BaS7 pentagonal bipyramid. There are a spread of Cd–S bond distances ranging from 2.46–2.74 Å. In the third Cd2+ site, Cd2+ is bonded to four S2- atoms to form distorted CdS4 trigonal pyramids that share corners with three equivalent BaS7 pentagonal bipyramids, a cornercorner with one CdS4 tetrahedra, corners with two equivalent CdS4 trigonal pyramids, edges with two equivalent SmS6 octahedra, and edges with two equivalent BaS7 pentagonal bipyramids. There are a spread of Cd–S bond distances ranging from 2.55–2.70 Å. There are ten inequivalent S2- sites. In the first S2- site, S2- is bonded to three Ba2+ and two equivalent Sm3+ atoms to form distorted SBa3Sm2 trigonal bipyramids that share corners with six SBa4Cd square pyramids, edges with two equivalent SBa4SmCd octahedra, edges with two SBa3Sm2 square pyramids, and edges with two equivalent SBa3Sm2 trigonal bipyramids. In the second S2- site, S2- is bonded to three Ba2+ and two equivalent Sm3+ atoms to form distorted SBa3Sm2 square pyramids that share corners with four equivalent SBa4Cd2 octahedra, corners with two equivalent SBa2SmCd2 square pyramids, corners with two equivalent SBa3Sm2 trigonal bipyramids, edges with five SBa4Cd2 octahedra, edges with three SBa3Sm2 square pyramids, and an edgeedge with one SBa3Sm2 trigonal bipyramid. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 40–51°. In the third S2- site, S2- is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to two equivalent Ba2+, one Sm3+, and two equivalent Cd2+ atoms. In the fourth S2- site, S2- is bonded to two equivalent Ba2+, one Sm3+, and two equivalent Cd2+ atoms to form distorted SBa2SmCd2 square pyramids that share corners with two equivalent SBa4Cd2 octahedra, corners with four SBa3Sm2 square pyramids, edges with three SBa4Cd2 octahedra, and edges with three SBa3Sm2 square pyramids. The corner-sharing octahedral tilt angles are 54°. In the fifth S2- site, S2- is bonded in a distorted trigonal non-coplanar geometry to two Ba2+, one Sm3+, and two equivalent Cd2+ atoms. In the sixth S2- site, S2- is bonded to four Ba2+ and one Cd2+ atom to form distorted SBa4Cd square pyramids that share corners with two equivalent SBa4SmCd octahedra, corners with two equivalent SBa2SmCd2 square pyramids, corners with four equivalent SBa3Sm2 trigonal bipyramids, an edgeedge with one SBa4SmCd octahedra, edges with two equivalent SBa4Cd square pyramids, and an edgeedge with one SBa3Sm2 trigonal bipyramid. The corner-sharing octahedral tilt angles are 40°. In the seventh S2- site, S2- is bonded to four Ba2+ and two Cd2+ atoms to form distorted SBa4Cd2 octahedra that share corners with six SBa4SmCd octahedra, corners with six SBa3Sm2 square pyramids, edges with two equivalent SBa4Cd2 octahedra, edges with two SBa2SmCd2 square pyramids, and faces with two SBa4SmCd octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 41–58°. In the eighth S2- site, S2- is bonded to four Ba2+, one Sm3+, and one Cd2+ atom to form SBa4SmCd octahedra that share corners with four SBa4Cd2 octahedra, corners with two equivalent SBa4Cd square pyramids, edges with three SBa4SmCd octahedra, edges with three SBa3Sm2 square pyramids, edges with two equivalent SBa3Sm2 trigonal bipyramids, and a faceface with one SBa4Cd2 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 21–54°. In the ninth S2- site, S2- is bonded in a 6-coordinate geometry to three Ba2+, two equivalent Sm3+, and one Cd2+ atom. In the tenth S2- site, S2- is bonded to three Ba2+, two equivalent Sm3+, and one Cd2+ atom to form SBa3Sm2Cd octahedra that share corners with six SBa4Cd2 octahedra, edges with three SBa4SmCd octahedra, edges with four SBa3Sm2 square pyramids, and a faceface with one SBa4Cd2 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 21–58°.

Cyclic moisture reactivation of calcium sorbents for long duration thermochemical energy storage

The transition to a flexible and reliable energy infrastructure, using electro-thermal energy generation technologies such as geothermal, concentrated solar power, and nuclear, usually demands simultaneous advancement of thermal energy storage (TES) to support on-demand electricity generation and industrial applications while mitigating the inherent intermittency of renewable energy sources and power outages from direct energy generation. Among TES technologies, thermochemical energy storage (TCES) based on calcium looping emerges as a compelling high-power energy storage candidate due to its high reaction enthalpy, compatibility with elevated operating temperatures, and abundance of low-cost materials. However, the long-term durability of calcium-based sorbents for TCES is hindered by surface sintering and particle aggregation, leading to performance degradation over repeated thermal cycles. This study explores a moisture hydration-based strategy to regenerate a degraded calcium sorbent and mitigate performance degradation for long duration TCES. The addition of moisture transforms calcium oxide into calcium hydroxide and produces intercalation water layers, associated with a regenerated surface area and reduced calcium oxide crystallite size. Both these effects are beneficial in restoring the sorbents' reactivity for carbonization. Additionally, an optimized hydration-assisted reactivation protocol balances the recovered energy storage capacity with heating penalty required for moisture removal from hydrated samples, resulting in an enhanced energy storage capacity up to 176% compared to benchmark sorbents that undergo cycling without reactivation after 60 cycles. In conclusion, these results highlight the potential of hydration-assisted reactivation to enhance the long-term performance of TCES, providing an effective pathway to advancing electro-thermal storage technologies.
