Reversible Ferroelectric Polarization Modulation of Chiral Molecular Ferroelectrics by Circularly Polarized Light

Abstract The optical modulation of ferroelectric polarization constitutes a transformative, non‐contact strategy for the precise manipulation of ferroelectric properties, heralding advancements in optically stimulated ferroelectric devices. Despite its potential, progress in this domain is constrained by material limitations and the intricate nature of the underlying mechanisms. Recent studies have achieved efficient regulation of ferroelectric polarization and thermal conductivity in chiral ferroelectric thin films through the application of left‐ and right‐handed circularly polarized light (LCP and RCP). Differential absorption of circularly polarized light (CPL) induces nonequilibrium carrier dynamics, generating distinctive interfacial electrostatic fields that enable precise control of ultrathin ferroelectric films. For (R)‐BINOL−DIPASi and (S)‐BINOL−DIPASi (C 26 H 26 O 2 Si), polarization changes surpass 23%, exhibiting opposite response under LCP and RCP excitation. In R chiral films, remnant polarization decreases from 1.05 µC cm − 2 under LCP to 0.85 µC cm − 2 under RCP, whereas in S chiral films, polarization increases from 0.85 µC cm − 2 under LCP to 0.98 µC cm − 2 under RCP. This reversible modulation facilitates reliable switching between ON and OFF states, presenting the potential of chiral ferroelectric materials for flexible, high‐speed integrated photonic sensor technologies.

Role of the chiral anomaly in polarized deeply inelastic scattering. III. Wess-Zumino-Witten contributions and chiral Ward identities for finite quark mass

We extend our prior results on the worldline computation of the axial vector-vector-vector (AVV) triangle anomaly in polarized deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) to the finite mass case by computing in addition the pseudoscalar-vector-vector (PVV) triangle graph. For the well-studied QED case, we show explicitly how the off-forward AVV pole exactly cancels an identical PVV pole. We then demonstrate the dramatic difference in QCD due to the chiral condensate, which qualitatively modifies anomalous Ward identities. As in the massless case, the anomaly pole in QCD is canceled by the dynamics of a primordial isosinglet pseudoscalar η ¯ -meson, whose Wess-Zumino-Witten coupling to the topological charge density shifts the pole to the physical η ′ mass, with the finite quark mass contribution differing by O ( 10 % ) from the Witten-Veneziano formula. We obtain a compact analytic expression for the finite mass corrections to Shore and Veneziano’s result that the proton’s net quark helicity Δ Σ ∝ χ QCD ′ | m = 0 ( 0 ) , the forward slope of the topological susceptibility in the chiral limit, and show they are of the order of a few percentages. Our prior prediction that the polarized DIS structure function g 1 is quenched by sphaleronlike topological transitions at small x is unaffected by quark mass effects. Our results illustrate how worldline computations of anomalous processes, in synergy with lattice computations and nonet chiral perturbation theory, can uncover novel nonperturbative features of QCD at the Electron-Ion Collider. Field-Driven Dynamics of Magnetic Hopfions

Herein, we present micromagnetic simulations on resonant spin wave modes of magnetic Hopfions up to 15 GHz driven by external magnetic fields. A sharp transition is found around 32 mT coinciding with a transition from Hopfions to magnetic torons. Furthermore, the modes exhibit characteristic amplitudes in frequency space accompanied by unique localization patterns in real space, and are found to be robust to damping around topological features, particularly vortex lines in Hopfions and Bloch points in torons. The marked differences in spin wave spectra between Hopfions, torons and target skyrmions can serve as fingerprints in future experimental validation studies of these novel 3d topological spin textures.

Anomalous hydrodynamics effective actions from holography

We derive an effective action for charged plasmas with an anomalous (abelian) global current charge current using holography. The holographic description is captured by the dynamics of an Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in an asymptotically AdS spacetime. The ’t Hooft anomaly contribution, which is encoded in the Chern-Simons term, contributes at the Gaussian order in the effective action only in the momentum diffusion sector, where it leads to chiral shear waves. However, as we demonstrate, beyond the Gaussian order, there is non-trivial imprint of the parity-violating anomaly term in sound and charge diffusion dynamics as well.

