First Measurement of Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering on Argon

We report the first measurement of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) on argon using a liquid argon detector at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Spallation Neutron Source. Two independent analyses prefer CEvNS over the background-only null hypothesis with greater than 3σ significance. The measured cross section, averaged over the incident neutrino flux, is (2.2±0.7)×10 –39 cm 2 —consistent with the standard model prediction. In conclusion, the neutron-number dependence of this result, together with that from our previous measurement on CsI, confirms the existence of the CEvNS process and provides improved constraints on nonstandard neutrino interactions.

First Leptophobic Dark Matter Search from the Coherent–CAPTAIN-Mills Liquid Argon Detector

We report the first results of a search for leptophobic dark matter (DM) from the Coherent–CAPTAIN-Mills (CCM) liquid argon (LAr) detector. An engineering run with 120 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) and 17.9 × 10 20 protons on target (POT) was performed in fall 2019 to study the characteristics of the CCM detector. The operation of this 10-ton detector was strictly light based with a threshold of 50 keV and used coherent elastic scattering off argon nuclei to detect DM. Despite only 1.5 months of accumulated luminosity, contaminated LAr, and nonoptimized shielding, CCM’s first engineering run has already achieved sensitivity to previously unexplored parameter space of light dark matter models with a baryonic vector portal. With an expected background of 115 005 events, we observe 115 005 + 16.5 events which is compatible with background expectations. For a benchmark mediator-to-DM mass ratio of m V B =m χ = 2.1, DM masses within the range 9 MeV ≲ m χ ≲ 50 MeV are excluded at 90% C. L. in the leptophobic model after applying the Feldman-Cousins test statistic. CCM’s upgraded run with 200 PMTs, filtered LAr, improved shielding, and 10 times more POT will be able to exclude the remaining thermal relic density parameter space of this model, as well as probe new parameter space of other leptophobic DM models.

Measurements of Pion and Muon Nuclear Capture at Rest on Argon in the LArIAT Experiment

We report the measurement of the final-state products of negative pion and muon nuclear capture at rest on argon by the LArIAT experiment at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility. We measure a population of isolated MeV-scale energy depositions, or blips, in 296 LArIAT events containing tracks from stopping low-momentum pions and muons. The average numbers of visible blips are measured to be 0.74 ± 0.19 and 1.86 ± 0.17 near muon and pion track endpoints, respectively. The 3.6⁢𝜎 statistically significant difference in blip content between muons and pions provides the first demonstration of a new method of pion-muon discrimination in neutrino liquid argon time projection chamber experiments. LArIAT Monte Carlo simulations predict substantially higher average blip counts for negative muon (1.22 ± 0.08) and pion (2.34 ± 0.09) nuclear captures. We attribute this difference to geant4’s inaccurate simulation of the nuclear capture process.

Sensitivity to low-mass WIMPs with an improved liquid argon ionization response model within the DarkSide program

Dark matter detection experiments using liquid argon rely on a precise characterization of the ionization response to nuclear recoils, especially in the keV energy range relevant for light dark matter interactions. In this work, we present a comprehensive analysis that combines new measurements from the ReD setup, part of the DarkSide experimental program, with calibration data from DarkSide-50, as well as results from the ARIS and SCENE experiments. These combined datasets enable improved constraints on atomic screening effects in the modeling of the ionization response of liquid argon to nuclear recoils. The analysis is performed within the Thomas-Imel recombination framework adopted in previous DarkSide studies, and is here further constrained by the inclusion of ReD data, which allow the screening function to be determined from calibration measurements. By including the updated ionization model into the DarkSide-50 analysis framework, we obtain stronger exclusion limits on low-mass weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) interactions, setting new world-leading constraints in the 1 – 3 GeV / c 2 WIMP mass range. Finally, we recast the sensitivity projections for the upcoming DarkSide-20k detector, demonstrating a significantly enhanced discovery potential for low-mass dark matter candidates.

