Abstract

Ca2Ag7Al11Si13O48 crystallizes in the triclinic P1 space group. The structure is three-dimensional. there are two inequivalent Ca sites. In the first Ca site, Ca is bonded in a pentagonal planar geometry to five O atoms. There are a spread of Ca–O bond distances ranging from 2.19–2.48 Å. In the second Ca site, Ca is bonded in a pentagonal planar geometry to five O atoms. There are a spread of Ca–O bond distances ranging from 2.18–2.54 Å. There are seven inequivalent Ag sites. In the first Ag site, Ag is bonded in a distorted trigonal planar geometry to three O atoms. There are a spread of Ag–O bond distances ranging from 2.17–2.50 Å. In the second Ag site, Ag is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to three O atoms. There are a spread of Ag–O bond distances ranging from 2.18–2.47 Å. In the third Ag site, Ag is bonded in a 4-coordinate geometry to four O atoms. There are a spread of Ag–O bond distances ranging from 2.26–2.57 Å. In the fourth Ag site, Ag is bonded in a 4-coordinate geometry to four O atoms. There are a spread of Ag–O bond distances ranging from 2.26–2.66 Å. In the fifth Ag site, Ag is bonded in a distorted L-shaped geometry to two O atoms. There are one shorter (2.29 Å) and one longer (2.37 Å) Ag–O bond lengths. In the sixth Ag site, Ag is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to three O atoms. There are a spread of Ag–O bond distances ranging from 2.19–2.48 Å. In the seventh Ag site, Ag is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to three O atoms. There are a spread of Ag–O bond distances ranging from 2.20–2.44 Å. There are eleven inequivalent Al sites. In the first Al site, Al is bonded to four O atoms to form AlO4 tetrahedra that share corners with two AlO4 tetrahedra and corners with two SiO4 tetrahedra. There are a spread of Al–O bond distances ranging from 1.74–1.81 Å. In the second Al site, Al is bonded to four O atoms to form AlO4 tetrahedra that share corners with two AlO4 tetrahedra and corners with two SiO4 tetrahedra. There are a spread of Al–O bond distances ranging from 1.72–1.83 Å. In the third Al site, Al is bonded to four O atoms to form AlO4 tetrahedra that share a cornercorner with one SiO4 tetrahedra and corners with three AlO4 tetrahedra. There are a spread of Al–O bond distances ranging from 1.71–1.80 Å. In the fourth Al site, Al is bonded to four O atoms to form corner-sharing AlO4 tetrahedra. There are a spread of Al–O bond distances ranging from 1.74–1.78 Å. In the fifth Al site, Al is bonded to four O atoms to form AlO4 tetrahedra that share a cornercorner with one SiO4 tetrahedra and corners with three AlO4 tetrahedra. There are a spread of Al–O bond distances ranging from 1.74–1.80 Å. In the sixth Al site, Al is bonded to four O atoms to form corner-sharing AlO4 tetrahedra. There are a spread of Al–O bond distances ranging from 1.73–1.83 Å. In the seventh Al site, Al is bonded to four O atoms to form corner-sharing AlO4 tetrahedra. There are a spread of Al–O bond distances ranging from 1.71–1.80 Å. There are a spread of Si–O bond distances ranging from 1.63–1.66 Å. In the second Si site, Si is bonded to four O atoms to form SiO4 tetrahedra that share a cornercorner with one AlO4 tetrahedra and corners with three SiO4 tetrahedra. There are a spread of Si–O bond distances ranging from 1.61–1.65 Å. In the third Si site, Si is bonded to four O atoms to form SiO4 tetrahedra that share a cornercorner with one AlO4 tetrahedra and corners with three SiO4 tetrahedra. There are a spread of Si–O bond distances ranging from 1.57–1.67 Å. In the fourth Si site, Si is bonded to four O atoms to form SiO4 tetrahedra that share a cornercorner with one AlO4 tetrahedra and corners with three SiO4 tetrahedra. In the fourth O site, O is bonded in a bent 150 degrees geometry to two Si atoms. In the fifth O site, O is bonded in a bent 150 degrees geometry to two Si atoms. In the sixth O site, O is bonded in a distorted bent 150 degrees geometry to one Ag and two Si atoms. Cyclic moisture reactivation of calcium sorbents for long duration thermochemical energy storage

The transition to a flexible and reliable energy infrastructure, using electro-thermal energy generation technologies such as geothermal, concentrated solar power, and nuclear, usually demands simultaneous advancement of thermal energy storage (TES) to support on-demand electricity generation and industrial applications while mitigating the inherent intermittency of renewable energy sources and power outages from direct energy generation. Among TES technologies, thermochemical energy storage (TCES) based on calcium looping emerges as a compelling high-power energy storage candidate due to its high reaction enthalpy, compatibility with elevated operating temperatures, and abundance of low-cost materials. However, the long-term durability of calcium-based sorbents for TCES is hindered by surface sintering and particle aggregation, leading to performance degradation over repeated thermal cycles. This study explores a moisture hydration-based strategy to regenerate a degraded calcium sorbent and mitigate performance degradation for long duration TCES. The addition of moisture transforms calcium oxide into calcium hydroxide and produces intercalation water layers, associated with a regenerated surface area and reduced calcium oxide crystallite size. Both these effects are beneficial in restoring the sorbents' reactivity for carbonization. Additionally, an optimized hydration-assisted reactivation protocol balances the recovered energy storage capacity with heating penalty required for moisture removal from hydrated samples, resulting in an enhanced energy storage capacity up to 176% compared to benchmark sorbents that undergo cycling without reactivation after 60 cycles. In conclusion, these results highlight the potential of hydration-assisted reactivation to enhance the long-term performance of TCES, providing an effective pathway to advancing electro-thermal storage technologies.
