Abstract

Y4ZrMn5O15 crystallizes in the triclinic P1 space group. The structure is three-dimensional. there are eight inequivalent Y3+ sites. In the first Y3+ site, Y3+ is bonded in a distorted body-centered cubic geometry to eight O2- atoms. There are a spread of Y–O bond distances ranging from 2.31–2.81 Å. In the second Y3+ site, Y3+ is bonded in a 7-coordinate geometry to seven O2- atoms. There are a spread of Y–O bond distances ranging from 2.26–2.68 Å. In the third Y3+ site, Y3+ is bonded to seven O2- atoms to form distorted YO7 pentagonal bipyramids that share corners with three MnO5 trigonal bipyramids, edges with two equivalent YO7 hexagonal pyramids, an edgeedge with one ZrO7 pentagonal bipyramid, and edges with three MnO5 trigonal bipyramids. There are a spread of Y–O bond distances ranging from 2.29–2.42 Å. In the fourth Y3+ site, Y3+ is bonded to seven O2- atoms to form distorted YO7 hexagonal pyramids that share corners with three MnO5 trigonal bipyramids, edges with two equivalent YO7 pentagonal bipyramids, edges with two equivalent ZrO7 pentagonal bipyramids, and edges with three MnO5 trigonal bipyramids. There are a spread of Y–O bond distances ranging from 2.29–2.37 Å. In the fifth Y3+ site, Y3+ is bonded in a distorted body-centered cubic geometry to eight O2- atoms. There are a spread of Y–O bond distances ranging from 2.30–2.81 Å. In the sixth Y3+ site, Y3+ is bonded in a 7-coordinate geometry to seven O2- atoms. There are a spread of Y–O bond distances ranging from 2.25–2.79 Å. In the seventh Y3+ site, Y3+ is bonded in a 7-coordinate geometry to seven O2- atoms. There are a spread of Y–O bond distances ranging from 2.24–2.57 Å. In the eighth Y3+ site, Y3+ is bonded to seven O2- atoms to form distorted YO7 pentagonal bipyramids that share corners with three MnO5 trigonal bipyramids, an edgeedge with one ZrO7 pentagonal bipyramid, and edges with three MnO5 trigonal bipyramids. There are a spread of Y–O bond distances ranging from 2.26–2.41 Å. There are two inequivalent Zr3+ sites. In the first Zr3+ site, Zr3+ is bonded to seven O2- atoms to form distorted ZrO7 pentagonal bipyramids that share corners with three MnO5 trigonal bipyramids, edges with two equivalent YO7 hexagonal pyramids, an edgeedge with one YO7 pentagonal bipyramid, and edges with three MnO5 trigonal bipyramids. There are a spread of Zr–O bond distances ranging from 2.12–2.29 Å. In the second Zr3+ site, Zr3+ is bonded to seven O2- atoms to form distorted ZrO7 pentagonal bipyramids that share corners with three MnO5 trigonal bipyramids, an edgeedge with one YO7 pentagonal bipyramid, and edges with three MnO5 trigonal bipyramids. There are a spread of Zr–O bond distances ranging from 2.14–2.29 Å. There are ten inequivalent Mn3+ sites. In the first Mn3+ site, Mn3+ is bonded to five O2- atoms to form MnO5 trigonal bipyramids that share a cornercorner with one YO7 hexagonal pyramid, a cornercorner with one YO7 pentagonal bipyramid, corners with six MnO5 trigonal bipyramids, an edgeedge with one YO7 pentagonal bipyramid, and an edgeedge with one ZrO7 pentagonal bipyramid. There are a spread of Mn–O bond distances ranging from 1.91–2.14 Å. In the second Mn3+ site, Mn3+ is bonded to five O2- atoms to form MnO5 trigonal bipyramids that share a cornercorner with one YO7 hexagonal pyramid, a cornercorner with one YO7 pentagonal bipyramid, corners with six MnO5 trigonal bipyramids, and an edgeedge with one YO7 pentagonal bipyramid. There are a spread of Mn–O bond distances ranging from 1.91–2.21 Å. In the second O2- site, O2- is bonded to three Y3+ and one Mn3+ atom to form OY3Mn tetrahedra that share corners with ten OY2ZrMn tetrahedra, corners with three OYMn3 trigonal pyramids, edges with three OY3Mn tetrahedra, and an edgeedge with one OY2Mn3 trigonal bipyramid. Cyclic moisture reactivation of calcium sorbents for long duration thermochemical energy storage

The transition to a flexible and reliable energy infrastructure, using electro-thermal energy generation technologies such as geothermal, concentrated solar power, and nuclear, usually demands simultaneous advancement of thermal energy storage (TES) to support on-demand electricity generation and industrial applications while mitigating the inherent intermittency of renewable energy sources and power outages from direct energy generation. Among TES technologies, thermochemical energy storage (TCES) based on calcium looping emerges as a compelling high-power energy storage candidate due to its high reaction enthalpy, compatibility with elevated operating temperatures, and abundance of low-cost materials. However, the long-term durability of calcium-based sorbents for TCES is hindered by surface sintering and particle aggregation, leading to performance degradation over repeated thermal cycles. This study explores a moisture hydration-based strategy to regenerate a degraded calcium sorbent and mitigate performance degradation for long duration TCES. The addition of moisture transforms calcium oxide into calcium hydroxide and produces intercalation water layers, associated with a regenerated surface area and reduced calcium oxide crystallite size. Both these effects are beneficial in restoring the sorbents' reactivity for carbonization. Additionally, an optimized hydration-assisted reactivation protocol balances the recovered energy storage capacity with heating penalty required for moisture removal from hydrated samples, resulting in an enhanced energy storage capacity up to 176% compared to benchmark sorbents that undergo cycling without reactivation after 60 cycles. In conclusion, these results highlight the potential of hydration-assisted reactivation to enhance the long-term performance of TCES, providing an effective pathway to advancing electro-thermal storage technologies.
