Reducing Commercial Building Process Loads and Refrigeration Unit Energy Consumption

Abstract

This resource provides guidance on larger PPLs, many of which are hardwired. Examples include elevators, enterprise servers, freezers, and water fountains with chillers, which are often collectively referred to as "process loads." This resource also outlines how to assess process loads in a building, describes the procedure for identifying which loads to target for reduction, and provides an overview of reduction strategies. In this resource, process loads are broken into five categories - food handling, refrigeration, internal mobility, data center and information technology, and water handling.

From RNNs to Foundation Models: An Empirical Study on Commercial Building Energy Consumption

Accurate short-term energy consumption forecasting for commercial buildings is crucial for smart grid operations. While smart meters and deep learning models enable forecasting using past data from multiple buildings, data heterogeneity from diverse buildings can reduce model performance. The impact of increasing dataset heterogeneity in time series forecasting, while keeping size and model constant, is understudied. We tackle this issue using the ComStock dataset, which provides synthetic energy consumption data for U.S. commercial buildings. Two curated subsets, identical in size and region but differing in building type diversity, are used to assess the performance of various time series forecasting models, including finetuned open-source foundation models (FMs). The results show that dataset heterogeneity and model architecture have a greater impact on post-training forecasting performance than the parameter count. Moreover, despite the higher computational cost, finetuned FMs demonstrate competitive performance compared to base models trained from scratch.

Efficient Air Dehumidification Can Save 15%-50% of Cooling Energy in Commercial Buildings

Current approach to dehumidification in commercial buildings with chilled/hot water AHU systems is to overcool return + supply air to dewpoint, and then reheat before supply to zone. This is energy inefficient, with reheat often being gas-fired. To reduce energy consumption, building operators will often operate at little-to-no outside air, sacrificing IAQ. Decarbonizing commercial buildings requires solutions to reduce and fully electrify dehumidification energy consumption. The Altaire ADAPT and Conservant HEDS systems aim to solve this problem by decoupling humidity control from cooling reduces energy consumption while enabling improved IAQ management.

Evaluation of Equivalent Battery Model Representations for Thermostatically Controlled Loads in Commercial Buildings

Models for thermostatically controlled loads in commercial buildings often include many parameters and variables compared to residential buildings. As such, it is beneficial to use reduced-order models to represent these resources. A classic example of such a model is the Virtual Battery or Equivalent Battery Model (EBM). In this paper, the typical EBM is extended to higher-order commercial Heating, Ventilation, and Air-conditioning (HVAC) models and adapted for electric water heaters. Finally, we compare the performance of EBMs with detailed thermal models using three classic optimization problems - energy maximization, energy minimization, and power reference tracking. Our results show that the EBM-constrained and detailed thermal model-constrained problems produce similar outcomes in terms of temperature, power, and total energy consumption.
