Exploring Excited State Proton Transfer Dynamics upon Ultraviolet Excitation

Abstract

Excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) has been investigated in two prototypical systems─salicylaldehyde azine (SAA) and 1,5-dihydroxyanthraquinone (DHAQ)─using transient absorption spectroscopy upon ultraviolet excitation into the less studied higher excited (S n ) manifold. Excitation with sub-30 fs pulses and broadband visible probing has allowed for direct measurement of the ESIPT rate. In conjunction with steady-state measurements and TD-DFT calculations, a complete delineation of the ultrafast photophysics has been carried out. In SAA, ESIPT remains ultrafast (∼30 fs), consistent with previous S 1 excitation studies. Coherent vibrational beats maps reveal significant wavelength dependence, however. Theoretical analysis suggests that the observed modes and their intensities in coherent vibrational spectra are modulated by the nature of the electronically excited state. In DHAQ, the first direct observation of ESIPT presents a time-constant of ∼85 fs, and a slower component of 9 ps, akin to previous reports on double-proton transfer systems. Collectively, the results suggest that while the ultrafast ESIPT rate remains largely invariant vis-à-vis the excitation energy, the product yield, as well as accompanying coherent oscillations, may be substantively altered, owing to the existence of alternative decay pathways.

Characterizing the Excited States and Electronic Absorption Spectra of Small Alkylperoxy (RO 2 •) and Hydroperoxy (•QOOH) Radicals

Organic peroxy (ROO•) and hydroperoxy (•QOOH) radicals are key reactive intermediates that are formed via the oxidation of volatile organic compounds during combustion or in the Earth’s atmosphere. Their primary fate is continued unimolecular decay or bimolecular chemistry, the relative branching for which is heavily structure- and temperature-dependent. This article outlines a combined single- and multi-reference quantum chemical study to characterize the near-UV accessible electronically excited states of the prototypical ROO• and •QOOH intermediates, tert-butyl peroxy and hydroperoxy-tert-butyl radicals—the ground-state chemistries of which have been well studied both experimentally and computationally. Additionally, we simulate the electronic absorption profiles of these ROO• and •QOOH intermediates with a variety of multi- and single-reference methods. The results show an interesting conformer dependence on the electronically excited-state character and electronic absorption maxima of •QOOH. The results show promise for electronic absorption spectroscopy to be used as a selected probe for determining •QOOH conformers. Additionally, electronic absorption may contribute to the daytime removal of long-lived •QOOH intermediates formed in the troposphere. We expect that our studies will motivate experiments on the electronic absorption spectra of experimentally achievable ROO• and •QOOH.

Tuning the Lifetimes of Photoinduced Deligation in a Metal–Organic Framework via Linker Functionalization

Recently photoinduced dynamic ligation in a metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) was reported, where a long-lived charge-transfer excited state (ca. 30 μs) featuring partial dissociation between the carboxylate linker and metal-based node was probed by time-resolved infrared (TRIR) spectroscopy. The study offers a new mechanistic perspective to evaluate the potential contribution from the excited state molecular configuration to the performance of MOF photocatalysts. In this work, by employing MIL-101(Fe) as the study platform, we have further explored the influence of intramolecular interactions on the stability of relevant excited states and demonstrated the effective tuning of their lifetimes through the incorporation of different functional groups into the system. The correlations between the varied excited state lifetimes and coordination configurations with specific functional groups (−NH 2 or −NO 2 ) was inferred from the analyses of infrared spectroscopic data and theoretical calculations, revealing the essential role of the intramolecular interactions (i.e., between the added functional groups and the carboxylate group) in the modulation of system energetics. Overall, the work presents a pathway to tune the excited state dynamics and expands the knowledge regarding the photoinduced dynamic ligation in carboxylate-based MOFs.
