Abstract

Complex chalcogenides in the 𝑀⁢PS 3 family of materials (𝑀 =Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni) display remarkably different phase progressions depending upon the metal center orbital filling, character of the P–P linkage, and size of the van der Waals gap. There is also a stacking pattern and spin-state difference between the “lighter” and “heavier” transition-metal-containing systems that places CoPS 3 at the nexus of these activities. Despite these unique properties, this compound is underexplored. Here, we bring together Raman scattering spectroscopy and infrared absorption spectroscopy with x-ray techniques to identify a structural component to the 119 K magnetic ordering transition. With temperature-dependent Raman scattering, we discover a set of magnon-phonon pairs that engages in avoided crossings below 𝑇 Néel . Lastly, these findings point to strong spin-phonon entanglement as well as opportunities to control these effects under external stimuli.

Magnetic Calorimeter Arrays with High Sensor Inductance and Dense Wiring

We describe prototype arrays of magnetically coupled microcalorimeters fabricated with an approach scalable to very large format arrays. The superconducting interconnections and sensor coils have sufficiently low inductance in the wiring and sufficiently high inductance in the coils in each pixel, to enable arrays containing greater than 4000 sensors and 100,000 X-ray absorbers to be used in future astrophysics missions such as Lynx. We have used projection lithography to create submicron patterns (e.g., 400-nanometer-lines and spaces) in our niobium sensor coils and wiring, integrated with gold-erbium sensor films and gold X-ray absorbers. Our prototype devices will explore the device physics of metallic magnetic calorimeters as feature sizes are reduced to nanoscale.

Observational Signatures of Magnetic Reconnection in the Extended Corona

Observational signatures of reconnection have been studied extensively in the lower corona for decades, successfully providing insight into energy release mechanisms in the region above post-flare arcade loops and below 1.5 solar radii. During large eruptive events, however, energy release continues to occur well beyond the presence of reconnection signatures at these low heights. Supra-Arcade Downflows (SADs) and Supra-Arcade Downflowing Loops (SADLs) are particularly useful measures of continual reconnection in the corona as they may indicate the presence and path of retracting post-reconnection loops. SADs and SADLs have been faintly observed up to 18 hours beyond the passage of corona mass ejections through the SOHO/LASCO field of view, but a recent event from 2014 October 14 associated with giant arches provides very clear observations of these downflows for days after the initial eruption. We report on this unique event and compare these findings with observational signatures of magnetic reconnection in the extended corona for more typical eruptions.