Physics of parameter correlations around the solar-scale enhancement in neutrino theory with unitarity violation

We discuss the physics of the three neutrino flavor transformation with non-unitary mixing matrix, with particular attention to the correlation between the $\nu$SM- and the $\alpha$ parameters which represent the effect of unitarity-violating (UV) new physics. Towards this goal, a new perturbative framework is created to illuminate the effect of non-unitarity in the region of the solar-scale enhanced oscillations. We refute the skepticism about the physical reality of the $\nu$Standard Model CP phase $\delta$–$\alpha$ parameter phase correlation by analysis with the SOL convention of $U_{{\tiny MNS}}$, in which $e^{\pm i \delta}$ is attached to $s_{12}$. Then, a comparative study between the solar- and atmospheric-scale oscillation regions allowed by the framework reveals a dynamical $\delta$–(blobs of the $\alpha$ parameters) correlation in the solar oscillation region, in sharp contrast to the “chiral”-type phase correlation $[e^{- i \delta} \bar{\alpha}_{\mu e},\ e^{- i \delta} \bar{\alpha}_{\tau e},\ \bar{\alpha}_{\tau \mu}]$ in the Particle Data Group convention seen in the atmospheric oscillation region. An explicit perturbative calculation to the first order in the $\nu_{\mu} \rightarrow \nu_{e}$ channel allows us to decompose the UV related part of the probability into the unitary evolution part and the genuine non-unitary part. We observe that the effect of non-unitarity tends to cancel between these two parts, as well as between the different $\alpha_{\beta \gamma}$ parameters.

Pion electroproduction measurements in the nucleon resonance region

Here, we report new pion electroproduction measurements in the $\Delta (1232)$ resonance, utilizing the SHMS - HMS magnetic spectrometers of Hall C at Jefferson Lab. The data focus on a region that exhibits a strong and rapidly changing interplay of the mesonic cloud and quark-gluon dynamics in the nucleon. The results are in reasonable agreement with models that employ pion cloud effects and chiral effective field theory calculations, but at the same time they suggest that an improvement is required to the theoretical calculations and provide valuable input that will allow their refinements. The data illustrate the potential of the magnetic spectrometers setup in Hall C towards the study the $\Delta (1232)$ resonance. These first reported results will be followed by a series of measurements in Hall C, that will expand the studies of the $\Delta (1232)$ resonance offering a high precision insight within a wide kinematic range from low to high momentum transfers.

Advances for QCD and the standard model: color-confining light-front holography and the principle of maximum conformality

Here, I review how the application of superconformal quantum mechanics and light-front holography leads to new insights into the physics of color confinement, the spectroscopy and dynamics of hadrons, as well as surprising supersymmetric relations between the masses of mesons, baryons, and tetraquarks. Spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking is automatically fulfilled by supersymmetric Light-Front QCD. The light-front holographic approach (HLFQCD) also predicts the behavior of the QCD running coupling and other observables from the nonperturbative color-confining domain to the perturbative domain. One can determine the QCD running coupling to high precision from the data of just a single experiment over the entire perturbative regime by using the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC). The PMC, which generalizes the conventional Gell-Mann-Low method for scale-setting in perturbative QED to non-Abelian QCD, provides a rigorous method for achieving unambiguous scheme-independent, fixed-order Standard Model predictions, consistent with the principles of the renormalization group. I also briefly review a novel feature of hadronic physics predicted by QCD: intrinsic heavy quarks.

Chiral-odd generalized parton distributions in the large-𝑁 𝑐 limit of QCD: Spin-flavor structure, polynomiality, and sum rules

We study the nonperturbative properties of the nucleon’s chiral-odd generalized parton distributions (transversity GPDs) in the large-𝑁 𝑐 limit of QCD. This includes the parametric ordering of the spin-flavor components, the polynomiality property of the moments, and the sum rules connecting the GPDs with the tensor form factors. A multipole expansion in the transverse momentum transfer is used to enumerate and interpret the structures in the nucleon matrix element of the chiral-odd partonic operator, including monopole, dipole and quadrupole terms. The 1/𝑁 𝑐 expansion of the GPDs is performed using the abstract mean-field picture of baryons in the large-𝑁 𝑐 limit and its symmetries. We derive a large-𝑁 𝑐 relation between the flavor-nonsinglet GPDs 𝐸$^{𝑢−𝑑}_𝑇$ and $\tilde{𝐻}^{𝑢−𝑑}_𝑇$ and test it with recent lattice QCD results. We show that the polynomiality property and sum rules of the GPDs are fulfilled with the restricted realization of translational and rotational invariance in the mean-field picture. The results provide a basis for the phenomenological analysis of chiral-odd GPDs and hard exclusive processes in the large-𝑁 𝑐 limit, and for calculations in specific dynamical models.

Light-induced magnetization from magnonic rectification

Rectification describes the conversion of an oscillating field or current into a quasi-static one and the most basic example of a rectifier is an AC/DC converter in electronics. This principle can be translated to nonlinear light-matter interactions, where optical rectification converts the oscillating electric field component of light into a quasi-static polarization and phononic rectification converts a lattice vibration into a quasi-static structural distortion. Here, we present a rectification mechanism for magnetism that we call magnonic rectification, where a spin precession is converted into a quasi-static magnetization through the force exerted by a coupled chiral phonon mode. The transiently induced magnetic state resembles that of a canted antiferromagnet, opening an avenue toward creating dynamical spin configurations that are not accessible in equilibrium.

