Graphite/polyimide state-of-the-art panel discussion

The state-of-the-art of graphite/polyimides (GR/PI) composites is presented under two related subject areas: technical roadblocks to increased application and priority of technical problems. Technical roadblocks are the maturity of the 589K GR/PI material system and GR/PI structure fabrication technology. Priority of the GR/PI technical problems involves the selection of a primary polyimide resin system to reduce the scope of development problems. The GR/PI structure first priority problem is the selection and development of high temperature adhesive systems.

A brief summary of a comprehensive state of the art survey is presented. The survey includes five broadly applicable technology areas: flight path management, aircraft control systems, crew station & human factors, integration & interfacing technology, and fundamental technology. In addition the survey included military technologies which have a technology transfer potential to the five broadly applicable technology areas.

Maintenance of NASTRAN (R) as a state-of-the-art computer program

The maintenance requirements for a large, general purpose, finite element computer program are presented. The program is maintained as state-of-the-art on three computer systems (IBM, CDC, and UNIVAC) with respect to both finite element and computer technology. There are four primary areas involved in the maintenance effort: (1) error correction; (2) incorporation of advances in technology; (3) documentation; and (4) new level generation. The complexity of the maintenance effort is compounded by the sizes of the program (400,000 lines of code) and the documentation (7000 pages divided into seven manuals).

State-of-the-art SiAlON materials

The state of the art of SiAlONs is examined. The review includes work on phase relations, crystal structure, synthesis, fabrication, and properties of various SiAlONs. The essential features of compositions, fabrication methods, and microstructure are reviewed. High temperature flexure strength, creep, fracture toughness, oxidation, and thermal shock resistance are discussed. These data are compared to those for some currently produced silicon nitride ceramics to assess the potential of SiAlON materials for use in advanced gas turbine engines.

Attention is given to work on phase relations, crystal structure, synthesis, fabrication, and properties of various SiAlONs. The study is based on the information obtained from a general literature search, product literature, and visitations and interviews with manufacturers, users, and service centers. State of the art autopilots are documented with respect to total systems, components, and functions. Recommendations concerning potential areas of further research are also presented.

Fabrication and physical testing of graphite composite panels utilizing woven graphite fabric with current and advanced state-of-the-art resin systems

Three weaves were evaluated; a balanced plain weave, a balanced 8-harness satin weave, and a semiunidirectional crowfoot satin weave. The current state-of-the-art resin system selected was Fiberite's 934 Epoxy; the advanced resin systems evaluated were Phenolic, Phenolic/Novolac, Benzyl and Bismaleimide. The panels were fabricated for testing on NASA/Ames Research Center's Composites Modification Program. Room temperature mechanical tests only were performed by Hitco; the results are presented.

State of the art in subgrid scale modeling

The present state of the art in subgrid scale modeling for large eddy simulation is reviewed. It is found that the eddy viscosity models are sufficient for simulating homogeneous flows but are probably insufficient for inhomogeneous shear flows. One- and two-equation subgrid scale models probably will not be of great value in subgrid scale modeling, and full Reynolds stress models may be required. In the latter, the convection and diffusion terms are expected to be of greater importance than they are in time-average modeling, but the pressure redistribution terms may be of less importance. A scale similarity model may provide an alternative.

The state of the art of general aviation autopilots - Now and in the future

A study was performed under contract with NASA-Langley Research Center to document the state of the art of general aviation (GA) autopilots and provide information about the current status of GA autopilot technology. Results are based on findings obtained from general and product literature, as well as interviews with manufacturers, users and service centers. The autopilot systems are divided into three categories - wing leveler, automatic, and integrated flight control systems, and a listing of currently available autopilots and their available options is presented. Various autopilot components are discussed, such as the display, data entry devices, and computers; gyroscopes, altitude sensors, airspeed sensors and accelerometers are presented as the primary sensor types. Electromechanical servos, pneumatic and hydraulic actuators are compared in their ability to improve airframe response. Recommendations concerning potential areas of further research and possible areas of improvement are also presented.

Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes computations of transonic flows The-state-of-the-art

The state of the art in computer simulations for transonic flowfields requiring solutions for the Navier-Stokes equations is assessed. It is noted that current simulations of transonic flowfields require comparisons with experimental results because the simulations are not free from discretization errors. Cases of turbulence are treated with weighted variables in a time-averaged scheme to yield Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The turbulence is modeled in a first-order approach with a Reynolds stress tensor or a second-order approach where the tensor is obtained from the Navier-Stokes equations. The choice of coordinate systems and dependent variables for simulating the flow around airfoils is discussed, with particular attention to curvilinear coordinates. The determinations of boundary conditions is examined, along with numerical methods related to physical phenomena

Wind turbine siting: A summary of the state of the art

The process of siting large wind turbines may be divided into two broad steps: site selection, and site evaluation. Site selection is the process of locating windy sites where wind energy development shows promise of economic viability. Site evaluation is the process of determining in detail for a given site the economic potential of the site. The state of the art in the first aspect of siting, site selection is emphasized. Several techniques for assessing the wind resource were explored or developed in the Federal Wind Energy Program. Local topography and meteorology will determine which of the techniques should be used in locating potential sites. None of the techniques can do the job alone, none are foolproof, and all require considerable knowledge and experience to apply correctly. Therefore, efficient siting requires a strategy which is founded on broad based application of several techniques without relying solely on one narrow field of expertise.

State-of-the-art survey of multimode fiber optic wavelength division multiplexing

Optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems, with signals transmitted on different wavelengths through a single fiber, can have increased information capacity and fault isolation properties over single wavelength optical systems. This paper describes a typical WDM system. Also, a state-of-the-art survey of optical multimode components which could be used to implement the system is made. The components to be surveyed are sources, multiplexers, and detectors. Emphasis is given to the demultiplexer techniques which are the major development components in the WDM system.

Photovoltaic power conditioning subsystem: State of the art and development opportunities

Photovoltaic systems, the state of the art of power conditioning subsystem components, and the design and operational interaction between photovoltaic systems and host utilities are detailed in this document. Major technical issues relating to the design and development of power conditioning systems for photovoltaic application are considered; these include: (1) standards, guidelines, and specifications; (2) cost effective hardware design; (3) impact of advanced components on power conditioning development; (4) protection and safety; (5) quality of power; (6) system efficiency; and (7) system integration with the host utility. Theories of harmonic distortion and reactive power flow are discussed, and information about power conditioner hardware and manufacturers is provided.

State of the art survey of network operating systems development

The results of the State-of-the-Art Survey of Network Operating Systems (NOS) performed for Goddard Space Flight Center are presented. NOS functional characteristics are presented in terms of user communication data migration, job migration, network control, and common functional categories. Products (current or future) as well as research and prototyping efforts are summarized. The NOS products which are revelant to the space station and its activities are evaluated.

A new art code for tomographic interferometry

A new algebraic reconstruction technique (ART) code based on the iterative refinement method of least squares solution for tomographic reconstruction is presented. Accuracy and the convergence of the technique is evaluated through the application of numerically generated interferometric data. It was found that, in general, the accuracy of the results was superior to other reported techniques. The iterative method unconditionally converged to a solution for which the residual was minimum. The effects of increased data were studied. The inversion error was found to be a function of the input data error only. The convergence rate, on the other hand, was affected by all three parameters. Finally, the technique was applied to experimental data, and the results are reported.

Monitoring real-time navigation processes using the automated reasoning tool (ART)

An expert system is described for monitoring and controlling navigation processes in real-time. The ART-based system features data-driven computation, accommodation of synchronous and asynchronous data, temporal modeling for individual time intervals and chains of time intervals, and hypothetical reasoning capabilities that consider alternative interpretations of the state of navigation processes. The concept is illustrated in terms of the NAVEX system for monitoring and controlling the high speed ground navigation console for Mission Control at Johnson Space Center. The reasoning processes are outlined, including techniques used to consider alternative data interpretations. Installation of the system has permitted using a single operator, instead of three, to monitor the ascent and entry phases of a Shuttle mission.

The new Langley Research Center advanced real-time simulation (ARTS) system

Based on a survey of current local area network technology with special attention paid to high bandwidth and very low transport delay requirements, NASA's Langley Research Center designed a new simulation subsystem using the computer automated measurement and control (CAMAC) network. This required significant modifications to the standard CAMAC system and development of a network switch, a clocking system, new conversion equipment, new consoles, supporting software, etc. This system is referred to as the advanced real-time simulation (ARTS) system. It is presently being built at LaRC. This paper provides a functional and physical description of the hardware and a functional description of the software. The requirements which drove the design are presented as well as present performance figures and status.

The Langley Advanced Real-Time Simulation (ARTS) system

This paper is intended as a status report on the ARTS system. It briefly describes the architecture and principal subsystems including: the CAMAC network system (hardware and software), the clocking system, the signal converters, the control consoles, and the minicomputer and microcomputer interfaces. The performance and reliability of the system exceeds expectations and component failure data over an 11-month period are presented. Planned enhancements, including the replacement of the mainframe computers, are discussed.
