Power Electronics Cooling Technology Research at NREL

Abstract

This presentation describes power electronics thermal management technologies used for on-road EVs. Examples are provided and heat exchangers are described. Advanced cooling technologies developed are NREL to enable increased power density and enable high WBG temperature operation are then presented. The performance (e.g., thermal resistance, pumping power) of the advanced power electronics cooling technologies are compared to the performance of current, on-road technology.

Heat Pipe Enhanced Thermal Management System for GaN Switches in an Integrated Modular Motor Drive for Aircraft Propulsion

This paper presents the process of sizing a heat pipe enhanced thermal management system (TMS) for GaN switches in an integrated modular motor drive (IMMD) powering a 250 kW aircraft propulsion electric motor. A test setup mimicking the TMS and GaN switches assembly is constructed. The condenser chamber of the TMS is modeled in ANSYS Fluent while the GaN switches assembly is modeled in ANSYS Thermal allowing us to verify heat spreader temperature under test conditions and estimate GaN temperatures under test and actual application operating conditions.

Micelle-Like Bulk Structure of Localized High-Concentration Electrolytes

In the recent article by Efaw et al. published in Nature Materials, a unique micelle-like bulk structure of localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs) is revealed to provide beneficial characteristics with respect to solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) stability on lithium metal anodes. This work adds to the pertinent discussions on design rules of LHCE, providing tangible guidelines for its improvement.
