Concentrations and Health Implications of As, Hg, and Cd and Micronutrients in Rice and Emissions of CH 4 From Variably Flooded Paddies

Abstract The flooded soil conditions under which rice is typically grown are beneficial for boosting yield and decreasing herbicide inputs but may pose a food safety and environmental health risk. Flooded soils lead to reducing conditions and anaerobic metabolisms of soil microorganisms, which mobilizes arsenic from soil into soil solution, where it can be absorbed by rice roots and transported to grain. These conditions also promote the production and emission of methane (CH 4 )—a potent greenhouse gas. To evaluate how water management affects metal(loid) grain concentrations and CH 4 emissions, we conducted a 2‐year field study in which rice paddy water was managed under a range of soil redox conditions that spanned from flooded to non‐flooded. We observed that growing rice under less flooded conditions decreased CH 4 emissions and concentrations of grain total As, grain inorganic As, grain total Hg, and grain inorganic Hg relative to flooded conditions, with more reductions observed as conditions were drier; grain organic As and Hg (MeHg) species also decreased with drier conditions particularly in Year 1. However, the driest conditions tested led to a 50%–97% increase in grain Cd concentrations that exceeded the CODEX limit and grain yield reductions as high as 25% and 40% in Year 1 and 2, respectively. While concentrations of toxic metal(loid)s could be manipulated by water management, micronutrient concentrations were similar or decreased with drier conditions, potentially increasing grain Cd bioaccessibility to humans. Because practices for rice water management are gaining momentum, more research should monitor grain Cd levels along with micronutrients.

Hidden Allies: Decoding the Core Endohyphal Bacteriome of Aspergillus fumigatus

ABSTRACT Bacterial–fungal interactions that influence the behaviour of one or both organisms are common in nature. Well‐studied systems include endosymbiotic relationships that range from transient to long‐term associations. Diverse endohyphal bacteria associate with fungal hosts, emphasising the need to better comprehend the fungal bacteriome. We evaluated the hypothesis thatAspergillus fumigatusharbours an endohyphal community of bacteria that influence the host phenotype. We analysed whether 38A. fumigatusstrains show stable association with diverse endohyphal bacteria; all derived from single‐conidium cultures that were subjected to antibiotic and heat treatments. The fungal bacteriome, inferred through analysis of bacterial diversity within the fungal strains (short‐ and long‐ read sequencing methods), revealed the presence of core endohyphal bacterial genera. Microscopic analysis further confirmed the presence of endohyphal bacteria. The fungal strains exhibited high genetic diversity and phenotypic heterogeneity in drug susceptibility and in vivo virulence. No correlations were observed between genomic or functional traits and bacteriome diversity, but the abundance of some bacterial genera correlated with fungal virulence or posaconazole susceptibility. The observed endobacteriome may play functional roles, for example, nitrogen fixation. Our study emphasises the existence of complex interactions between fungi and endohyphal bacteria, possibly impacting the phenotype of the fungal host, including virulence.

Forest Age Rivals Climate to Explain Reproductive Allocation Patterns in Forest Ecosystems Globally

ABSTRACT Forest allocation of net primary productivity (NPP) to reproduction (carbon required for flowers, fruits, and seeds) is poorly quantified globally, despite its critical role in forest regeneration and a well‐supported trade‐off with allocation to growth. Here, we present the first global synthesis of a biometric proxy for forest reproductive allocation (RA) across environmental and stand age gradients from a compiled dataset of 824 observations across 393 sites. We find that ecosystem‐scale RA increases ~60% from boreal to tropical forests. Climate shows important non‐linear relationships with RA, but is not the sole predictor. Forest age effects are comparable to climate in magnitude (MAT: ß = 0.24,p = 0.021; old growth forest: ß = 0.22,p < 0.001), while metrics of soil fertility show small but significant relationships with RA (soil pH: ß = 0.07,p = 0.001; soil N: ß = −0.07,p = 0.001). These results provide strong evidence that ecosystem‐scale RA is mediated by climate, forest age, and soil conditions, and is not a globally fixed fraction of positive NPP as assumed by most vegetation and ecosystem models. Our dataset and findings can be used by modellers to improve predictions of forest regeneration and carbon cycling.
