Enhancement of Superconductivity in WP via Oxide-Assisted Chemical Vapor Transport

Tungsten monophosphide (WP) has been reported to superconduct below 0.8 K, and theoretical work has predicted an unconventional Cooper pairing mechanism. Here we present data for WP single crystals grown by means of chemical vapor transport (CVT) of WO3, P, and I2. In comparison to synthesis using WP powder as a starting material, this technique results in samples with substantially decreased low-temperature scattering and favors a more three-dimensional morphology. We also find that the resistive superconducting transitions in these samples begin above 1 K. Variation in Tc is often found in strongly correlated superconductors, and its presence in WP could be the result of influence from a competing order and/or a non-s-wave gap.

Thermo-Mechanical Phase-Field Modeling of Fracture in High-Burnup UO2 Fuels Under Transient Conditions

This study presents a novel multiphysics phase-field fracture model to analyze high-burnup uranium dioxide (UO2) fuel behavior under transient reactor conditions. Fracture is treated as a stochastic phase transition, which inherently accounts for the random microstructural effects that lead to variations in the value of fracture strength. Moreover, the model takes into consideration the effects of temperature and burnup on thermal conductivity. Therefore, the model is able to predict crack initiation, propagation, and complex morphologies in response to thermal gradients and stress distributions. Several simulations were conducted to investigate the effects of operational and transient conditions on fracture behavior and the resulting cracking patterns. High-burnup fuels exhibit reduced thermal conductivity, elevating temperature gradients and resulting in extensive radial and circumferential cracks. Transient heating rates and temperatures significantly affect fracture patterns, with higher heating rates generating steeper gradients and more irregular crack trajectories. This approach provides critical insights into fuel integrity during accident scenarios and supports the safety evaluation of extended burnup limits.

Synthesis and Characterization of Soy Hull Biochar-Based Flexible Polyurethane Foam Composites

Flexible polyurethane foams are a diverse class of materials encompassing furniture, packaging, automotive, and many other industrial and domestic applications. Polyurethane foams are synthesized by the addition of polyols and isocyanates; however, the petroleum origin and toxic nature of isocyanates have driven many to look for more sustainable routes to production. Renewable fillers have emerged as a biobased resource to decrease the carbon footprint of this widely used polymeric material. In this study, soy hulls, as mass-produced, industrial by-products of soybean production, were used to create a biochar beneficial in the synthesis of flexible polyurethane foam composites. The addition of soy hull biochar was found to maintain the compression properties of foams at a decreasing isocyanate index, reducing the amount of isocyanates needed for production. In addition, the addition of biochar decreased the flammability of foams, important for many applications where consumer safety is important. The results point to the ability to create safer, more sustainable, and even more cost-effective polyurethane foams through the reduction in isocyanate use while maintaining the properties of this important class of polymers.
