Abstract

Y2(InPb)3 crystallizes in the orthorhombic Pmmm space group. The structure is three-dimensional. Y is bonded to six In and six Pb atoms to form YIn6Pb6 cuboctahedra that share corners with eight PbY4In4 cuboctahedra, corners with twelve equivalent YIn6Pb6 cuboctahedra, edges with eight PbY4In4 cuboctahedra, edges with twelve InY4In2Pb6 cuboctahedra, faces with two equivalent PbY4In8 cuboctahedra, faces with six equivalent YIn6Pb6 cuboctahedra, and faces with six InY4In2Pb6 cuboctahedra. There are two shorter (3.39 Å) and four longer (3.40 Å) Y–In bond lengths. There are two shorter (3.37 Å) and four longer (3.38 Å) Y–Pb bond lengths. There are two inequivalent In sites. In the first In site, In is bonded to four equivalent Y, two equivalent In, and six Pb atoms to form distorted InY4In2Pb6 cuboctahedra that share corners with eight PbY4In4 cuboctahedra, corners with twelve equivalent InY4In2Pb6 cuboctahedra, edges with four equivalent InY4In4Pb4 cuboctahedra, edges with eight equivalent YIn6Pb6 cuboctahedra, edges with eight PbY4In4 cuboctahedra, faces with two equivalent PbY4In8 cuboctahedra, faces with four equivalent YIn6Pb6 cuboctahedra, and faces with eight InY4In2Pb6 cuboctahedra. Both In–In bond lengths are 3.36 Å. There are two shorter (3.37 Å) and four longer (3.40 Å) In–Pb bond lengths. In the second In site, In is bonded to four equivalent Y, four equivalent In, and four equivalent Pb atoms to form distorted InY4In4Pb4 cuboctahedra that share corners with four equivalent InY4In4Pb4 cuboctahedra, corners with eight equivalent PbY4In4 cuboctahedra, edges with eight equivalent YIn6Pb6 cuboctahedra, edges with eight equivalent InY4In2Pb6 cuboctahedra, edges with eight equivalent PbY4In4 cuboctahedra, faces with four equivalent YIn6Pb6 cuboctahedra, faces with six PbY4In4 cuboctahedra, and faces with eight InY4In2Pb6 cuboctahedra. All In–Pb bond lengths are 3.40 Å. There are three inequivalent Pb sites. In the first Pb site, Pb is bonded to four equivalent Y and four equivalent In atoms to form distorted PbY4In4 cuboctahedra that share corners with eight equivalent YIn6Pb6 cuboctahedra, corners with sixteen InY4In2Pb6 cuboctahedra, edges with four equivalent YIn6Pb6 cuboctahedra, edges with four equivalent InY4In2Pb6 cuboctahedra, edges with twelve PbY4In4 cuboctahedra, faces with two equivalent InY4In4Pb4 cuboctahedra, and faces with four equivalent PbY4In4 cuboctahedra. In the second Pb site, Pb is bonded to four equivalent Y and eight In atoms to form PbY4In8 cuboctahedra that share corners with twelve PbY4In8 cuboctahedra, edges with eight equivalent YIn6Pb6 cuboctahedra, edges with eight equivalent InY4In2Pb6 cuboctahedra, edges with eight equivalent PbY4In4 cuboctahedra, faces with four equivalent YIn6Pb6 cuboctahedra, faces with six PbY4In8 cuboctahedra, and faces with eight InY4In2Pb6 cuboctahedra. In the third Pb site, Pb is bonded to four equivalent Y and four equivalent In atoms to form distorted PbY4In4 cuboctahedra that share corners with eight equivalent YIn6Pb6 cuboctahedra, corners with eight equivalent InY4In2Pb6 cuboctahedra, corners with eight equivalent PbY4In8 cuboctahedra, edges with four equivalent YIn6Pb6 cuboctahedra, edges with four equivalent PbY4In4 cuboctahedra, edges with twelve InY4In2Pb6 cuboctahedra, and faces with six PbY4In4 cuboctahedra.

Cyclic moisture reactivation of calcium sorbents for long duration thermochemical energy storage

The transition to a flexible and reliable energy infrastructure, using electro-thermal energy generation technologies such as geothermal, concentrated solar power, and nuclear, usually demands simultaneous advancement of thermal energy storage (TES) to support on-demand electricity generation and industrial applications while mitigating the inherent intermittency of renewable energy sources and power outages from direct energy generation. Among TES technologies, thermochemical energy storage (TCES) based on calcium looping emerges as a compelling high-power energy storage candidate due to its high reaction enthalpy, compatibility with elevated operating temperatures, and abundance of low-cost materials. However, the long-term durability of calcium-based sorbents for TCES is hindered by surface sintering and particle aggregation, leading to performance degradation over repeated thermal cycles. This study explores a moisture hydration-based strategy to regenerate a degraded calcium sorbent and mitigate performance degradation for long duration TCES. The addition of moisture transforms calcium oxide into calcium hydroxide and produces intercalation water layers, associated with a regenerated surface area and reduced calcium oxide crystallite size. Both these effects are beneficial in restoring the sorbents' reactivity for carbonization. Additionally, an optimized hydration-assisted reactivation protocol balances the recovered energy storage capacity with heating penalty required for moisture removal from hydrated samples, resulting in an enhanced energy storage capacity up to 176% compared to benchmark sorbents that undergo cycling without reactivation after 60 cycles. In conclusion, these results highlight the potential of hydration-assisted reactivation to enhance the long-term performance of TCES, providing an effective pathway to advancing electro-thermal storage technologies.
