Observation and Modeling of Dynamic Fracture Behaviors of Battery Cell Under Impact Loading Using Enhanced Representative Volume Element Concept

The burgeoning electric automobile industry has increased interest in battery safety. Battery cells experience significant mechanical stress during operation, including the impact of accidents and vibrations from driving. The potential for thermal runaway reactions in battery cells raises safety concerns. Although numerous researchers have defined the dynamic behavior of battery cells and proposed numerical models to describe it, few studies have focused on the high-strain rate mechanical impact phase correlated with the onset of fracture. In this study, we describe the dynamic behavior of pouch battery cells and propose a modeling method to study their mechanical failure under impact situations. Impact tests are conducted at various velocities and heights. To overcome numerical issues commonly encountered under rapid deformation scenarios, a new finite element model is developed based on the representative volume element model. The proposed approach efficiently simulates continuous crack propagation and brittleness behavior during impact by permitting the individual behavior of the cell components. Therefore, engineers can reliably design safer electric vehicle battery cells by measuring the properties of the cell components.

Fabrication, Modeling, and Testing of a Prototype for Particle Thermal Energy Storage Containment

Increasing penetration of variable renewable energy resources requires the deployment of energy storage at a range of durations. Long-duration energy storage (LDES) technologies will fulfill the need to firm variable renewable energy resource output throughout the year. Conventional electrochemical batteries (e.g., lithium-ion) are uneconomical in this role due to high energy capacity costs. Thermal energy storage (TES) is one promising technology for LDES applications because of its siting flexibility and ease of scaling. Particle-based TES systems use low-cost solid particles that have higher temperature limits than the molten salts used in traditional concentrated solar power systems. A key component in particle-based TES systems is the containment silo for the high-temperature (> 1100 degrees C) particles. This study combined experimental testing and computational modeling methods to design and characterize the performance of a particle containment silo for LDES applications. A containment silo prototype was built at a laboratory scale and used to validate a congruent transient finite element analysis (FEA) model. The validation compared the actual and predicted temperature profile through the prototype over six days as the particles cooled from their initial temperature. The performance of a commercial scale (> 5 GWhth) was then characterized using the validated model. The transient FEA model was subject to several charge-discharge cycles to mimic a possible operating schedule. The commercial-scale model predicted a storage efficiency in excess of 95% after five days of storage with a design storage temperature of 1200 degrees C. Insulation material and concrete temperature limits were considered as well. The validation of the methodology means the FEA model can simulate a range of scenarios for future applications. This work supports the development of a promising LDES technology with implications for grid-scale electrical energy storage, but also for thermal energy storage for industrial process heating applications.

Sulfur Polymers as Flexible Interfacial Additives for Low Stack-Pressure Solid-State Lithium-Ion Batteries

Solid-state batteries (SSBs) fabricated using sulfide solid electrolytes (SSEs) typically require cell stack-pressures in the range of tens to hundreds of megapascals to maintain effective interfacial contact and lithium-ion mobility across the full cell stack. These relatively high cell stack-pressures necessarily require additional cell components that reduce the delivered volumetric and gravimetric capacities of SSBs. This work has developed a novel sulfur polymer (polyS) that improves lithium-ion conductivity in SSBs at low cell stack-pressures, thereby directly targeting this technological limitation. Specifically, this work shows that polyS can be combined with the argyrodite Li6PS5Cl (LPSC) to form a stable composite SSE. By combining LPSC particles with a flexible additive that enhances interfacial contact at low pressures, this new polyS LPSC composite SSE material greatly improves ionic conductivity at cell stack-pressures below 2.0 MPa in comparison to conventional LPSC composites. Furthermore, this polyS LPSC composite can be used to fabricate a full SSB that cycles reversibly at only 1.6 MPa. Finally, this composite SSE exhibits self-healing behavior when combined with a lithium metal electrode, wherein lithium dendrites are oxidized to form passivating Li2S species that recover the cell from shorting.
