Floating Wind Turbine Control Optimization

Also available from

Abstract

We present a framework for optimizing the control parameters of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs). The framework combines aeroelastic simulations with a systems engineering model and control software. In an example of the optimization framework, we minimize tower damage equivalent loading with generator speed constraints. We also study the effect of thrust-limiting control and quantify the trade off between fatigue loading and energy capture using a set of optimal controller designs. Finally, we optimize the controller of four different FOWT models and compare their dynamic responses. Additional details and other use cases for the framework are presented, which can optimize different control problems and evaluate FOWT designs.

1:70-Scale Model Testing of the Reference OpenSource Controller (ROSCO) on the IEA-Wind 15MW Reference Wind Turbine Including Floating Feedback: Preprint

This paper presents results from the Floating Offshore-wind Controls Advanced Laboratory (FOCAL) Experimental campaign performed at the University of Maine's (UMaine's) Harold Alfond Wind/Wave Ocean Engineering Laboratory (W2). The project involves four Froude-scaled test campaigns considering the International Energy Agency (IEA) Wind 15MW Reference Wind Turbine deployed on the VolturnUS-S semi-submersible platform with tuned-mass damper (TMD) elements in the hull. The turbine employs real-time rotor torque and blade pitch control through the Reference OpenSource Controller (ROSCO), including the additional control strategies of ROSCO's thrust peak shaving and a floating feedback control loop. Results with the floating feedback control are considered in this paper and show a significant reduction in platform pitch motion and loads around the platform pitch natural frequency with minimal negative impact of rotor power quality.

Control of Grid-Connected Multiport MV Power Electronics Energy Hub: Preprint

In this paper a new concept of multiport modular medium-voltage power electronics hub (M3PE-HUB) is introduced for future power grid. The goal for this project is to design, develop, and demonstrate foundational technologies and capabilities for multiport power electronics energy hubs that can serve as intelligent devices to coordinate and control several different sources and loads. In this paper, the architecture of the controller, the central controls, and its verification is presented.

Cyber-Resilient Distributed Autonomous Energy Grid

The aim of Cyber-Resilient Distributed Autonomous Grid research initiative is to advance fundamental science and engineering approaches for cyber-resilient design, control, and operation of a distributed, highly interconnected, and autonomous energy grid of the future. From increasing penetration of DERs, smart homes and building with highly controllable loads at the distribution layer, to the interconnection of bulk renewables at the transmission layer the fundamental nature of the energy grid is changing, and these changes are enabled by rapid increase in dependence on the communication infrastructure and independent third parties for control and operation of the grid. NREL's Integrated Energy Pathways critical objective correctly identifies that there are fundamental cyber-resilience challenges inherent in the grid's evolution, and this effort is establishing strong and novel integrated cyber-resilience framework and approaches to address these new and fundamental challenges.
