Considerations for Microbial Production of Oleochemicals
Abstract
Fatty acids and their derivatives have a wide variety of uses in industrial and consumer products. While these compounds are traditionally derived from petrochemicals or natural lipids, microbes offer an alternate route for production. This chapter provides an overview of the highly conserved fatty acid biosynthetic pathway. Though highly conserved, key differences among organisms in how the pathway is realized and how it interacts within metabolism are also addressed. Finally, this chapter details engineering interventions aimed at increasing production of and upgrading fatty acids.