Measurement of charged-current muon neutrino-argon interactions without pions in the final state using the MicroBooNE detector

We report a new measurement of flux-integrated differential cross sections for charged-current (CC) muon neutrino interactions with argon nuclei that produce no final-state pions (𝜈 𝜇 ⁢CC⁢0⁢𝜋). These interactions are of particular importance as a topologically defined signal dominated by quasielasticlike interactions. This measurement was performed with the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber detector located at the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam and uses an exposure of 1.3 ×10 21 protons on target collected between 2015 and 2020. The results are presented in terms of single- and double-differential cross sections as a function of the final-state muon momentum and angle. The data are compared with widely used neutrino event generators. We find good agreement with the single-differential measurements, while only a subset of generators are also able to adequately describe the data in double-differential distributions. This work facilitates comparison with Cherenkov detector measurements, including those located at the Booster Neutrino Be

SiPM-matrix readout of two-phase argon detectors using electroluminescence in the visible and near infrared range

Proportional electroluminescence (EL) in noble gases is used in two-phase detectors for dark matter searches to record (in the gas phase) the ionization signal induced by particle scattering in the liquid phase. The “standard” EL mechanism is considered to be due to noble gas excimer emission in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV). In addition, there are two alternative mechanisms, producing light in the visible and near infrared (NIR) ranges. The first is due to bremsstrahlung of electrons scattered on neutral atoms (“neutral bremsstrahlung”, NBrS). The second, responsible for electron avalanche scintillation in the NIR at higher electric fields, is due to transitions between excited atomic states. In this work, we have for the first time demonstrated two alternative techniques of the optical readout of two-phase argon detectors, in the visible and NIR range, using a silicon photomultiplier matrix and electroluminescence due to either neutral bremsstrahlung or avalanche scintillation. The amplitude yield and position resolution were measured for these readout techniques, which allowed to assess the detection threshold for electron and nuclear recoils in two-phase argon detectors for dark matter searches. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first practical application of the NBrS effect in detection science.

Comparing Generator Predictions of Single Transverse Variables in Neutrino-Argon Scattering [Poster]

Precise modeling of neutrino-argon scattering is a crucial requirement for the DUNE and SBN neutrino oscillation programs. Single transverse variables provide a powerful handle on theoretically-challenging nuclear effects in neutrino-carbon scattering, but they remain unmeasured for argon. The MicroBooNE experiment has the opportunity to achieve the first measurement of STVs in a LArTPC. The first detailed study of generator predictions for STVs in vμ-Ar scattering, reported in this poster, reveals substantial opportunities for model discrimination: Relative contributions of CCQE vs. 2p-2h interactions; and,Treatment of nucleon pair initial state. We encourage MicroBooNE to pursue a measurement of this kind. Many more generator comparisons from our study are available.

Selecting Charged Current Muon Neutrino Interactions on Argon with the Short-Baseline Near Detector

The uncertainties associated with neutrino-nucleus cross section modelling need to be reduced in order to measure neutrino oscillation parameters, the mass hierarchy and CP violation to a high degree of precision. SBND, a 112 ton liquid argon time projection chamber, will be the near detector of the short-baseline neutrino program at Fermilab. Once data taking begins in 2022, it will provide flux constraints for sterile neutrino searches and produce world leading neutrino-argon cross sections with up to seven million neutrino events in three years. This thesis describes the simulation, calibration and reconstruction tools developed to measure charged current muon neutrino interactions.Backgrounds from cosmic ray muons, neutrino interactions outside of the detector and different neutrino interaction channels were identified and removed as part of this process. The signal events were selected with purity of 90% and an efficiency of 67%, providing a strong starting point for meas urements of exclusive channels. The expected statistical and systematic uncertainties on rate predictions and cross section measurements at the full 6.6×10$^{20}$ proton on target exposure were evaluated.

