Abstract

SrTi3Al8O19 crystallizes in the monoclinic C2 space group. The structure is three-dimensional. there are two inequivalent Sr2+ sites. In the first Sr2+ site, Sr2+ is bonded to twelve O2- atoms to form distorted SrO12 cuboctahedra that share corners with two equivalent SrO12 cuboctahedra, corners with five AlO6 octahedra, a cornercorner with one AlO4 tetrahedra, an edgeedge with one TiO6 octahedra, edges with two AlO6 octahedra, an edgeedge with one AlO4 tetrahedra, faces with two SrO12 cuboctahedra, a faceface with one AlO6 octahedra, and faces with five TiO6 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 44–53°. There are a spread of Sr–O bond distances ranging from 2.63–3.04 Å. In the second Sr2+ site, Sr2+ is bonded to twelve O2- atoms to form distorted SrO12 cuboctahedra that share corners with two equivalent SrO12 cuboctahedra, corners with five AlO6 octahedra, a cornercorner with one AlO4 tetrahedra, edges with three AlO6 octahedra, an edgeedge with one AlO4 tetrahedra, faces with two SrO12 cuboctahedra, a faceface with one AlO6 octahedra, and faces with five TiO6 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 45–53°. There are a spread of Sr–O bond distances ranging from 2.65–3.05 Å. There are seven inequivalent Ti4+ sites. In the first Ti4+ site, Ti4+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form TiO6 octahedra that share a cornercorner with one TiO6 octahedra, corners with four AlO6 octahedra, corners with three AlO4 tetrahedra, and edges with three AlO6 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 46–53°. There are a spread of Ti–O bond distances ranging from 1.86–2.16 Å. In the second Ti4+ site, Ti4+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form TiO6 octahedra that share a cornercorner with one TiO6 octahedra, corners with four AlO6 octahedra, corners with three AlO4 tetrahedra, an edgeedge with one TiO6 octahedra, and edges with two AlO6 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 47–51°. There are a spread of Ti–O bond distances ranging from 1.85–2.16 Å. In the third Ti4+ site, Ti4+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form TiO6 octahedra that share corners with three AlO6 octahedra, corners with four TiO6 octahedra, a cornercorner with one AlO4 tetrahedra, an edgeedge with one AlO6 octahedra, and faces with three SrO12 cuboctahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 13–54°. There are a spread of Ti–O bond distances ranging from 1.90–2.19 Å. In the fourth Ti4+ site, Ti4+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form distorted TiO6 octahedra that share corners with three AlO6 octahedra, corners with four TiO6 octahedra, a cornercorner with one AlO4 tetrahedra, an edgeedge with one AlO6 octahedra, and faces with three SrO12 cuboctahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 14–54°. There are a spread of Ti–O bond distances ranging from 1.86–2.25 Å. In the fifth Ti4+ site, Ti4+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form distorted TiO6 octahedra that share corners with two equivalent AlO6 octahedra, corners with four TiO6 octahedra, edges with three AlO6 octahedra, and faces with four SrO12 cuboctahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 13–19°. There are a spread of Ti–O bond distances ranging from 1.86–2.19 Å. In the sixth Ti4+ site, Ti4+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form distorted TiO6 octahedra that share corners with two equivalent AlO6 octahedra, corners with four TiO6 octahedra, edges with three AlO6 octahedra, and faces with four SrO12 cuboctahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 14–17°. There are a spread of Ti–O bond distances ranging from 1.86–2.19 Å. In the seventh Ti4+ site, Ti4+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form TiO6 octahedra that share corners with two TiO6 octahedra, corners with two AlO6 octahedra, corners with two AlO4 tetrahedra, an edgeedge with one SrO12 cuboctahedra, an edgeedge with one TiO6 octahedra, and edges with three AlO6 octahedra. In the third Al3+ site, Al3+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form AlO6 octahedra that share corners with three SrO12 cuboctahedra, a cornercorner with one TiO6 octahedra, corners with two AlO6 octahedra, corners with two AlO4 tetrahedra, edges with two TiO6 octahedra, and edges with three AlO6 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 51–52°. There are a spread of Al–O bond distances ranging from 1.82–2.14 Å. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 49–62°. There are a spread of Al–O bond distances ranging from 1.76–1.82 Å. In the tenth Al3+ site, Al3+ is bonded to four O2- atoms to form AlO4 tetrahedra that share a cornercorner with one SrO12 cuboctahedra, a cornercorner with one TiO6 octahedra, corners with eight AlO6 octahedra, and an edgeedge with one SrO12 cuboctahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 49–63°. There are a spread of Al–O bond distances ranging from 1.76–1.82 Å. In the eleventh Al3+ site, Al3+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form AlO6 octahedra that share corners with two equivalent SrO12 cuboctahedra, corners with four AlO4 tetrahedra, an edgeedge with one TiO6 octahedra, and edges with six AlO6 octahedra. There are a spread of Al–O bond distances ranging from 1.90–1.92 Å. In the twelfth Al3+ site, Al3+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form AlO6 octahedra that share corners with two equivalent SrO12 cuboctahedra, corners with four AlO4 tetrahedra, an edgeedge with one TiO6 octahedra, and edges with six AlO6 octahedra. There are a spread of Al–O bond distances ranging from 1.90–1.92 Å. In the thirteenth Al3+ site, Al3+ is bonded to four O2- atoms to form AlO4 tetrahedra that share corners with four TiO6 octahedra and corners with seven AlO6 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 54–65°. There are a spread of Al–O bond distances ranging from 1.78–1.83 Å. In the fourteenth Al3+ site, Al3+ is bonded to four O2- atoms to form AlO4 tetrahedra that share corners with four TiO6 octahedra and corners with seven AlO6 octahedra. The corner-sharing octahedra tilt angles range from 53–63°. There are a spread of Al–O bond distances ranging from 1.77–1.83 Å. In the fifteenth Al3+ site, Al3+ is bonded to six O2- atoms to form AlO6 octahedra that share corners with two TiO6 octahedra, corners with two AlO6 octahedra, a cornercorner with one AlO4 tetrahedra, an edgeedge with one SrO12 cuboctahedra, an edgeedge with one TiO6 octahedra, and edges with four AlO6 octahedra. In the fourth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to two Sr2+, two Ti4+, and one Al3+ atom. In the fifth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to one Sr2+ and three Al3+ atoms. In the sixth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 4-coordinate geometry to one Sr2+ and three Al3+ atoms. In the seventh O2- site, O2- is bonded in a trigonal planar geometry to one Ti4+ and two Al3+ atoms. In the eighth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a trigonal planar geometry to one Ti4+ and two Al3+ atoms. In the ninth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to one Sr2+, two Ti4+, and one Al3+ atom. In the tenth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 4-coordinate geometry to one Sr2+, one Ti4+, and two Al3+ atoms. In the eleventh O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to one Sr2+

