Abstract

This presentation covers a generic overview of reactor system safety testing, analysis, and related research and development (R&D) focusing on new and advanced reactor systems. This presentation is prepared for graduate-level student seminar talks. No specific reactor design information is provided. Only publicly available information and related published articles and book contents are utilized.

A Benchmarking Framework for Evaluating Large Language Model Capabilities in Nuclear Reactor Safety Applications

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly capable of answering technical questions, synthesizing domain knowledge, and supporting engineering workflows. For nuclear science and engineering, these capabilities require careful, domain-specific evaluation before they can be credibly incorporated into safety-related activities, regulatory review, or technical decision support. This paper presents preliminary results from benchmarking framework for evaluating LLM capabilities in nuclear contexts. The framework is organized into three evaluation categories: nuclear fundamentals, general dual-use knowledge, and plant specific knowledge. These categories are intended to distinguish general nuclear engineering competence from broader technical reasoning and more context-dependent nuclear knowledge. Initial evaluations focus on nuclear fundamentals using questions representative of the knowledge expected of a nuclear professional engineer. Results indicate that contemporary frontier models perform at a high level and substantially exceed the performance of older model generations, with some models approaching saturation of the current benchmark. These findings suggest both the rapid improvement of LLM capabilities in specialized technical domains and the need for more discriminating evaluation methods. The paper presents the benchmark structure, preliminary model-comparison results, and ongoing work. This work supports development of verifiable, responsible, and safety-conscious methods for assessing AI systems in nuclear engineering applications.

MARVEL Lessons Learned – 2026 Edition Fabrication, Fuel Procurement, Quality Assurance, and Safety Basis

The Microreactor Applications Research Validation and Evaluation (MARVEL) project is intended to be among the first U.S. advanced reactor demonstrations in four decades. By virtue of being sponsored directly by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the reactor is expected to benefit the broader nuclear community by exercising design processes, safety reviews, and supply chains. This project is committed to publicly documenting key lessons learned along the way toward demonstration. Building on a 2025 report that focused on lessons learned from guard vessel fabrication and Primary Coolant Apparatus Test (PCAT) testing (Abou-Jaoude et al. 2025), this 2026 edition captures findings spanning structural fabrication, quality assurance (QA), reactivity control system (RCS) assembly, fuel fabrication and shipment, safety basis development, balance-of-plant design, and overall reactor design.

MARVEL Reactor Digital Engineering Developments

The MARVEL reactor project has served to introduce a new generation of engineers to the processes required to transform a reactor design from simply an idea on paper into what will be an approved, constructed, and operational nuclear power system. Much as there have been advances in materials, analysis, and evaluation methodologies over the 50 years since the last reactor was built at INL, so too has the technology for managing the engineering process itself advanced. Digital Engineering tools and methods provide improved coordination between previously siloed engineering disciplines, reduced burdens of non-value-added data transcription processes and bring forward insights and improvements that might otherwise fall later in the design stage, where changes are much more costly. While the tools and techniques to support the full digital engineering vision are not yet complete, the MARVEL design processes provide valuable demonstrations and validations of key aspects and illuminate further areas for implementation by subsequent projects.