Measurement of neutral current single π 0 production on argon with the MicroBooNE detector

We report the first measurement of π 0 production in neutral current (NC) interactions on argon with average neutrino energy of ≲1 GeV. We use data from the MicroBooNE detector’s 85-tonne active volume liquid argon time projection chamber situated in Fermilab’s Booster Neutrino Beam and exposed to 5.89 × 10 20 protons on target for this measurement. Measurements of NC π 0 events are reported for two exclusive event topologies without charged pions. Those include a topology with two photons from the decay of the π 0 and one proton and a topology with two photons and zero protons. Flux-averaged cross-sections for each exclusive topology and for their semi-inclusive combination are extracted (efficiency-correcting for two-plus proton final states), and the results are compared to predictions from the GENIE, NEUT, and NUWRO neutrino event generators. We measure cross sections of 1.243 ± 0.185 (syst) ±0.076 (stat), 0.444 ± 0.098 ± 0.047, and 0.624 ± 0.131 ± 0.075 [10 -38 cm 2 /Ar] for the semi-inclusive NCπ 0 , exclusive NCπ 0 +1p, and exclusive NCπ 0 +0p processes, respectively.

Design Improvements in Liquid Argon Purification Techniques in DUNE Cold Electronics Test Cryostat (Iceberg)

A proposed design improvement for the removal of electronegative impurities from liquid argon for the purpose of neutrino detector research is described. The design will utilize a commercially available submersible pump to circulate liquid argon through an external filter containing molecular sieve and activated copper media, removing water and oxygen, respectively. The existing state-of-the-art filter design provides a throughput of 0.5 L/min, while the capacity of the submersible pump design is at least 4 L/min, though could be even higher depending on total losses within the filtration piping assembly. An additional benefit of the new design will be the ability to regenerate the filter media in situ without stopping the experimental testing. The following work will describe the design, operation, and expected performance using CFD analysis.

Measurement of ambient radon daughter decay rates and energy spectra in liquid argon using the MicroBooNE detector

We report measurements of radon daughters in liquid argon within the MicroBooNE time projection chamber (LArTPC). The presence of radon in MicroBooNE’s 85 metric tons of active liquid argon bulk is probed with newly developed charge-based low-energy reconstruction tools and analysis techniques to detect correlated 214 Bi- 214 Po radioactive decays. Special datasets taken during periods of active radon doping enable new demonstrations of the calorimetric capabilities of singlephase neutrino LArTPCs for β and α particles with electron-equivalent energies ranging from 0.1 to 3.0 MeV. By applying 214 Bi- 214 Po detection algorithms to beam-external physics data recorded over a 46-day period, no statistically significant presence of radon is detected, corresponding to a limit of < 0.38 mBq/kg at the 95% confidence level. The obtained radon radiopurity limit – the first ever reported for a noble element detector incorporating liquid-phase purification – is well below the target value of the future DUNE neutrino detector.

Measurements of Pion and Muon Nuclear Capture at Rest on Argon in the LArIAT Test Beam Experiment

LArIAT is a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) experiment in a test beam at Fermilab from 2015 to 2017 to understand and characterize interactions of particles in LAr which are commonly observed in neutrino-Ar final-states. Tracks for pions and muons in LArTPCs are difficult to differentiate since both particles exhibit very similar ionization profiles for muon and pion that stop in the TPC. We are exploring unique new particle discrimination capabilities by exploiting information from small, isolated ionization depositions, referred to as "blips", reconstructed near the endpoint of stopping tracks. These blips are formed by gammas emitted when an at-rest pion or muon captures on the argon nucleus. The relatively low beam energy provided by LArIAT makes it uniquely suited for performing this demonstration. In this poster, we present an overview of event candidate selection, blip reconstruction, and background subtraction corresponding to our signal of interest, nuclear captures of pions and muons at rest inside LArIAT's TPC.

