Magnetic skyrmionic structures with variable topological charges in engineered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction systems

Abstract

Magnetic skyrmionic structures, including magnetic skyrmions and antiskyrmions, are characterized by swirling spin textures with non-trivial topologies. They are featured with specific topological charges, Q , which are of crucial importance in determining their topological properties. Owing to the invariance of the chiral nature, it is generally believed that Q is conserved in a given magnetic skyrmionic structure and is hard to alter. Here, we experimentally realize the control of Q of magnetic skyrmionic structures at room temperature in a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) platform with spatially alternating signs. Depending on how many times it crosses the interfaces between DMI regions with opposite signs, the magnetic skyrmionic structures possess different Q . Modifying the DMI energy landscape through chemisorbed oxygen, a magnetic topological transition is realized. This creation and manipulation of magnetic skyrmionic structures with controllable Q , in particular the DMI-stabilized thin-film antiskyrmions and high- Q skyrmionic structures, enables a new degree of freedom to control their dynamics via a novel DMI confinement effect. Our findings open up an unexplored avenue on various topological magnetic skyrmionic structures and their potential applications.

Ramification of complex magnetism in Nd 2 Ir 2 O 7 observed by Raman scattering spectroscopy

Using Raman scattering spectroscopy, we uncover a complex magnetic behavior of Nd2Ir2O7, which stands out among magnetic pyrochlores by the lowest temperature of the all-in-all-out (AIAO) Ir moments ordering (${T}_{{\rm{Ir}}}^{{\rm{N}}} = 33$ K) and the highest temperature at which AIAO order of rare-earth Nd ions is detected (${T}_{{\rm{Nd}}}^{{\rm{* }}}$ = 15 K). Detected magnetic Raman scattering and calculations of expected response allow us to demonstrate that the ordering of Ir magnetic moments is accompanied by an appearance of one-magnon Raman modes at 26.3 and 29.6 meV compatible with the AIAO order and allowing to estimate the energies of Ir-Ir interactions. An additional two-magnon excitation of the AIAO Nd order at around 33 meV appears in the spectra below the ordering temperature of Nd moments ${T}_{{\rm{Nd}}}^{{\rm{* }}}$ = 15 K. In the temperature range between 15 K and 33 K we observe a broad mode, which demonstrates strong temperature dependence and shifts on cooling below 20 K from 14 meV to higher frequencies, and disappears at 5 K, when two-magnon excitation of Nd moments becomes prominent. We suggest an interpretation of this excitation in terms of continuum arising from collective fluctuations of Nd moments above the transition. This complex behavior emerges from the interplay of strong spin-orbit coupling, electronic correlations, and geometric frustration on two magnetic pyrochlore sublattices of Nd and Ir ions.

Tunable magnons of an antiferromagnetic Mott insulator via interfacial metal-insulator transitions

Antiferromagnetic insulators present a promising alternative to ferromagnets due to their ultrafast spin dynamics essential for low-energy terahertz spintronic device applications. Magnons, i.e., quantized spin waves capable of transmitting information through excitations, serve as a key functional element in this paradigm. However, identifying external mechanisms to effectively tune magnon properties has remained a major challenge. Here we demonstrate that interfacial metal-insulator transitions offer an effective method for controlling the magnons of Sr 2 IrO 4 , a strongly spin-orbit coupled antiferromagnetic Mott insulator. Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments reveal a significant softening of zone-boundary magnon energies in Sr 2 IrO 4 films epitaxially interfaced with metallic 4 d transition-metal oxides. Therefore, the magnon dispersion of Sr 2 IrO 4 can be tuned by metal-insulator transitions of the 4 d transition-metal oxides. We tentatively attribute this non-trivial behavior to a long-range phenomenon mediated by magnon-acoustic phonon interactions. Our experimental findings introduce a strategy for controlling magnons and underscore the need for further theoretical studies to better understand the underlying microscopic interactions between magnons and phonons.
