Soil Sorting Technology Process System - 18620

Abstract

FUSRAP is currently using a ScanSortSM system at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant (IAAAP) FUSRAP site that has demonstrated the ability to consistently detect and isolate distinct, singular DU fragments. Prior to using the ScanSortSM system, a pilot study was performed to test the variability in detection sensitivity with DU fragments at different soil depths, belt lateral locations, and belt speed; and evaluate, calibrate, and optimize system parameters for maximizing system production efficiency. The physical treatment was initially expected to allow for a 20 percent reduction in the volume of soil requiring off-site disposal. So far, the system has achieved an 82-92 percent volume reduction during the first four years of use. This volume reduction is resulting in cost savings that more than offset the initial cost of the physical treatment system. The findings of this sorting process may be useful at other FUSRAP sites. West Valley Demonstration Project (WVDP) Annual Site Environmental Report (ASER) for Calendar Year 2025

The report, prepared for the U.S. Department of Energy West Valley Demonstration Project office (DOE-WVDP), summarizes the environmental protection program at the WVDP for calendar year (CY) 2025. Monitoring and surveillance of the facilities used by the DOE are conducted to verify protection of public health and safety and the environment. The report is a key component of the DOE’s effort to keep the public informed of environmental conditions at the WVDP. The quality assurance protocols applied to the environmental monitoring program ensure the validity and accuracy of the monitoring data. In addition to demonstrating compliance with environmental laws, regulations, and directives, the evaluation of data collected in 2025 continued to indicate that WVDP activities posed no threat to public health or safety, or to the environment.
