The present work outlines eight candidate navigation systems for autonomous target relative navigation near a comet, asteroid, or planet. An analytic model is developed for each system, showing how the solution of the relative state vector is obtained from measurement data.
Special orbit determination algorithms were developed to accommodate the size and speed limitations of on-board computer systems of the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System. The algorithms use square root sequential filtering methods. A new method for the time update of the square root covariance matrix was also developed. In addition, the time update method was compared with another square root convariance propagation method to determine relative performance characteristics. Comparisions were based on the results of computer simulations of the LANDSAT-D satellite processing pseudo range and pseudo range-rate measurements from the phase one GPS. A summary of the comparison results is presented.

Analyses have indicated that the NASA Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) can furnish its orbital users accurate, low cost onboard navigation services via two different modes: (1) Forward-Link Scheduled Tracking, designated 'Block-I', and (2) Forward-Link Beacon Tracking, designated 'Block II'. Attention is presently given to the Block-I and Block-II system configurations, signal definition, and observation data descriptions. Projected accuracies for orbit-determination, time-determination, and frequency-determination are presented, in conjunction with user-navigation scenarios and covariance analysis results detailing error sources and magnitudes. The status of the two navigation service modes in both TDRSS and Advanced TDRSS is noted.
The paper examines the use of stereo vision (SV) for obstacle detection in semiautonomous land navigation. Feature-based and field-based paradigms for SV are reviewed. The paper presents stochastic models and simple, efficient stereo matching algorithms for the field-based approach and describes a near-real-time vision system using these algorithms. Experimental results illustrate aspects of the stochastic models and lead to the first semiautonomous traversals of natural terrain to use SV for obstacle detection.
This paper describes skyline-based terrain matching, a new method for locating the vantage point of laser range-finding measurements on a global map previously prepared by satellite or aerial mapping. Skylines can be extracted from the range-finding measurements and modelled from the global map, and are represented in parametric, cylindrical form with azimuth angle as the independent variable. The three translational parameters of the vantage point are determined with a three-dimensional matching of these two sets of skylines.

This is a presentation to the DOI UAS Interagency group that is informational in nature; just sharing publicly available and previously released information on UAS regulations and some of the UAS operations Langley Center has, to create awareness with other government agencies.
GPS-based spacecraft navigation offers many performance and cost benefits, and GPS receivers are now standard GNC components for LEO missions. Recently, more and more high-altitude missions are taking advantage of the benefits of GPS navigation as well. High-altitude applications pose challenges, however, because receivers operating above the GPS constellations are subject to reduced signal strength and availability, and uncertain signal quality. This presentation will present the history and state-of-the-art in high-altitude GPS spacecraft navigation, including early experiments, current missions and receivers, and efforts to characterize and protect signals available to high-altitude users. Recent results from the very-high altitude MMS mission are also provided.
