Extended Interacting Boson Model with Configuration Mixing Description For 98 Mo

Abstract

An extended version of the interacting boson model (IBM), encompassing two-particle–two-hole (2p-2h) excitations originating from below a valence shell and one-particle–one-hole (1p-1h) excitations extending to the upper next-nearest major shell, is developed to investigate cross-shell excitation effects in the transitional nucleus 98 Mo. This extended IBM framework is utilized to reproduce experimentally observed properties such as low-lying positive-parity level energies, 𝐵⁡(𝐸⁢2) values, and the electric quadrupole moment of the 2$^{+}_{1}$ state, 𝜌 2 ⁡(𝐸⁢0, 0$^{+}_{2}$ → 0$^{+}_{g}$), as well as the strength functions of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) and the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance (ISGQR) in 98 Mo. It is shown that the extended consistent-𝑄 IBM, incorporating configuration mixing of both 2p-2h excitations from below the valence shell and 1p-1h excitations to the upper next-nearest major shell, describes the low-lying structural properties and the ISGMR and ISGQR strength distributions of 98 Mo quite well, with the ISGMR and the ISGQR strength distributions comparable to the results of the self-consistent quasiparticle random-phase approximation with Skyrme interactions.

𝑙-forbidden 𝑀⁢1 strengths near 100 Sn from knockout reactions in Cd and Sn

Neutron knockout reactions on beams of 104,102 Cd and 104 Sn are presented. States in the residual 103,101 Cd and 103 Sn nuclei are populated, including low-lying 7/2 + states of 𝜈⁢𝑔 7/2 character. These states have half-lives ≈ 400 ps due to their low energy and hindered 𝐵⁡(𝑀⁢1;7/2 + →5/2 + ) strengths. The excited-state half-lives were measured using their Doppler-shifted line shapes, and the resulting 𝐵⁡(𝑀⁢1) strengths are compared to valence space in medium similarity renormalization group (VS-IMSRG) calculations. Lastly, the VS-IMSRG calculations underpredict the 𝑙-forbidden 𝑀⁢1 strengths in the 100 Sn region, as well as in other regions of the nuclear chart near 40 Ca and 208 Pb.

Evolution of chirality from transverse wobbling in 135 Pr

Chirality is a distinct signature that characterizes triaxial shapes in nuclei. We report the first observation of chirality in the nucleus 135 Pr using a high-statistics Gammasphere experiment with the 123 Sb( 16 O, 4n) 135 Pr reaction. Two chiral-partner bands with the configuration π(1h11/2 )1 ⊗ ν(1h 11/2 ) −2 have been identified in this nucleus. Angular distribution analyses of the ΔI = 1 transitions connecting the two bands reveal a dominant dipole character, and quasiparticle triaxial rotor model calculations show good agreement with the data. Since the simultaneous observation of chirality and transverse wobbling in 135 Pr relies critically on these angular distribution results, we also address and refute the experimental and theoretical criticisms raised in a recent work by Lv et al., presenting additional evidence that further strengthens our interpretation. Furthermore, this marks the first observation of both hallmarks of triaxiality—chirality and wobbling—in the same nucleus.

Extraction of neutron-capture cross sections on 92 Zr using the charge-exchange Oslo method

The 93 Nb (𝑡, 3 He ) reaction at 115 MeV/nucleon was studied to demonstrate that nuclear level densities and 𝛾-ray strength functions can be extracted from charge-exchange reactions at intermediate energies using the Oslo technique. The matrix of excitation energy in 93 Zr, reconstructed from the (𝑡, 3 He ) reaction, versus the energy of 𝛾 rays emitted by the excited 93 Zr nuclei, was obtained in an experiment with the S800 Spectrograph operated in coincidence with the GRETINA 𝛾 -ray detector. The extracted level density and 𝛾 -ray strength function obtained by applying the Oslo method to this matrix were used to estimate the 92 Zr⁢(𝑛,𝛾) ⁢93 Zr cross section by combining the new results with other experimental data and theoretical calculations for 𝐸⁢1 and 𝑀⁢1 strength functions at higher energies. Good agreement with direct measurements of the 92 Zr⁢(𝑛,𝛾)⁢ 93 Zr cross section was found. The contribution from the upbend in the extracted 𝛾-ray strength function was important to achieve the consistency, as the neutron-capture cross section without this contribution is significantly below the direct measurements otherwise. Since charge-exchange reactions at intermediate energies have long been used for extracting Gamow-Teller strengths, the successful demonstration of the charge-exchange Oslo method enables experiments in which (𝑛,𝛾) cross sections and Gamow-Teller strengths can be measured simultaneously, which is of benefit for astrophysical studies.
