Microbial Influence on Radionuclide Transport through the Culebra
Abstract
The potential release of radionuclides into the Culebra dolomite formation is modeled extensively in the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant’s Performance Assessment (WIPP PA) calculations. Uranium is of chief concern in these modeled scenarios, as it shows the greatest release. Because of this, a series of experiments was undertaken to determine if microbial activity in the Culebra formation could transform uranium, either directly or indirectly, to a state that could be immobilized.
