Spin-orbital correlations from complex orbital order in MgV 2⁒ O 4

Abstract

MgV 2 ⁒O 4 is a spinel based on magnetic V 3+ ions, which host both spin (𝑆 = 1) and orbital (𝑙 eff = 1) moments. Owing to the underlying pyrochlore coordination of the magnetic sites, the spins in MgV 2 ⁒O 4 only antiferromagnetically order once the frustrating interactions imposed by the 𝐹⁑𝑑⁒$\overline{3}$β’π‘š lattice are broken through an orbitally-driven structural distortion at T 𝑆 ≃ ⁒60 K. Consequently, a NΓ©el transition occurs at T 𝑁 ≃ ⁒40 K. Low-temperature spatial ordering of the electronic orbitals is fundamental to both the structural and magnetic properties; however, considerable discussion on whether it can be described by complex or real orbital ordering is ambiguous. We apply neutron spectroscopy to resolve the nature of the orbital ground state and characterize hysteretic spin-orbital correlations using x-ray and neutron diffraction. Neutron spectroscopy finds multiple excitation bands and we parametrize these in terms of a multilevel (or excitonic) theory based on the orbitally degenerate ground state. Meaningful for the orbital ground state, we report an β€œoptical-like” mode at high energies that we attribute to a crystal-field-like excitation from the spin-orbital 𝑗 eff = 2 ground-state manifold to an excited 𝑗 eff =1 energy level. We parametrize the magnetic excitations in terms of a Hamiltonian with spin-orbit coupling and local crystalline electric field distortions resulting from deviations from perfect octahedra surrounding the V 3+ ions. We suggest that this provides compelling evidence for complex orbital order in MgV 2⁒ O 4 . We then apply the consequences of this model to understand hysteretic effects in the magnetic diffuse scattering where we propose that MgV 2⁒ O 4 displays a high-temperature orbital memory of the low-temperature spin order.

Magnetism of single crystalline breathing pyrochlore spinel AgInCr 4 ⁒S 8

Single crystals of Ag⁒In⁒Cr 4⁒ S 8 are grown by chemical vapor transport and crystallographic ordering of Ag/In that results in a breathing pyrochlore motif of Cr 3+ is verified by x-ray and neutron diffraction. Long-range antiferromagnetic order is observed below a NΓ©el temperature of 𝑇 N β‰ˆ 9.6 K. The magnetic properties are characterized using ac and dc magnetization, specific heat capacity, and single crystal neutron diffraction measurements. The specific heat data are characterized by a small lambda anomaly near 9.5 K and the estimated magnetic entropy reaches β‰ˆ $\frac{1}{3}$ of the expected value by 3⁒𝑇 N , suggesting significant short-range order in the paramagnetic phase. Single crystal neutron diffraction evidences an incommensurate spin structure with propagation vector π’Œ = (0,0,𝛿) and 𝛿 = 0.343 at 5 K. The minimal model that accounts for the data consists of ferromagnetic layers of Cr atoms, with magnetic moments lying in the plane of the layers and modulating in the perpendicular direction to form a helical structure propagating along π’Œ. Furthermore, this study represents a rare investigation of single crystals within the family of breathing pyrochlore materials.

Collapse of the effective response time near the spin glass transition temperature

Kenning et al. discovered the collapse of the effective response time, 𝑑$^{eff}_{𝐻}$⁑(𝑑 w ;𝑇), independent of aging time, 𝑑 w , as one approached the spin glass transition temperature 𝑇 g from below. Nordblad and Lundgren observed the same effect by reducing the temperature from 𝑇 g ⁑(𝐻). We analyze the behavior of ln⁑ 𝑑$^{eff}_{𝐻}$⁑(𝑑 w ;𝑇) in the temperature range near and below 𝑇 g using a scaling law that takes into account both the magnetic field 𝐻 and the time-dependent spin-glass coherence length πœ‰β‘(𝑑,𝑑 w ;𝑇). As a result, an overdetermined predictive fit to the experimental data accounts for a quasioscillatory structure of ln ⁑𝑑$^{eff}_{𝐻}$⁑ (𝑑 w ;𝑇) as a function of magnetic field 𝐻 2 for reduced temperatures as large as 𝑇/𝑇 g = 0.98.

Hidden frustration in the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet NdCd 3 ⁒P 3

We report a study of the magnetic ground state and crystal electric field (CEF) scheme in the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet NdCd 3 ⁒P 3 . Combined neutron scattering, magnetization, and heat capacity measurements demonstrate that the Nd 3+ moments occupying the triangular lattice in this material harbor hidden signs of frustration not detected in typical Curie-Weiss-based parametrization of the frustration index (𝑓 = Θ πΆβ’π‘Š /𝑇 𝑁 ). This is evidenced by a zero-field splitting of the Kramers' ground state and first excited state doublets at temperatures far in excess of 𝑇 𝑁 as well as signatures of low-energy fluctuations for 𝑇 ≫ 𝑇 𝑁 . As a result, a suppression of the zero-field ordered moment relative to its field saturation value is observed, and the impacts of this magnetic frustration as well as the coexisting bond frustration in the CdP honeycomb network on the physical properties of NdCd 3 ⁒P3 are discussed.