Measurement of Differential Neutral Current Elastic $ν_μ$-Argon Scattering Cross Sections with MicroBooNE

The MicroBooNE experiment is an 85 ton active mass liquid-argon time projection chamber located in the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beamline. MicroBooNE’s ability to detect low-energy protons allows us to study single proton events with momenta as low as 300 MeV/c. We present a measurement of the flux-averaged neutral-current elastic differential cross section for neutrinos scattering on argon as functions of four-momentum transfer squared, Q 2 , proton kinetic energy, momentum and angle with respect to the beam direction. Our measured cross section as a function of Q 2 goes as low Q 2 = 0.10 GeV2 . This is our first step towards extracting the strange quark contribution to the axial form factor, which is not only the least-constrained contribution to the neutral-current elastic scattering cross section but is also crucial for understanding the strange quark contribution to the proton spin.

First Extraction of Single Differential Cross-Sections on Argon for CC1$\mu$2p0$\pi$ Event Topologies in the MicroBooNE Detector

The precise measurement of cross-sections for a variety of interactions is critical to the success of forthcoming flagship neutrino experiments. Of special interest are neutrino interactions that leave the nucleus in a 2-particle 2-hole state (2p2h). This note will present the first cross-section measurement for the production of 2p2h states on argon. Using MicroBooNE data collected from the first three years of operation, we select events corresponding to a charged-current $ν_µ$ interaction that left the argon nucleus in a 2p2h state. These interactions produce a topology with one muon and two protons in the final state (CC1$\mu$2p0$\pi$). This analysis targets a single differential cross-section measurement for CC1$\mu$2p0$\pi$ event topologies in a variety of kinematic variables. Comparisons are made to a set of theoretical models that explore different cross-section modeling configurations.

Measurement of Triple-Differential Inclusive Muon Neutrino Charged-Current Cross Sections on Argon with the MicroBooNE Detector

We report the first measurement of the differential cross section $d^2σ(E_ν)/dcos(θ_µ)dP_µ$for inclusive muon neutrino charged-current scattering on argon. This measurement utilizes data from6.5×10 20 protons on target of exposure collected using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber located on-axis in the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam with a mean neutrino energy of approximately 0.8 GeV. In this note, the mapping from reconstructed kinematics to truth quantities, particularly from reconstructed to true neutrino energy, is validated by comparing the distribution of reconstructed hadronic energy in data to that of the model prediction in different muon scattering angle bins after conditional constraint from the muon momentum distribution in data. The success of this validation gives confidence that the missing energy in the MicroBooNE detector is well-modeled within its uncertainties in simulation, enabling the unfolding to an energy-dependent triple-differential measurement over muon momentum, muon scattering angle, and neutrino energy. The unfolded measurement covers an extensive phase space, providing a wealth of information useful for future LArTPC experiments measuring neutrino oscillations. Comparisons with model predictions show the best agreement with Neut 5.4.0.1 at low energy, and with NuWro 19.02.01 at higher energies, particularly at forward muon scattering angles.

Multi-Differential Charged Current $\nu_{\mu}$ - Argon Cross Section without Pions in the Final State Measurement in MicroBooNE

MicroBooNE, an 85-tonne liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) detector is on-axis to the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) beamline facility at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. MicroBooNE is elucidating neutrino interactions with argon through cross-section measurements to refine interaction models and reduce uncertainties. In this poster, we present the status of the single and double multi-differential charged current (CC) cross section with zero pions in the final state (CC-0$\pi$) as a function of muon momentum ($0.1<p_\mu<2.0\,\mathrm{GeV/c}$) and the cosine of the muon angle ($-1<\cos\theta_\mu<1$). We present the details of the event selection and cross section extraction along with a set of tests using fake data to establish the robustness of the analysis methodology. We also discuss prospects for a future combined measurement with the Gd-H$_2$O target at the ANNIE experiment, to explore MicroBooNE’s proton multiplicity alongside ANNIE’s neutron multiplicity.
