An Exploration into Elemental Additions to Tungsten Electrodes
Abstract
The scope of this study is to evaluate the arc start capabilities of various tungsten electrode alloys—2% Thoriated, 2% Ceriated, 2% Lanthanated, and a proprietary Tri-Mix WS2 on Stainless Steel 304 and Molybdenum. Each electrode maintained consistent geometry: 0.040" diameter, 2.000" length, and a 0.0010" flat tip with a 40° tip angle. The testing procedure aimed to determine the minimum starting amperage required to achieve 10 consecutive successful arc starts per electrode type.
