Picometer-Level Metrology of Test Articles on the Road to Habitable Worlds Observatory

The Habitable Worlds Observatory will revolutionize our understanding of the universe by directly detecting biosignatures on extrasolar planets and allow us to answer the question if we are alone in the universe. To accomplish the tight science goals associated with this mission, the development of an ultrastable observatory with a coronagraphic instrument is necessary. The observatory itself may need to stay stable on the order of 10 picometers over a wavefront control cycle, orders of magnitude more stable than what is required on current space missions. The metrology to verify stability requirements must be roughly a factor of ten more stable. The ultrastable laboratory at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center has further stabilized its testbed to allow for dynamic measurements on diffuse and specular objects on the order of single picometers, and we are currently measuring drifts on the orders of tens of picometers over different temporal bands. This paper will discuss the mechanical updates to the testbed setup, the analysis performed on several test articles, and the path forward on the road to measuring achieving the required stability for Habitable Worlds Observatory.

Implementation of a Compact Self-Aligned Focusing Schlieren System for Measurements with the SBLT-II Flight Test Article

Previous flight testing of a supersonic natural laminar flow airfoil on the NASA F-15Baircraft showed evidence of multiple impinging shocks (shock train) of unknown origin, which generated sufficient crossflow on the airfoil to affect the primary measurement goal of transition location. A compact self-aligned focusing schlieren (SAFS) system is being developed to visualize this shock train on the forward surface of the Supersonic Boundary Layer Transition - PhaseII (SBLT-II) flight test article. Details of the design of the SAFS flight system, the constraints imposed by the imaging pod that will be mounted to the F-15B aircraft, preliminary laboratory results obtained with the system, and challenges associated with integrating the imaging system into the aircraft are presented. The resulting schlieren images obtained from this flight test will allow for a three-dimensional reconstruction of the unknown shock structure, validating the use of SAFS for flight testing.

An intumescent coating for improved fuel fire protection of heat sensitive articles.

Intumescent coating compositions have been prepared using the ammonium salt of 4-nitroaniline-2-sulfonic acid and a copolymer of polysulfide-epoxy resin as the binder, into which have been dispersed various fillers. The fillers used in the study were low density microballoons for density control and fibers for controlled intumescence on contoured substrates. The filler effect on the thermal-physical efficiency of coatings has been measured. The coating utilizing short length silica fibers has been shown to have superior mechanical, environmental, and thermal properties. The coating applied to the exterior of loaded weapons has increased the time-to-detonation from three minutes for the unprotected weapon to 10-13 minutes.

Method for compression molding of thermosetting plastics utilizing a temperature gradient across the plastic to cure the article

A method is described for compression molding of thermosetting plastics composition. Heat is applied to the compressed load in a mold cavity and adjusted to hold molding temperature at the interface of the cavity surface and the compressed compound to produce a thermal front. This thermal front advances into the evacuated compound at mean right angles to the compression load and toward a thermal fence formed at the opposite surface of the compressed compound.
