Heat Battery for Electrical Grid Energy
Abstract
In this paper, the fundamental principles from the Georgetown Systems Engineering Fundamentals course will be leveraged to provide a viable solution to the problem of providing cost effective energy storage for renewable electricity generation. As described in the need statement, this is necessary due to the non-dispatchable nature of renewable energy sources. Upon describing the need, several key stakeholders were identified, who may or may not directly interact with the system. They provided several characteristics and capabilities that the system should contain, as well as specific key acceptance criteria which serve as a pass/fail metric for the concept selection process. Out of three different concepts, a Pugh matrix was used to determine that a heat battery system would be the right fit for the scope of work needing to be done.
