Ammonia-Based Energy Storage Technology
Abstract
The University of North Dakota Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC), in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), Basin Electric Power Cooperative, Minnkota Power Cooperative, Otter Tail Power Company, and the North Dakota Industrial Commission (energy technology research and development sponsor), undertook a project to model, validate, and advance (from Technology Readiness Level [TRL] 2 to TRL 3) the ammonia-based energy storage technology (NH 3 -BEST) concept. The concept is designed to enable electricity-generating unit (EGU) accommodation of power demand fluctuations while steadily operating within an optimal-performance baseline power output range, ensuring maximum EGU operational efficiency and minimum degradation of materials, equipment, and performance because of load-cycling-driven stresses.
