Abstract

V6Pb4H2Se3O26 crystallizes in the monoclinic P2_1 space group. The structure is three-dimensional. there are six inequivalent V5+ sites. In the first V5+ site, V5+ is bonded in a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry to five O2- atoms. There are a spread of V–O bond distances ranging from 1.68–2.03 Å. In the second V5+ site, V5+ is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to five O2- atoms. There are a spread of V–O bond distances ranging from 1.65–2.12 Å. In the third V5+ site, V5+ is bonded in a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry to five O2- atoms. There are a spread of V–O bond distances ranging from 1.67–2.03 Å. In the fourth V5+ site, V5+ is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to five O2- atoms. There are a spread of V–O bond distances ranging from 1.66–2.01 Å. In the fifth V5+ site, V5+ is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to five O2- atoms. There are a spread of V–O bond distances ranging from 1.65–1.98 Å. In the sixth V5+ site, V5+ is bonded in a 5-coordinate geometry to five O2- atoms. There are a spread of V–O bond distances ranging from 1.65–2.07 Å. There are four inequivalent Pb+2.50+ sites. In the first Pb+2.50+ site, Pb+2.50+ is bonded in a 8-coordinate geometry to eight O2- atoms. There are a spread of Pb–O bond distances ranging from 2.48–2.97 Å. In the second Pb+2.50+ site, Pb+2.50+ is bonded in a 8-coordinate geometry to eight O2- atoms. There are a spread of Pb–O bond distances ranging from 2.53–2.89 Å. In the third Pb+2.50+ site, Pb+2.50+ is bonded in a 9-coordinate geometry to nine O2- atoms. There are a spread of Pb–O bond distances ranging from 2.51–2.96 Å. In the fourth Pb+2.50+ site, Pb+2.50+ is bonded in a 7-coordinate geometry to seven O2- atoms. There are a spread of Pb–O bond distances ranging from 2.46–2.84 Å. There are two inequivalent H1+ sites. In the first H1+ site, H1+ is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one O2- atom. The H–O bond length is 0.98 Å. In the second H1+ site, H1+ is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to two O2- atoms. There is one shorter (1.00 Å) and one longer (1.69 Å) H–O bond length. There are three inequivalent Se+3.33+ sites. In the first Se+3.33+ site, Se+3.33+ is bonded in a trigonal non-coplanar geometry to three O2- atoms. There are a spread of Se–O bond distances ranging from 1.72–1.79 Å. In the second Se+3.33+ site, Se+3.33+ is bonded in a trigonal non-coplanar geometry to three O2- atoms. There are a spread of Se–O bond distances ranging from 1.72–1.79 Å. In the third Se+3.33+ site, Se+3.33+ is bonded in a distorted trigonal non-coplanar geometry to three O2- atoms. There is one shorter (1.68 Å) and two longer (1.78 Å) Se–O bond length. There are twenty-six inequivalent O2- sites. In the first O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted bent 120 degrees geometry to one V5+, one Pb+2.50+, and one Se+3.33+ atom. In the second O2- site, O2- is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one V5+ and two Pb+2.50+ atoms. In the third O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to three Pb+2.50+ and one Se+3.33+ atom. In the fourth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted bent 120 degrees geometry to one V5+ and one Se+3.33+ atom. In the fifth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to one V5+ and two Pb+2.50+ atoms. In the sixth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to two V5+ and one Pb+2.50+ atom. In the seventh O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 2-coordinate geometry to two V5+ and one Pb+2.50+ atom. In the eighth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to three V5+ atoms. In the ninth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to one V5+ and one Pb+2.50+ atom. In the tenth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to three Pb+2.50+ and one Se+3.33+ atom. In the eleventh O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted bent 120 degrees geometry to one V5+, one Pb+2.50+, and one Se+3.33+ atom. In the twelfth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to one V5+ and two Pb+2.50+ atoms. In the thirteenth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to two Pb+2.50+ and one Se+3.33+ atom. In the fourteenth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to one V5+ and two Pb+2.50+ atoms. In the fifteenth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to one V5+ and two Pb+2.50+ atoms. In the sixteenth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 1-coordinate geometry to one Pb+2.50+, one H1+, and one Se+3.33+ atom. In the seventeenth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one V5+ and one Pb+2.50+ atom. In the eighteenth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to three V5+ atoms. In the nineteenth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted bent 150 degrees geometry to one V5+ and one Se+3.33+ atom. In the twentieth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one V5+ and one Pb+2.50+ atom. In the twenty-first O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted single-bond geometry to one V5+ and two Pb+2.50+ atoms. In the twenty-second O2- site, O2- is bonded in a 3-coordinate geometry to two Pb+2.50+ and one Se+3.33+ atom. In the twenty-third O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted trigonal non-coplanar geometry to three V5+ atoms. In the twenty-fourth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a distorted trigonal non-coplanar geometry to three V5+ atoms. In the twenty-fifth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one V5+ and one Pb+2.50+ atom. In the twenty-sixth O2- site, O2- is bonded in a water-like geometry to one Pb+2.50+ and two H1+ atoms.

Cyclic moisture reactivation of calcium sorbents for long duration thermochemical energy storage

The transition to a flexible and reliable energy infrastructure, using electro-thermal energy generation technologies such as geothermal, concentrated solar power, and nuclear, usually demands simultaneous advancement of thermal energy storage (TES) to support on-demand electricity generation and industrial applications while mitigating the inherent intermittency of renewable energy sources and power outages from direct energy generation. Among TES technologies, thermochemical energy storage (TCES) based on calcium looping emerges as a compelling high-power energy storage candidate due to its high reaction enthalpy, compatibility with elevated operating temperatures, and abundance of low-cost materials. However, the long-term durability of calcium-based sorbents for TCES is hindered by surface sintering and particle aggregation, leading to performance degradation over repeated thermal cycles. This study explores a moisture hydration-based strategy to regenerate a degraded calcium sorbent and mitigate performance degradation for long duration TCES. The addition of moisture transforms calcium oxide into calcium hydroxide and produces intercalation water layers, associated with a regenerated surface area and reduced calcium oxide crystallite size. Both these effects are beneficial in restoring the sorbents' reactivity for carbonization. Additionally, an optimized hydration-assisted reactivation protocol balances the recovered energy storage capacity with heating penalty required for moisture removal from hydrated samples, resulting in an enhanced energy storage capacity up to 176% compared to benchmark sorbents that undergo cycling without reactivation after 60 cycles. In conclusion, these results highlight the potential of hydration-assisted reactivation to enhance the long-term performance of TCES, providing an effective pathway to advancing electro-thermal storage technologies.
