Abstract

Ba2Sr3Nb10O30 crystallizes in the triclinic P1 space group. The structure is three-dimensional. there are two inequivalent Ba2+ sites. In the first Ba2+ site, Ba2+ is bonded in a 6-coordinate geometry to nine O2- atoms. There are a spread of Ba–O bond distances ranging from 2.74–3.18 Å. In the second Ba2+ site, Ba2+ is bonded in a 7-coordinate geometry to seven O2- atoms. There are a spread of Ba–O bond distances ranging from 2.80–2.97 Å. There are three inequivalent Sr2+ sites. In the first Sr2+ site, Sr2+ is bonded in a 4-coordinate geometry to nine O2- atoms. There are a spread of Sr–O bond distances ranging from 2.60–3.14 Å. In the second Sr2+ site, Sr2+ is bonded to twelve O2- atoms to form SrO12 cuboctahedra that share faces with two equivalent SrO12 cuboctahedra and faces with eight NbO6 octahedra. There are a spread of Sr–O bond distances ranging from 2.67–2.91 Å. In the third Sr2+ site, Sr2+ is bonded to twelve O2- atoms to form SrO12 cuboctahedra that share faces with two equivalent SrO12 cuboctahedra and faces with eight NbO6 octahedra. There are a spread of Sr–O bond distances ranging from 2.66–2.94 Å. There are ten inequivalent Nb5+ sites. In the first Nb5+ site, Nb5+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form NbO6 octahedra that share corners with six NbO6 octahedra and faces with two equivalent SrO12 cuboctahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 10–37°. There are a spread of Nb–O bond distances ranging from 1.87–2.21 Å. In the second Nb5+ site, Nb5+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form NbO6 octahedra that share corners with six NbO6 octahedra and faces with two equivalent SrO12 cuboctahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 8–39°. There are a spread of Nb–O bond distances ranging from 1.89–2.19 Å. In the third Nb5+ site, Nb5+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form NbO6 octahedra that share corners with six NbO6 octahedra and faces with two equivalent SrO12 cuboctahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 10–42°. There are a spread of Nb–O bond distances ranging from 1.89–2.21 Å. In the fourth Nb5+ site, Nb5+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form NbO6 octahedra that share corners with six NbO6 octahedra and faces with two equivalent SrO12 cuboctahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 6–47°. There are a spread of Nb–O bond distances ranging from 1.90–2.17 Å. In the fifth Nb5+ site, Nb5+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form NbO6 octahedra that share corners with six NbO6 octahedra and faces with two equivalent SrO12 cuboctahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 7–42°. There are a spread of Nb–O bond distances ranging from 1.90–2.17 Å. In the sixth Nb5+ site, Nb5+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form NbO6 octahedra that share corners with six NbO6 octahedra and faces with two equivalent SrO12 cuboctahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 12–47°. There are a spread of Nb–O bond distances ranging from 1.88–2.21 Å. In the seventh Nb5+ site, Nb5+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form NbO6 octahedra that share corners with six NbO6 octahedra and faces with two equivalent SrO12 cuboctahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 7–39°. There are a spread of Nb–O bond distances ranging from 1.89–2.18 Å. In the eighth Nb5+ site, Nb5+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form distorted NbO6 octahedra that share corners with six NbO6 octahedra and faces with two equivalent SrO12 cuboctahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 10–42°. There are a spread of Nb–O bond distances ranging from 1.86–2.22 Å. In the ninth Nb5+ site, Nb5+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form corner-sharing NbO6 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 1–42°. There are a spread of Nb–O bond distances ranging from 1.86–2.21 Å. In the tenth Nb5+ site, Nb5+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form distorted corner-sharing NbO6 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 11–38°. There are a spread of Nb–O bond distances ranging from 1.84–2.25 Å. There are thirty inequivalent O2- sites. In the first O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted linear geometry to one Ba2+, one Sr2+, and two equivalent Nb5+ atoms. In the second O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to one Ba2+ and two equivalent Nb5+ atoms. In the third O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 4-coordinate geometry to two equivalent Sr2+ and two Nb5+ atoms. In the fourth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to two equivalent Sr2+ and two Nb5+ atoms. In the fifth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted linear geometry to two equivalent Sr2+ and two Nb5+ atoms. In the sixth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to two equivalent Sr2+ and two Nb5+ atoms. In the seventh O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to two equivalent Sr2+ and two Nb5+ atoms. In the eighth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to two equivalent Sr2+ and two Nb5+ atoms. In the ninth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to two equivalent Sr2+ and two Nb5+ atoms. In the tenth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 4-coordinate geometry to two equivalent Sr2+ and two Nb5+ atoms. In the eleventh O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted bent 150 degrees geometry to two equivalent Ba2+ and two Nb5+ atoms. In the twelfth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to two equivalent Sr2+ and two Nb5+ atoms. In the thirteenth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a bent 150 degrees geometry to two Nb5+ atoms. In the fourteenth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to two equivalent Ba2+ and two Nb5+ atoms. In the fifteenth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to two equivalent Ba2+ and two Nb5+ atoms. In the sixteenth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a bent 150 degrees geometry to two Nb5+ atoms. In the seventeenth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted bent 150 degrees geometry to two equivalent Ba2+ and two Nb5+ atoms. In the eighteenth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 4-coordinate geometry to two equivalent Sr2+ and two Nb5+ atoms. In the nineteenth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to one Sr2+ and two equivalent Nb5+ atoms. In the twentieth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to one Sr2+ and two equivalent Nb5+ atoms. In the twenty-first O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to one Ba2+, one Sr2+, and two equivalent Nb5+ atoms. In the twenty-second O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to two Sr2+ and two equivalent Nb5+ atoms. In the twenty-third O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to one Ba2+, one Sr2+, and two equivalent Nb5+ atoms. In the twenty-fourth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to two Sr2+ and two equivalent Nb5+ atoms. In the twenty-fifth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to one Sr2+ and two equivalent Nb5+ atoms. In the twenty-sixth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to one Sr2+ and two equivalent Nb5+ atoms. In the twenty-seventh O2- site, O2- is bonded in a bent 150 degrees geometry to two Nb5+ atoms. In the twenty-eighth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 4-coordinate geometry to two equivalent Ba2+ and two Nb5+ atoms. In the twenty-ninth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 4-coordinate geometry to two equivalent Ba2+ and two Nb5+ atoms. In the thirtieth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 4-coordinate geometry to two equivalent Sr2+ and two Nb5+ atoms.