Gluonic Structure from Instantons

The instanton vacuum provides an effective description of chiral symmetry breaking by local topological fluctuations of the gauge fields, as observed in lattice QCD simulations. The resulting effective dynamics at momenta below 1/$\bar{ρ}$ ≈ 0.6 GeV explains the basic features of light-quark correlation functions and is used extensively in studies of hadron structure. The instanton fields also make definite contributions to the gluonic structure of light hadrons, as expressed in the matrix elements of composite quark– gluon or gluon operators. The article reviews the gluonic structure of light hadrons (nucleon, pion) induced by instantons. This includes: (i) twist-2 parton distributions and momentum sum rule; (ii) twist-3 angular momentum and spin-orbit interactions; (iii) twist-3 and twist-4 quark–gluon correlations and power corrections; (iv) trace anomaly and hadron mass decomposition; (v) scalar gluon form factors and mechanical properties; (vi) axial anomaly and pseudoscalar gluon form factors. It also discusses possible further applications of the methods and recent developments including gauge field configurations beyond instantons.

Multiple ferroic orders and toroidal magnetoelectricity in the chiral magnet BaCoSiO 4

Discovering ferroic phase transitions and their consequential physical properties is at the core of condensed matter science due to rich physics and tremendous technological promises. BaCoSiO 4 , a chiral antiferromagnet, belongs to the tetrahedron-based chiral system, and exhibits diverse ferroic orders with coexisting chirality, polarity, trimerization, ferrorotational distortions, and magnetism. However, their mutual couplings remain to be explored. Here in this work, we used a comprehensive combination of several experimental tools—in situ x-ray, transmission electron microscopy, magnetization, and magnetoelectric measurements of single-crystalline BaCoSiO 4 —to investigate hierarchical phase transitions, their microscopic domain structures, and the resulting magnetoelectricity. We found that two different structural chiralities develop through distinct processes: global homochirality and local heterochirality induced by the ferrorotational distortions on top of existing polarization. In addition, magnetic chirality, with the simultaneous presence of net magnetic moment and magnetic toroidal moment, develops below 3.2 K due to the global chirality, which leads to magnetic field tunable toroidal magnetoelectricity. Thus, BaCoSiO 4 exhibits uniquely all four types of ferroic orders and provides an avenue to explore, for example, tunable or dynamic coupling of multiple ferroic degrees of freedom.

Catalytic Dynamic Kinetic Resolutions in Tandem to Construct Two-Axis Terphenyl Atropisomers

The defined structure of molecules bearing multiple stereogenic axes is of increasing relevance to materials science, pharmaceuticals, and catalysis. However, catalytic enantioselective approaches to control multiple stereogenic axes remain synthetically challenging. Here, we report the catalytic synthesis of two-axis terphenyl atropisomers, with complementary strategies to both chlorinated and brominated variants, formed with high diastereo- and enantioselectivity. The chemistry proceeds through a sequence of two distinct dynamic kinetic resolutions: first, an atroposelective ring opening of Bringmann-type lactones produces a product with one established axis of chirality, and second, a stereoselective arene halogenation delivers the product with the second axis of chirality established. In order to achieve these results, a class of Brønsted basic guanidinylated peptides, which catalyze an efficient atroposelective chlorination, is reported for the first time. In addition, a complementary bromination is reported, which also establishes the second stereogenic axis. These bromo-terphenyls are accessible following the discovery that chiral anion phase transfer catalysis by C 2 -symmetric phosphoric acids allows catalyst control in the second stereochemistry-determining event. Accordingly, we established the fully catalyst-controlled stereodivergent synthesis of all possible chlorinated stereoisomers while also demonstrating diastereodivergence in the brominated variants, with significant levels of enantioselectivity in all cases.

The magnetic, electronic, and light-induced topological properties in two-dimensional hexagonal FeX 2 (X = Cl, Br, I) monolayers

Using Floquet–Bloch theory, we propose to realize chiral topological phases in two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal FeX 2 (X = Cl, Br, I) monolayers under irradiation of circularly polarized light. Such 2D FeX 2 monolayers are predicted to be dynamically stable and exhibit both ferromagnetic and semiconducting properties. To capture the full topological physics of the magnetic semiconductor under periodic driving, we adopt ab initio Wannier-based tight-binding methods for the Floquet–Bloch bands, with the light-induced bandgap closings and openings being obtained as the light field strength increases. The calculations of slabs with open boundaries show the existence of chiral edge states. Interestingly, the topological transitions with branches of chiral edge states changing from zero to one and from one to two by tuning the light amplitude are obtained, showing that the topological Floquet phase of high Chern number can be induced in the present Floquet–Bloch systems.
