Abstract

Ni5(Mo3Se4)8 crystallizes in the triclinic P1 space group. The structure is three-dimensional. there are twenty-four inequivalent Mo+2.25+ sites. In the first Mo+2.25+ site, Mo+2.25+ is bonded to five Se2- atoms to form MoSe5 square pyramids that share corners with four MoSe5 square pyramids, corners with three NiSe4 tetrahedra, and edges with five MoSe5 square pyramids. There are a spread of Mo–Se bond distances ranging from 2.56–2.71 Å. In the second Mo+2.25+ site, Mo+2.25+ is bonded to five Se2- atoms to form MoSe5 square pyramids that share corners with four MoSe5 square pyramids, corners with two equivalent NiSe4 tetrahedra, and edges with five MoSe5 square pyramids. There are a spread of Mo–Se bond distances ranging from 2.56–2.70 Å. In the third Mo+2.25+ site, Mo+2.25+ is bonded to five Se2- atoms to form MoSe5 square pyramids that share corners with four MoSe5 square pyramids, edges with five MoSe5 square pyramids, and edges with two NiSe4 tetrahedra. There are a spread of Mo–Se bond distances ranging from 2.54–2.73 Å. In the fourth Mo+2.25+ site, Mo+2.25+ is bonded to five Se2- atoms to form MoSe5 square pyramids that share corners with four MoSe5 square pyramids, corners with two NiSe4 tetrahedra, and edges with five MoSe5 square pyramids. There are a spread of Mo–Se bond distances ranging from 2.58–2.75 Å. In the fifth Mo+2.25+ site, Mo+2.25+ is bonded to five Se2- atoms to form MoSe5 square pyramids that share corners with four MoSe5 square pyramids, corners with two equivalent NiSe4 tetrahedra, and edges with five MoSe5 square pyramids. There are a spread of Mo–Se bond distances ranging from 2.54–2.72 Å. In the sixth Mo+2.25+ site, Mo+2.25+ is bonded to five Se2- atoms to form MoSe5 square pyramids that share corners with four MoSe5 square pyramids, corners with four NiSe4 tetrahedra, and edges with five MoSe5 square pyramids. There are a spread of Mo–Se bond distances ranging from 2.54–2.71 Å. In the seventh Mo+2.25+ site, Mo+2.25+ is bonded to five Se2- atoms to form MoSe5 square pyramids that share corners with four MoSe5 square pyramids, corners with two NiSe4 tetrahedra, edges with five MoSe5 square pyramids, and an edgeedge with one NiSe4 tetrahedra. There are a spread of Mo–Se bond distances ranging from 2.55–2.68 Å. In the eighth Mo+2.25+ site, Mo+2.25+ is bonded to five Se2- atoms to form MoSe5 square pyramids that share corners with four MoSe5 square pyramids, a cornercorner with one NiSe4 tetrahedra, edges with five MoSe5 square pyramids, and a faceface with one NiSe4 tetrahedra. There are a spread of Mo–Se bond distances ranging from 2.55–2.74 Å. In the ninth Mo+2.25+ site, Mo+2.25+ is bonded to five Se2- atoms to form MoSe5 square pyramids that share corners with four MoSe5 square pyramids, a cornercorner with one NiSe4 tetrahedra, edges with five MoSe5 square pyramids, and an edgeedge with one NiSe4 tetrahedra. There are a spread of Mo–Se bond distances ranging from 2.55–2.69 Å. In the tenth Mo+2.25+ site, Mo+2.25+ is bonded to five Se2- atoms to form MoSe5 square pyramids that share corners with four MoSe5 square pyramids, a cornercorner with one NiSe4 tetrahedra, edges with five MoSe5 square pyramids, and an edgeedge with one NiSe4 tetrahedra. There are a spread of Ni–Se bond distances ranging from 2.34–2.46 Å. In the fourth Ni2+ site, Ni2+ is bonded to four Se2- atoms to form NiSe4 tetrahedra that share corners with eight MoSe5 square pyramids, edges with two MoSe5 square pyramids, and a faceface with one MoSe5 square pyramid. There are a spread of Ni–Se bond distances ranging from 2.33–2.48 Å. In the fifth Ni2+ site, Ni2+ is bonded to four Se2- atoms to form NiSe4 tetrahedra that share corners with eight MoSe5 square pyramids, edges with two MoSe5 square pyramids, and a faceface with one MoSe5 square pyramid. There are a spread of Ni–Se bond distances ranging from 2.33–2.49 Å. There are thirty-two inequivalent Se2- sites. In the first Se2- site, Se2- is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to four Mo+2.25+ and one Ni2+ atom. In the second Se2- site, Se2- is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to four Mo+2.25+ and one Ni2+ atom. Cyclic moisture reactivation of calcium sorbents for long duration thermochemical energy storage

The transition to a flexible and reliable energy infrastructure, using electro-thermal energy generation technologies such as geothermal, concentrated solar power, and nuclear, usually demands simultaneous advancement of thermal energy storage (TES) to support on-demand electricity generation and industrial applications while mitigating the inherent intermittency of renewable energy sources and power outages from direct energy generation. Among TES technologies, thermochemical energy storage (TCES) based on calcium looping emerges as a compelling high-power energy storage candidate due to its high reaction enthalpy, compatibility with elevated operating temperatures, and abundance of low-cost materials. However, the long-term durability of calcium-based sorbents for TCES is hindered by surface sintering and particle aggregation, leading to performance degradation over repeated thermal cycles. This study explores a moisture hydration-based strategy to regenerate a degraded calcium sorbent and mitigate performance degradation for long duration TCES. The addition of moisture transforms calcium oxide into calcium hydroxide and produces intercalation water layers, associated with a regenerated surface area and reduced calcium oxide crystallite size. Both these effects are beneficial in restoring the sorbents' reactivity for carbonization. Additionally, an optimized hydration-assisted reactivation protocol balances the recovered energy storage capacity with heating penalty required for moisture removal from hydrated samples, resulting in an enhanced energy storage capacity up to 176% compared to benchmark sorbents that undergo cycling without reactivation after 60 cycles. In conclusion, these results highlight the potential of hydration-assisted reactivation to enhance the long-term performance of TCES, providing an effective pathway to advancing electro-thermal storage technologies.
