Preliminary Technoeconomic Analysis for Power Generation from Coal Water Slurry Using Modular Staged-OMB Gasifier

Abstract

Trimeric performed a technoeconomic analysis for a proposed 5 MWe gross modular gasification power generation facility. The cost estimate was used to determine the economic advantages of the proposed modular, staged-OMB gasifier in comparison to other modular gasifier designs. The project, Staged OMB for Modular Gasifier/Burner, is led by The University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research (UK CAER) and supported by East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) and Trimeric Corporation. A high-level summary of the findings from this project are presented below.

Ultrafast Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Reactions at Unit Quantum Yield

Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions mediate essential biological energy-conversion processes, yet dynamical experiments that distinguish concerted electron/proton motion from sequential electron-transfer/proton-transfer pathways are unprecedented on ultrafast time scales. Here we report a tightly coupled donor–spacer–acceptor assembly, NDI-Sp-PhOH/BI, that enables direct interrogation of light-triggered and ultrafast PCET dynamics. Photoexcitation of the naphthalene diimide chromophore drives charge separation forming NDI radical anion and benzimidazolium phenoxy radical (PhO●/BIH+) products with a 440 fs time constant, followed by thermal charge recombination on a 5 ps time scale. Transient visible/near-infrared and mid-infrared spectroscopies independently track electron and proton motion and reveal coincident formation and decay of the charge-separated PCET products, excluding detectable phenol radical cation or phenoxide intermediates expected for sequential electron transfer-proton transfer (ET-PT) pathways. Surface-hopping quasiclassical trajectory simulations demonstrate rapid proton relocation coupled to evolution from locally excited to charge-transfer states, congruent with a concerted mechanism. These combined spectroscopic and computational results establish NDI-Sp-PhOH/BI as an archetype for ultrafast, concerted PCET occurring with unit quantum yield; further, because this platform provides distinct electronic and vibrational spectroscopic handles in its ground, electronically excited, and charge-separated states, it provides new opportunities to characterize mechanistic crossover in biomimetic PCET systems.

Modeling and analysis of synthetic liquid fuel production from CO 2 and nuclear energy using methanol-to-diesel process

Electrofuels (e-fuels) are synthetic fuels produced from carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and electricity for blending with or replacing petroleum fuels. Nuclear energy is an attractive energy feedstock for e-fuel production because of its low environmental footprint and its ability to provide steady heat and power essential for e-fuels production. We modeled and evaluated the cost and environmental footprint of e-fuels production in the distillate range for three nuclear power scales, 100, 500, and 1000 MWe, through methanol and olefins intermediates leveraging commercial or high technology readiness level (TRL) processes. Compared to the commonly studied e-fuels from Fischer Tropsch process that has a distillate yield of <70% with the rest being low value naphtha, the proposed process via methanol intermediate increases the product selectivity with distillate yield of 96% and only 4% naphtha. The modeled process has a carbon conversion ratio of 98%, and a process energy efficiency of 56% relative to the total equivalent nuclear electricity input. The e-fuel plant economics and GHG emissions were estimated by considering CO 2 collected from ethanol plants adjacent to nuclear power plants. The estimated minimum fuel selling prices (MFSP) of e-fuel is in the range of $5.7-$9.1/gal depending on e-fuel plant scale, electricity cost, and CO 2 transportation distance. The corresponding e-fuels life cycle GHG emissions is estimated in the range of 5-6 gCO 2 e/MJ of liquid fuel using the R&D Greenhouse gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy use in Technologies (R&D GREET) model.

Spin Polarization Enhanced Ethanol Selectivity in Electrocatalytic CO 2 Reduction on the Paramagnetic CuO Surface

We report an electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction catalyzed by a paramagnetic and conductive CuO/Cu interface with spins polarized by a moderate external magnetic field (MF) of similar to 800 gauss, achieving a similar to 30% increase in CO 2 -to-C 2+ Faradaic efficiency (FE) compared to that in the absence of the MF in a flow cell electrolyzer. At a current density of 400 mA/cm 2 , the CO 2 -to-C 2+ FE reached 86.7 ± 2.7% with 47.9 ± 1.4% cathodic energy efficiency (EE) in contrast to the CO 2 -to-C 2+ FE of 67.6% with 36.4% of EE in the absence of MF. Notably, ethanol production exhibits a much higher response to the MF (similar to 55.6% increase in FE) than ethylene (similar to 6.4% increase in FE) at 400 mA/cm 2 . In situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) captured magnetic-field-enhanced *CO coverage and ethanol-forming C 2 intermediates on CuO/Cu, providing direct spectroscopic evidence of spin-modulated pathway selection. Here, computational study suggests that the enhancement of ethanol selectivity is due to the reduced reaction kinetic barrier under MF, while the ethylene selectivity is less affected, mainly due to the insensitivity of the kinetic barriers under MF.
