Mixed H(2)/H(sub infinity): Control with output feedback compensators using parameter optimization

Among the many possible norm-based optimization methods, the concept of H-infinity optimal control has gained enormous attention in the past few years. Here the H-infinity framework, based on the Small Gain Theorem and the Youla Parameterization, effectively treats system uncertainties in the control law synthesis. A design approach involving a mixed H(sub 2)/H-infinity norm strives to combine the advantages of both methods. This advantage motivates researchers toward finding solutions to the mixed H(sub 2)/H-infinity control problem. The approach developed in this research is based on a finite time cost functional that depicts an H-infinity bound control problem in a H(sub 2)-optimization setting. The goal is to define a time-domain cost function that optimizes the H(sub 2)-norm of a system with an H-infinity-constraint function.

Control of Rate-Bounded Hybrid Systems with Liveness Specifications

In the present paper we examine the control problem for a class of composite hybrid machines (CHMs) that consist of concurrent operation (employing synchronous composition) of elementary hybrid machines (EHMs), that allows both signal sharing and event synchronization. A controller can then be coupled with the plant by means of synchronous composition. We confine our attention to controllers that interact with the system only through event synchronization. We present an initial investigation of synthesis of liveness controllers for hybrid machines. To this end we define open hybrid machines as systems that can interact with the environment through event synchronization and can be therefor be "driven" to their marked configuration by user (controller). Liveness specifications must be associated with timing constraints. We may require that for a specified time limit, every run reach a marked configuration within that time limit. Alternatively, a more relaxed specification may be that, for some (unspecified) global time bound, every run of the system reach a marked configuration within that time bound. Finally, the least restrictive liveness requirement is that every run reach a marked configuration within a finite time limit (but we do not insist on the existence of a global time bound for all runs).

Cooperative synthesis of control and display augmentation for a STOL aircraft in the approach and landing task

Application of the Cooperative methodology to synthesize control/display augmentation systems for the piloted longitudinal landing task with a modern, statically-unstable, fighter aircraft is considered. Starting with a control augmentation law which yields augmented vehicle dynamics that meet Level I handling qualities specifications, the effect of time-delay in the Head-up-display is studied using model-based criterion. This evaluation showed that even with 'good' conventional dynamics, a realistic value of display time-delay will cause significant deterioration in pilot workload and piloted-system performance. Application of the Cooperative methodology to control augmentation alone resulted in augmented vehicle dynamics which provide direct control of the flight path from the pilot stick. Analytical evaluation of these dynamics indicates that such dynamics might lead to improved pilot ratings over conventional dynamics, especially in the presence of time-delays in the system. Also, application of the methodology to simultaneous synthesis of control augmentation and flight director laws revealed that it might be advantageous to consider the control/display trade-off in the early design stages.

Relationships between digital signal processing and control and estimation theory

Research directions in the fields of digital signal processing and modern control and estimation theory are discussed. Stability theory, linear prediction and parameter identification, system synthesis and implementation, two-dimensional filtering, decentralized control and estimation, and image processing are considered in order to uncover some of the basic similarities and differences in the goals, techniques, and philosophy of the disciplines.

Load relief and gust alleviation control study

The results of a study are presented in which a computerized optimal control techique was applied to the synthesis of a load relief control system for an advanced Saturn 5 derivative launch vehicle. This technique included selection of a load relief control law and computerized optimization of the controller gain schedules for a set of preselected adverse synthetic wind speed profiles. The gain optimization was effected using a hybrid optimizer program to minimize (optimize) a direct performance functional which specified the design goal (load relief) in engineering terms (explicit representation of maximum bending moments).

Dynamics and control of escape and rescue from a tumbling spacecraft

Papers on the problem of controlling a tumbling spacecraft before crew rescue is affected are presented. Fluid jets are considered; It is concluded that a gas jet results in long tumble times and low utilization efficiencies and a liquid jet appears more attractive because it can be directed. A conceptual design of an unmanned antitumbling module for automatic dock and detumble is formulated, and analyses of its dynamics and control, synthesis of position and attitude control systems, and sequence of operations are given. The minimum time detumble operation is analyzed with respect to (1) to a constraint on the magnitude of the control moment vector and (2) to constraints on the magnitude of each of the three components of the control moment vector. Internal passive and active mechanisms of energy dissipation are also considered. Structural flexibility modelling techniques and detumbling effects of structural flexibility on free-tumbling motion, are reviewed. Mass expulsion, momentum exchange, and moveable mass techniques are described, and methods of analyzing these devices are surveyed.

Analysis and testing of stability augmentation systems

Testing and evaluation of stability augmentation systems for aircraft flight control were conducted. The flutter suppression system analysis of a scale supersonic transport wing model is described. Mechanization of the flutter suppression system is reported. The ride control synthesis for the B-52 aeroelastic model is discussed. Model analyses were conducted using equations of motion generated from generalized mass and stiffness data.

IMAGES: A digital computer program for interactive modal analysis and gain estimation for eigensystem synthesis

An interactive digital computer program for modal analysis and gain estimation for eigensystem synthesis was written. Both mathematical and operation considerations are described; however, the mathematical presentation is limited to those concepts essential to the operational capability of the program. The program is capable of both modal and spectral synthesis of multi-input control systems. It is user friendly, has scratchpad capability and dynamic memory, and can be used to design either state or output feedback systems.

A research program in active control/aeroelasticity in the JIAFS at NASA Langley Research Center

A control law synthesis methodology for multifunctional active control system to satisfy root-mean-square load and response constraints as well as to meet stability robustness requirements at plant input and output was developed. Modern control theory, singular value analysis and optimization techniques were utilized. All stability and response derivative expressions were derived analytically for sensitivity study. The software is incorporated as an update to the AB/LAD general control design software package PADLOCS.

Substructural controller synthesis

A decentralized design procedure which combines substructural synthesis, model reduction, decentralized controller design, subcontroller synthesis, and controller reduction is proposed for the control design of flexible structures. The structure to be controlled is decomposed into several substructures, which are modeled by component mode synthesis methods. For each substructure, a subcontroller is designed by using the linear quadratic optimal control theory. Then, a controller synthesis scheme called Substructural Controller Synthesis (SCS) is used to assemble the subcontrollers into a system controller, which is to be used to control the whole structure.

Substructuring decomposition and controller synthesis

A decentralized design procedure is proposed for the control design for flexible structures. The structure to be controlled is decomposed into several substructures by using a natural decomposition called substructuring decomposition. For each substructure, a subcontroller is designed by using the linear quadratic optimal control theory. Then, a controller synthesis scheme called Substructural Controller Synthesis (SCS) is used to assemble the subcontrollers into a system controller, which is to be used to control the whole structure. A plane truss example is used to illustrate the efficacy of the proposed method.

Control Systems

Boeing Commercial Airplane Company's Flight Control Department engineers relied on Langley developed software package known as ORACLS to develop an advanced control synthesis package for both continuous and discrete control system. Package was used by Boeing for computerized analysis of new system designs. Resulting applications include a multiple input/output control system for the terrain-following navigation equipment of the Air Forces B-1 Bomber, and another for controlling in flight changes of wing camber on an experimental airplane. ORACLS is one of 1,300 computer programs available from COSMIC.
