Nuclear spin features relevant to ab initio nucleon-nucleus elastic scattering

Abstract

Effective interactions for elastic nucleon-nucleus scattering from first principles require the use of the same nucleon-nucleon interaction in the structure and reaction calculations, as well as a consistent treatment of the relevant operators at each order. Previous work using these interactions has shown good agreement with available data. Here, we study the physical relevance of one of these operators, which involves the spin of the struck nucleon, and examine the interpretation of this quantity in a nuclear structure context. Using the framework of the spectator expansion and the underlying framework of the no-core shell model, we calculate and examine spin-projected, one-body momentum distributions required for effective nucleon-nucleus interactions in $J=0$ nuclear states. The calculated spin-projected, one-body momentum distributions for $^4$He, $^6$He, and $^8$He display characteristic behavior based on the occupation of protons and neutrons in single particle levels, with more nucleons of one type yielding momentum distributions with larger values. Additionally, we find this quantity is strongly correlated to the magnetic moment of the $2^+$ excited state in the ground state rotational band for each nucleus considered. In conclusion, we find that spin-projected, one-body momentum distributions can probe the spin content of a $J=0$ wave function. This feature may allow future ab initio nucleon-nucleus scattering studies to inform spin properties of the underlying nucleon-nucleon interactions. The observed correlation to the magnetic moment of excited states illustrates a previously unknown connection between reaction observables such as the analyzing power and structure observables like the magnetic moment.

Low-energy 17 O(𝑛,𝛾)⁢ 18 O reaction within the microscopic potential model and its role for the weak 𝑟 process

The neutron radiative capture reaction 17 O ⁡(𝑛,𝛾) ⁢18 O plays a pivotal role in both nuclear structure studies and astrophysical nucleosynthesis, particularly in the formation of elements during hydrostatic and explosive stellar environments. We calculated the 17 O ⁡(𝑛,𝛾) ⁢18 O cross section within the Skyrme Hartree-Fock potential model and analyzed electric dipole 𝐸⁢1 transitions to both positive- and negative-parity states below the α-decay threshold in 18 O. Our cross sections are significantly different from the data available in commonly used libraries. We further investigate the impact of the new calculated cross section on weak 𝑟-process nucleosynthesis using large-scale reaction network calculations across a wide range of electron fractions and entropies. Our results show that the 17 O ⁡(𝑛,𝛾) ⁢18 O reaction rate significantly influences the production of first 𝑟-process peak elements, such as strontium, under specific astrophysical conditions. This study highlights the importance of accurate nuclear data for light isotopes in modeling heavy-element synthesis and provides updated reaction rates for future nucleosynthesis simulations.

Nonmonotonic-potential description of polarization effects, fusion, and nuclear rainbows in elastic scattering of 6 Li + 12 C at 4.5–600 MeV

The experimental differential cross-section (CS) and analyzing power (AP) data of the 6 Li + 12 C elastic scattering over a wide laboratory energy scale (4.5MeV≤𝐸 lab ≤600MeV) are analyzed within the framework of the optical model (OPM) using nonmonotonic (NM) nucleus–nucleus potentials. The real part of the NM potentials is derived from the Pauli-embodied energy density-functional (EDF) formalism with the sudden approximation. The real part of the noncentral spin-orbit and tensor terms, as well as the imaginary parts, are treated phenomenologically. The effect of the radius of sensitivity on the CS and AP data is found to be more important at lower energies. The diffractive and refractive scattering with Airy structures in the whole angular region of the elastic scattering across the studied energy range is successfully described within the OPM using the NM 6 Li + 12 C potential. The near- and far-side (N and F) decomposition of the total elastic-scattering amplitudes has also been studied using our NM potentials. The evolution of the Airy minima in the angular distributions, coupled with the fitting of the AP data, provides an accurate description of Airy minima of different orders. The OPM calculations with the NM potentials describe exceptionally well the CS, vector analyzing power (VAP), and tensor analyzing power data at 𝐸 lab =9.0,19.24,20,30, and 50MeV. In agreement with our past successful descriptions of CS and the opposite signs of the VAP data for the 6 Li and 7 Li elastic scattering using NM potentials in OPM, the present results appear to provide a better fit, so far, than those obtained from the coupled-channels method. The fusion cross sections of 6 Li + 12 C have been predicted in the energy range (4.5MeV≤𝐸 lab ≤20MeV), fitting the experimental data well in the range 𝐸 lab =2.97–11.77MeV. The EDF potential without any energy dependence and renormalization is also found to describe satisfactorily the experimental CS and AP data at energies up to several hundreds of MeV.

Properties of states near 𝐸 𝑥 = 6 MeV in 18 Ne through 17 F +𝑝 scattering

The rate of energy production in the hot-CNO cycle and breakout to the rapid-proton capture process in Type I X-ray bursts is strongly related to the 14 O⁡(𝛼,𝑝)⁢ 17 F reaction rate. The properties of states in 18 Ne near 𝐸 𝑥 = 6.1–6.3 MeV are important for understanding the 14 O⁡(𝛼,𝑝)⁢ 17 F reaction rate. In order to study 18 Ne resonances around this energy region, the RESOLUT radioactive-ion beam facility at Florida State University was used to perform 17 F⁡(𝑝,𝑝)⁢ 17 F elastic scattering on a polypropylene target under inverse kinematics. Scattered protons were detected in a silicon-strip detector array while recoiling 17 F ions were detected in coincidence in a gas ionization detector. An 𝑅-matrix analysis of measured cross sections was conducted along with a reanalysis of data from previous 17 F +𝑝 measurements. All the data analyzed are well described by a consistent set of parameters with a 1 − assignment for a state at 6.14(1) MeV. A second comparable solution is also found with a 3 − assignment for the 6.14(1) MeV state. There is no conclusive evidence supporting one of the two solutions over the other. The rates of the 14 O⁡(𝛼,p)⁢ 17 F reaction that are determined from the two solutions differ by up to an order of magnitude.
