Optimization of VISAR Mirrors for NIF Targets

Abstract

The velocity interferometer system for any reflector (VISAR) is a key diagnostic at the National Ignition Facility that is used for measuring propagation and velocities of shocks through a sample for several high energy density campaigns. To support simultaneous measurements with VISAR and other diagnostics, optical mirrors are used to divert the VISAR signal off axis from the primary diagnostic line of sight, which can then be used for other measurements. Here, in this study, we describe our work on investigating issues with these mirrors to support complex new target geometries and signal variance due to system aging and more demanding polling rates. This paper also describes the key mitigation efforts performed to improve both the flatness and reflectivity of these commonly used mirrors.

The inertial confinement fusion experimental platform and diagnostics for studies of nuclear reactions relevant to nuclear astrophysics

High energy density plasmas generated in laser-driven inertial confinement fusion implosions provide unparalleled laboratory conditions for studying stellar-relevant nuclear reactions: plasma environment; hot and dense; uniquely high achievable neutron flux. These experiments have the potential to address long-standing questions about plasma effects on nuclear reactions hitherto experimentally inaccessible, including nuclear rates with thermally distributed reactants, plasma screening, and reactions involving nuclei in excited states. The National Ignition Facility (NIF) and OMEGA lasers are two primary facilities for executing experiments of this type. Existing and future nuclear diagnostics, along with supporting diagnostics to characterize the platform, enable exploitation of these plasmas for such nuclear astrophysics-relevant experiments. Here, this review describes the nuclear diagnostic capabilities currently available for these types of experiments at the NIF and OMEGA, including neutron time-of-flight spectrometers, charged-particle detectors, gamma detectors and radiochemistry diagnostics, and briefly summarizes other available diagnostic capabilities used for platform characterization. Enabling tools not yet available are also identified, including a rapid radioactive sample retrieval system, a low-energy neutron spectrometer and a high-efficiency gamma spectrometer.

Repair strategy for fused silica wedged focus lens with high-density filamentary damage

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) is intentionally operated with the final fused silica glass (SiO2) optics exposed to fluences and intensities with the potential to induce damage that will grow with additional laser exposure. Therefore, the NIF operates a recycle loop to refurbish final optics by mitigating any initiated surface damage to arrest its growth. However, the morphology of filamentary damage, caused by local self-focusing in the bulk of a silica optic, adds complexity to optics mitigation and provides a limitation to optic reusability. Here, we evaluate techniques for mitigating isolated and clustered filamentary damage. Optical microscopy before and after installation on NIF was used to determine the efficacy of filamentary mitigation after a series of high fluence and intensity laser exposures. The challenges and success rate of the methods are compared for various filamentary damage mitigation strategies.
