Wind tunnel buffet load measuring technique

Indirect force measurement technique estimates unsteady forces acting on elastic model during wind tunnel tests. Measurement of forces is practically insensitive to errors in aeroelastic scaling between model and full-scale structure, simplifying design, fabrication and dynamic calibration.

An investigation of wing buffeting response at subsonic and transonic speeds. Phase 1: F-111A flight data analysis. Volume 2: Plotted power spectra

Volume 2 of this three volume report is presented. This volume presents plotted variations of power spectral density data with frequency for each structural response item for each data sampled and analyzed during the course of the investigation. Some of the information contained in Volume 1 are repeated to allow the reader to identify the specific conditions appropriate to each plot presented and to interpret the data.

An investigation of wing buffeting response at subsonic and transonic speeds. Phase 1: F-111A flight data analysis. Volume 3: Tabulated power spectra

Volume 3 of this three volume report is presented. This volume presents power spectral density in tabular form for the convenience of those who might wish to perform additional analysis. Some of the information contained in Volume 1 is again repeated (as in volume 2) in this volume to allow the reader to identify the specific conditions appropriate to each tabular listing and for further analysis.

An investigation of wing buffeting response at subsonic and transonic speeds. Phase 2: F-111A flight data analysis. Volume 2: Plotted power spectra

Plotted power spectra for all of the flight points examined during the Phase 2 flight data analysis are presented. Detailed descriptions of the aircraft, the flight instrumentation and the analysis techniques are given. Measured and calculated vibration mode frequencies are also presented to assist in further interpretation of the PSD data.

An investigation of wing buffeting response at subsonic and transonic speeds. Phase 2: F-111A flight data analysis. Volume 3: Tabulated power spectra

Power spectral density (PSD) data for all of the flight points examined during the Phase 2 flight data analysis are presented in tabular form. Detailed descriptions of the aircraft, the flight instrumentation and the analysis techniques are given. Measured and calculated vibration mode frequencies are also presented to assist in further interpretation of the PSD data.

A method for predicting full scale buffet response with rigid wind tunnel model fluctuating pressure data. Volume 2: Power spectral densities for method assessment

The predicted upper and lower bounds power spectra for all of the cases and response items given in Volume 1 are plotted. The flight test power spectra are shown on each prediction plot for the nominal value of angle of attack that most closely agrees with the flexible angle for the prediction. The flight test and prediction conditions are given in tabular form for all cases considered.

Strain gage balances and buffet gages

One-piece strain gage force balances were developed for use in the National Transonic Facility (NTF). This was accomplished by studying the effects of the cryogenic environment on materials, strain gages, cements, solders, and moisture proofing agents, and selecting those that minimized strain gage output changes due to temperature. In addition, because of the higher loads that may be imposed by the NTF, these balances are designed to carry a larger load for a given diameter than conventional balances. Full cryogenic calibrations were accomplished, and wind tunnel results that were obtained from the Langley 0-3-Meter Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel were used to verify laboratory test results.

Navier-Stokes dynamics and aeroelastic computations for vortical flows, buffet and aeroelastic applications

The accomplishments achieved during the period include conference and proceedings publications, journal papers, and abstracts which are either published, accepted for publication or under review. Conference presentations and NASA highlight publications are also included. Two of the conference proceedings publications are attached along with a Ph.D. dissertation abstract and table of contents. In the first publication, computational simulation of three-dimensional flows around a delta wing undergoing rock and roll-divergence motions is presented. In the second publication, the unsteady Euler equations and the Euler equations of rigid body motion, both written in the moving frame of reference, are sequetially solved to simulate the limit-cycle rock motion of slender delta wings. In the dissertation abstract, unsteady flows around rigid or flexible delta wings with and without oscillating leading-edge flaps are considered.
