A Weather Analysis for Xcel Energy's 2030 Colorado Preferred Plan

The Public Service Company of Colorado (PSCo), a subsidiary of Xcel Energy (Xcel), plans to meet its target of an 80% reduction in CO 2 emissions over 2005 levels by 2030 through its Preferred Plan1,2 that includes increasing the wind and solar energy on its system, reducing coal, and adjusting the operation and dispatch of new and existing thermal generation. The objective of our analysis reported here is to identify how the PSCo generation and transmission of its Preferred Plan might operate in the face of specific weather events. We investigate weather events that currently cause stress to PSCo’s system, such as winter storms and extreme heat. In addition, we explore how the future system responds to scenarios that may be considered normal weather conditions today, but that have a large impact on wind and solar generation potential.

As-Run Thermal Analysis for the AGC-4 Experiment Irradiated in the ATR

The Advanced Graphite Capsule (AGC) irradiation experiment will provide irradiation creep rate data for the new graphite proposed for the Next Generation Nuclear Plant (NGNP) program. The fourth experiment in the series (AGC-4) was designed to irradiate various types of graphite specimens at a temperature of 900 ºC and targeted displacements per atom (DPA) of 6. This experiment has been irradiated in the east flux trap of the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) during the cycles of 157D, 158A, 162A, 162B, 164A, 164B, 166A, and 166B. Temperatures were monitored using twelve thermocouples (TC) located at various elevations in the reactor core, and variable helium-argon gas mixtures were used for gas gap temperature control of the specimens. The purpose of this Engineering Calculation and Analysis Report (ECAR) is to calculate the specimen temperature after the model is calibrated by the measured TC data with the as-run heating rates of the components, DPA of the graphite, and the gas mixture compositions during the experiment. As-run specimen mean temperature and the tolerance will be obtained.

NUTRON NESHAPs Dashboard

My project aims to enhance the Nuclear Material Tracking Application (NUTRON) software by integrating a tool for the National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) emissions calculations and presenting this data on a dashboard. Inefficiencies in the current NESHAP calculation process were addressed, which will result in more timely regulatory compliance efforts. Key improvements include revising the transfer request system, incorporating effective dose calculations, and developing a data visualization dashboard into NUTRON. The project involved creating a wireframe, preparing an Engineering Calculations and Analysis Report (ECAR), stakeholder meetings, and providing supplemental documentation. Key findings indicate that the proposed modifications will streamline the NESHAP calculation process, reduce human error, and provide REC personnel with accurate and timely data for material use determinations and dose estimations. Future work focuses on completing the NUTRON modifications and fully integrating the new features, ensuring a more efficient and reliable system for tracking and reporting nuclear material transfers.

Control System Upgrade for Battery State-of-Charge Indications

The Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) Complex at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) relies on Battery Backed Power (BBP) systems and Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) to ensure continuous power supply to critical components. This project aims to enhance the reliability and functionality of the battery monitoring and control systems by updating the State-of-Charge (SOC) system, Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), and Human-Machine Interface (HMI) for the nuclear safety-related battery banks. The current system, while functional, has areas for improvement, particularly in recharging calculations and alarm functions. The project objectives include developing flow charts, programming the new PLC and HMI, conducting bench tests, and updating design documentation. Additionally, the project ensures compliance with safety standards, develops training materials, creates comprehensive documentation, and integrates seamlessly with existing ATR infrastructure. The new SOC system is designed to be scalable for future upgrades, improve efficiency, enhance data accuracy, implement redundancy features, and achieve project goals within budget constraints while considering environmental impact. The methodology involved familiarizing with BBP and UPS systems, collecting current readings, rescaling signals, learning ladder logic, and updating the HMI. The transition from SLC 5/03 PLC using RS Logix 500 to CompactLogix 5380 using Studio 5000 was a key step. Despite challenges in transferring outdated PLC ladder logic and HMI code, starting from scratch led to a more accurate and efficient monitoring system, contributing to improved safety and operational efficiency. The project is currently awaiting approval of the Engineering Calculation and Analysis Report (ECAR) before implementation.

ECAR-6440 Rev 2 MARVEL Hazard Evaluation

This hazard evaluation supports the Microreactor Applications Research, Validation, and Evaluation (MARVEL) Project’s design effort and the development of the preliminary documented safety analysis (PDSA) (addendum to safety analysis report [SAR]-420, “Transient Reactor Test [TREAT] Facility FSAR”) (SAR-420-ADD-1). The hazard evaluation process for the MARVEL project for compliance with the requirements in 10 CFR 830, “Nuclear Safety Management,” follows a process similar to the Licensing Modernization Project (LMP) as outlined in Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI)-18-04, “Risk-Informed Performance-Based Guidance for Non-Light Water Reactor Licensing Basis Development,” and supporting documents. The LMP process is adapted to fit Department of Energy (DOE) reactor regulatory requirements as applicable and appropriate using a graded approach based on the MARVEL microreactor design. This approach provides reasonable assurance of meeting the requirements of 10 CFR 830 for protection of the public, workers, and environment.