Cyclic moisture reactivation of calcium sorbents for long duration thermochemical energy storage

The transition to a flexible and reliable energy infrastructure, using electro-thermal energy generation technologies such as geothermal, concentrated solar power, and nuclear, usually demands simultaneous advancement of thermal energy storage (TES) to support on-demand electricity generation and industrial applications while mitigating the inherent intermittency of renewable energy sources and power outages from direct energy generation. Among TES technologies, thermochemical energy storage (TCES) based on calcium looping emerges as a compelling high-power energy storage candidate due to its high reaction enthalpy, compatibility with elevated operating temperatures, and abundance of low-cost materials. However, the long-term durability of calcium-based sorbents for TCES is hindered by surface sintering and particle aggregation, leading to performance degradation over repeated thermal cycles. This study explores a moisture hydration-based strategy to regenerate a degraded calcium sorbent and mitigate performance degradation for long duration TCES. The addition of moisture transforms calcium oxide into calcium hydroxide and produces intercalation water layers, associated with a regenerated surface area and reduced calcium oxide crystallite size. Both these effects are beneficial in restoring the sorbents' reactivity for carbonization. Additionally, an optimized hydration-assisted reactivation protocol balances the recovered energy storage capacity with heating penalty required for moisture removal from hydrated samples, resulting in an enhanced energy storage capacity up to 176% compared to benchmark sorbents that undergo cycling without reactivation after 60 cycles. In conclusion, these results highlight the potential of hydration-assisted reactivation to enhance the long-term performance of TCES, providing an effective pathway to advancing electro-thermal storage technologies.
