Abstract

On the kagome lattice, electrons benefit from the simultaneous presence of band topology, flat electronic bands, and Van Hove singularities, forming competing or cooperating orders. Understanding the interrelation between these distinct order parameters remains a significant challenge, leaving much of the associated physics unexplored. In the kagome superconductor KV 3 Sb 5 , which exhibits a charge density wave (CDW) state below T ≃ 78 K, we uncover an unpredicted field-induced phase transition below 6 K. The observed transition is marked by a hysteretic anomaly in the resistivity, nonlinear electrical transport, and a change in the symmetry of the electronic response as probed via the angular dependence of the magnetoresistivity. These observations surprisingly suggest the emergence of an unanticipated broken symmetry state coexisting with the original CDW. To understand this experimental observation, we developed a theoretical minimal model for the normal state inside the high-temperature parent CDW phase, where an incommensurate CDW order emerges as an instability subleading to superconductivity. Here, the incommensurate CDW emerges when superconducting fluctuations become fully suppressed by large magnetic fields. Our results suggest that, in kagome superconductors, quantum states can either coexist or are nearly degenerate in energy, indicating that these are rich platforms to expose new correlated phenomena.

Observation of room-temperature charge density wave correlations via coherent phonon spectroscopy in the Sn-doped kagome superconductor CsV 3 ⁢Sb 5

In this study, we perform ultrafast time-resolved reflectivity measurements to track the evolution of charge density wave (CDW) correlations in Sn-doped Kagome superconductor CsV 3⁢ Sb 5−𝑥 ⁢Sn 𝑥 . By extracting the coherent phonon spectrum, we evidence robust signatures of CDW correlations at temperature and doping ranges far beyond the phase boundary of long-range CDW order. Remarkably, we show that short-range CDW correlations survive up to room temperature in 𝑥 = 0.32 Sn-doped CsV 3 ⁢Sb 5 , supported by synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements. We point out that the introduction of quenched disorder by Sn doping can pin the CDW and form static short-range CDW, which can explain the observed persistent CDW signatures. Our results thus corroborate the ubiquity and robustness of CDW correlations in Sn-doped CsV 3⁢ Sb 5 and provide new insights on the role of disorders on the CDW correlations in AV 3 ⁢Sb 5 family.

Nanoscale modulation of flat bands via controllable charge density wave defects in 4⁢𝐻⁡𝑏−Ta⁢S 2

Electron correlation is a main driver of exotic quantum phases and their interplay. The 4H b-TaS 2 system, possessing an intrinsic heterostructure of 1T- and 1H -TaS 2 monolayers, offers a unique opportunity to control electron correlation by distorting the atomic lattice or tuning interlayer coupling. Here, we investigated intrinsically deformed charge-density waves (CDWs) in the 1T layer of 4H b-TaS 2 to elucidate and control their effects on flat bands using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S) combined with first-principles calculations. We identified two types of CDW defects: Type 1 has structural distortion and locally suppressed flat bands, while Type 2 features an increased flat band filling factor of intact CDW structure. Density functional theory calculations indicate that a sulfur vacancy in the 1T layer distorts the CDW structure and gives rise to a Type 1, whereas a sulfur vacancy in the 1H layer reduces the interlayer charge transfer and leads to a Type 2. Furthermore, we demonstrated creating and erasing individual CDW defects via STM manipulation. Here, our findings provide a pathway to not only tune flat bands but also selectively manipulate the interaction between CDW, the atomic lattice, and interlayer coupling in strongly correlated systems with atomic precision.

Evolution of charge correlations in the hole-doped kagome superconductor CsV 3−𝑥⁢ Ti 𝑥 ⁢Sb 5

The interplay between superconductivity and charge correlations in the kagome metal CsV 3⁢ Sb 5 can be tuned by external perturbations such as doping or pressure. Here we present a study of charge correlations and superconductivity upon hole doping via Ti substitution on the V kagome sites in CsV 3−𝑥 ⁢Ti 𝑥 ⁢Sb 5 via synchrotron x-ray diffraction and scanning superconducting quantum interference device measurements. While the superconducting phase, as viewed via the vortex structure, remains conventional and unchanged across the phase diagram, the nature of charge correlations evolves as a function of hole doping from the first superconducting dome into the second superconducting dome. For Ti doping in the first superconducting dome, competing 2×2×2 and 2×2×4 supercells form within the charge density wave state and are suppressed rapidly with carrier substitution. In the second superconducting dome, no charge correlations are detected. Here, comparing these results to those observed for CsV 3 ⁢Sb 5−𝑥 ⁢Sn 𝑥 suggests important differences between hole doping via chemical substitution on the V and Sb sites, particularly in the disorder potential associated with each dopant.