Cyclic moisture reactivation of calcium sorbents for long duration thermochemical energy storage

The transition to a flexible and reliable energy infrastructure, using electro-thermal energy generation technologies such as geothermal, concentrated solar power, and nuclear, usually demands simultaneous advancement of thermal energy storage (TES) to support on-demand electricity generation and industrial applications while mitigating the inherent intermittency of renewable energy sources and power outages from direct energy generation. Among TES technologies, thermochemical energy storage (TCES) based on calcium looping emerges as a compelling high-power energy storage candidate due to its high reaction enthalpy, compatibility with elevated operating temperatures, and abundance of low-cost materials. However, the long-term durability of calcium-based sorbents for TCES is hindered by surface sintering and particle aggregation, leading to performance degradation over repeated thermal cycles. This study explores a moisture hydration-based strategy to regenerate a degraded calcium sorbent and mitigate performance degradation for long duration TCES. The addition of moisture transforms calcium oxide into calcium hydroxide and produces intercalation water layers, associated with a regenerated surface area and reduced calcium oxide crystallite size. Both these effects are beneficial in restoring the sorbents' reactivity for carbonization. Additionally, an optimized hydration-assisted reactivation protocol balances the recovered energy storage capacity with heating penalty required for moisture removal from hydrated samples, resulting in an enhanced energy storage capacity up to 176% compared to benchmark sorbents that undergo cycling without reactivation after 60 cycles. In conclusion, these results highlight the potential of hydration-assisted reactivation to enhance the long-term performance of TCES, providing an effective pathway to advancing electro-thermal storage technologies.
