Objective of the workshop is to provide an overview of machine-learning based SMART tools with special emphasis on two tools: SMARTSeis (for site characterization) and ModelExplorer (for Scenario analysis).

Leveraging Electrons for Electrochemical CO 2 Capture Using a Hemi‐Labile Iron Complex

Climate change, driven by anthropogenic carbon emissions, demands urgent action to prevent a 2050 tipping point. With CO 2 levels at 427 ppm (50% above pre-industrial levels), deploying energy-efficient carbon capture technologies is crucial. Electrochemical carbon capture processes that have been touted to have the potential to meet these needs rely on the applied cell voltage, and electron utilization (CO 2 molecules separated per electron), which has generally been asserted to have a theoretical limit of one. Here, we introduce an electron-leveraging strategy to enhance electron utilization beyond this limit to 1.43 by employing Fe-EDDHA, a redox-active coordination complex having a ligand with multiple hemi-labile coordination sites. The reversibility and robustness of the system were enabled by the efficient prevention of CO 2 reduction upon the introduction of nicotinamide as a guardian of the iron(2+) center. The proof-of-concept cyclic system exhibits a minimum operational energy of 22.6 kJ e mol −1 and an average of 63.7 kJ e mol −1 over 29 cycles, using a simulated flue gas (15% CO 2 ). Our electron-leveraging strategy holds promise for advancing energy-efficient electrochemical carbon capture technologies, and offers an alternative to prevalent redox potential shifting methods proposed to mitigate undesired electron transfer reactions in redox-active materials across diverse operational conditions.

Carbon Storage Technical Viability Approach (CS TVA) Matrix

The Carbon Storage Technical Viability Approach (CS TVA) Matrix is a knowledge framework developed to outline the information needed for geologic carbon storage. The CS TVA Matrix contains 5 categories, 14 sub-categories, and 47 components. This framework can be leveraged to assess the availability of data and information needed for a carbon storage project. The information categories of the matrix are tied to a list of required data using weighted mapping, published herein.

Plastic from CO 2 , Water, and Electricity: Tandem Electrochemical CO 2 Reduction and Thermochemical Ethylene-CO Copolymerization

Converting CO 2 into industrially useful products is an appealing strategy for utilization of an abundant chemical resource. Electrochemical CO 2 reduction (eCO 2 R) offers a pathway to convert CO 2 into CO and ethylene, using renewable electricity. Here, these products can be efficiently copolymerized by organometallic catalysts to generate polyketones. However, the conditions for these reactions are very different, presenting the challenge of coupling microenvironments typically encountered for the transformation of CO 2 into highly complex but desirable multicarbon products. Herein, we present a system to produce polyketone plastics entirely derived from CO 2 and water, where both the CO and C 2 H 4 intermediates are produced by eCO 2 R. In this system, a combination of Cu and Ag gas diffusion electrodes is used to generate a gas mixture with nearly equal concentrations of CO and C 2 H 4 , and a recirculatory CO 2 reduction loop is used to reach concentrations of above 11% each, leading to a current-to-polymer efficiency of up to 51% and CO 2 utilization of 14%.
