Abstract

La4PO8Cl crystallizes in the monoclinic P2_1/c space group. The structure is three-dimensional. there are eight inequivalent La3+ sites. In the first La3+ site, La3+ is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to six O2- and one Cl1- atom. There are a spread of La–O bond distances ranging from 2.32–3.05 Å. The La–Cl bond length is 3.30 Å. In the second La3+ site, La3+ is bonded in a 7-coordinate geometry to six O2- and one Cl1- atom. There are a spread of La–O bond distances ranging from 2.40–2.62 Å. The La–Cl bond length is 3.18 Å. In the third La3+ site, La3+ is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to five O2- and two Cl1- atoms. There are a spread of La–O bond distances ranging from 2.34–2.66 Å. There are one shorter (3.08 Å) and one longer (3.44 Å) La–Cl bond lengths. In the fourth La3+ site, La3+ is bonded in a 8-coordinate geometry to eight O2- atoms. There are a spread of La–O bond distances ranging from 2.42–2.66 Å. In the fifth La3+ site, La3+ is bonded in a 7-coordinate geometry to five O2- and two Cl1- atoms. There are a spread of La–O bond distances ranging from 2.35–2.60 Å. There are one shorter (2.95 Å) and one longer (3.17 Å) La–Cl bond lengths. In the sixth La3+ site, La3+ is bonded in a 6-coordinate geometry to six O2- atoms. There are a spread of La–O bond distances ranging from 2.31–2.70 Å. In the seventh La3+ site, La3+ is bonded in a 8-coordinate geometry to six O2- and one Cl1- atom. There are a spread of La–O bond distances ranging from 2.36–2.64 Å. The La–Cl bond length is 3.28 Å. In the eighth La3+ site, La3+ is bonded in a 7-coordinate geometry to six O2- and one Cl1- atom. There are a spread of La–O bond distances ranging from 2.34–2.74 Å. The La–Cl bond length is 3.10 Å. There are two inequivalent P5+ sites. In the first P5+ site, P5+ is bonded in a tetrahedral geometry to four O2- atoms. There is three shorter (1.55 Å) and one longer (1.58 Å) P–O bond length. In the second P5+ site, P5+ is bonded in a tetrahedral geometry to four O2- atoms. There is two shorter (1.55 Å) and two longer (1.56 Å) P–O bond length. There are sixteen inequivalent O2- sites. In the first O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to two La3+ and one P5+ atom. In the second O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to two La3+, one P5+, and one Cl1- atom. The O–Cl bond length is 2.91 Å. In the third O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to two equivalent La3+ and one P5+ atom. In the fourth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to two La3+ and one P5+ atom. In the fifth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to two La3+ and one P5+ atom. In the sixth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to two La3+ and one P5+ atom. In the seventh O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to two La3+, one P5+, and one Cl1- atom. The O–Cl bond length is 3.33 Å. In the eighth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to two La3+, one P5+, and one Cl1- atom. The O–Cl bond length is 3.01 Å. In the ninth O2- site, O2- is bonded to four La3+ atoms to form a mixture of corner and edge-sharing OLa4 tetrahedra. In the tenth O2- site, O2- is bonded to four La3+ atoms to form OLa4 tetrahedra that share corners with four OLa4Cl tetrahedra and edges with four OLa4 tetrahedra. In the eleventh O2- site, O2- is bonded to four La3+ atoms to form a mixture of corner and edge-sharing OLa4 tetrahedra. In the twelfth O2- site, O2- is bonded to four La3+ atoms to form a mixture of corner and edge-sharing OLa4 tetrahedra. In the thirteenth O2- site, O2- is bonded to four La3+ and one Cl1- atom to form a mixture of distorted corner and edge-sharing OLa4Cl tetrahedra. The O–Cl bond length is 3.33 Å. In the fourteenth O2- site, O2- is bonded to four La3+ and one Cl1- atom to form distorted OLa4Cl tetrahedra that share corners with five OLa4Cl tetrahedra and edges with four OLa4 tetrahedra. The O–Cl bond length is 3.35 Å. In the fifteenth O2- site, O2- is bonded to four La3+ atoms to form a mixture of corner and edge-sharing OLa4 tetrahedra. In the sixteenth O2- site, O2- is bonded to four La3+ atoms to form OLa4 tetrahedra that share corners with four OLa4Cl tetrahedra and edges with four OLa4 tetrahedra. There are two inequivalent Cl1- sites. In the first Cl1- site, Cl1- is bonded in a 4-coordinate geometry to four La3+, four O2-, and one Cl1- atom. The Cl–Cl bond length is 3.34 Å. In the second Cl1- site, Cl1- is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to four La3+, one O2-, and one Cl1- atom.

Cyclic moisture reactivation of calcium sorbents for long duration thermochemical energy storage

The transition to a flexible and reliable energy infrastructure, using electro-thermal energy generation technologies such as geothermal, concentrated solar power, and nuclear, usually demands simultaneous advancement of thermal energy storage (TES) to support on-demand electricity generation and industrial applications while mitigating the inherent intermittency of renewable energy sources and power outages from direct energy generation. Among TES technologies, thermochemical energy storage (TCES) based on calcium looping emerges as a compelling high-power energy storage candidate due to its high reaction enthalpy, compatibility with elevated operating temperatures, and abundance of low-cost materials. However, the long-term durability of calcium-based sorbents for TCES is hindered by surface sintering and particle aggregation, leading to performance degradation over repeated thermal cycles. This study explores a moisture hydration-based strategy to regenerate a degraded calcium sorbent and mitigate performance degradation for long duration TCES. The addition of moisture transforms calcium oxide into calcium hydroxide and produces intercalation water layers, associated with a regenerated surface area and reduced calcium oxide crystallite size. Both these effects are beneficial in restoring the sorbents' reactivity for carbonization. Additionally, an optimized hydration-assisted reactivation protocol balances the recovered energy storage capacity with heating penalty required for moisture removal from hydrated samples, resulting in an enhanced energy storage capacity up to 176% compared to benchmark sorbents that undergo cycling without reactivation after 60 cycles. In conclusion, these results highlight the potential of hydration-assisted reactivation to enhance the long-term performance of TCES, providing an effective pathway to advancing electro-thermal storage technologies.
