Database work for the new cross section standards evaluation

An effort is now underway to produce a new evaluation of the neutron standards. It is important to maintain experimental programs to increase the quality and extend the database for the neutron cross section standards in order to improve evaluations of them that will be used to convert cross section measurements made relative to those standards. Measurements have been made for most of the standard cross sections since the last evaluation of the standards. The improved database includes the cross sections for the H(n,n), 6Li(n,t), 10B(n,αγ), 10B(n,α), C(n,n), Au(n,γ), 235U(n,f) and 238U(n,f) standard reactions and ratios among them. The database also includes the 238U(n,γ) and 239Pu(n,f) cross sections in addition to the standard cross sections. Those data were included since there are many ratio measurements of those cross sections with the standards and absolute data are available for them.

Erratum: Monoenergetic photon-induced fission cross-section ratio measurements for U 235 , U 238 , and Pu 239 from 9.0 to 17.0 MeV

In this erratum we report a correction to the previously published photofission cross-section ratio data. The actinide fission-chamber foils utilized in this work were extensively characterized during a new campaign using α- and γ-ray spectroscopy, and 2π alpha counting. These three techniques agreed, resulting in an improved accuracy of the fission-chamber foil masses used in the original experiment. The foil masses measured by α spectroscopy are detailed in Table I. All foils were counted on the same α spectrometer, using an identical geometry, which reduces the systematic uncertainty in the calculated mass ratios since the α spectrometer efficiency cancels out in the ratio. This results in a relative uncertainty on the mass ratio of 1.0% for 235 U/ 238 U, 0.62% for 239 Pu/ 235 U, and 1.1% for 239 Pu/ 238 U. The published cross-section ratio data are re-calculated to reflect the updated target masses and uncertainties. The new mass values cause a 2.40% decrease for the σ( 235 U(γ, f)/ 238 U(γ, f)) ratio, a 5.10% decrease for the σ( 235 U(γ, f)/ 239 Pu(γ, f)) ratio, and a 2.77% decrease for the σ( 238 U(γ, f)/ 239 Pu(γ, f)) ratio. The updated cross-section ratios are presented in Tables II, III, and IV, which are corrected versions of Tables III, IV, and V in Ref. [1]

Probing the CP structure of the top quark Yukawa at the future muon collider

We study the top-Higgs coupling with a CP violating phase ξ at a future multi-TeV muon collider. We focus on processes that are directly sensitive to the top quark Yukawa coupling: $t$$\overline{t}$$h$, $tbhμν$, and $t$$\overline{t}$$h$$v$$\overline{v}$ with $h$ → $b$$\overline{b}$ and semileptonic top decays. At different energies, different processes dominate the cross section, providing complementary information. At and above an energy of $\mathcal{O}$(10) TeV, vector boson fusion processes dominate. As we show, in the Standard Model there is destructive interference in the vector boson fusion processes $t$$\overline{t}$$h$$v$$\overline{v}$ and $tbhμν$ between the top quark Yukawa and Higgs-gauge boson couplings. A CP-violating phase changes this interference, and the cross section measurement is very sensitive to the size of the CP-violating angle. Although we find that the cross sections are measured to $\mathcal{O}$(50%) statistical uncertainty at 1σ, a 10 and 30 TeV muon collider can bound the CP-violating angle |ξ| ≲ 9.0° and |ξ| ≲ 5.4°, respectively. However, cross section measurements are insensitive to the sign of the CP-violating angle. To determine that the coupling is truly CP violating, observables sensitive to CP-violation must be measured. We find in the $t$$\overline{t}$$h$ process the azimuthal angle between the $t$ + $\overline{t}$ plane and the initial state muon+Higgs plane shows good discrimination for ξ = ±0.1π.

Measurement of cross sections for mesonless charged-current muon neutrino interactions on argon with and without protons at MicroBooNE

urrent and upcoming neutrino experiments at Fermilab will rely on liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs) as the primary detector technology. To reach the ambitious precision required for their physics goals, a detailed understanding of neutrino-argon scattering must be achieved. For the present Short-Baseline Neutrino program, the dominant reaction channel is charged-current muon neutrino interactions leading to mesonless final states with and without protons. Using a large data set of neutrino interactions recorded by the MicroBooNE LArTPC detector at Fermilab, we report progress towards new measurements of differential cross sections in this channel. The analysis leverages multiple event reconstruction paradigms and observables specifically chosen to maximize sensitivity to nuclear effects of interest for improving neutrino scattering models. Related previous cross-section results from MicroBooNE and a preview of what to expect from the new analysis will both be featured in this presentation.

Measurement of Neutral-Current $\pi^0$ Cross Section in MicroBooNE using Wire-Cell Reconstruction

This note presents the extraction of flux-averaged total and differential neutral-current $π^0$ cross section measurements, based on the Wiener-SVD unfolding method, using the MicroBooNE Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) and the Wire-Cell reconstruction paradigm. This measurement is critical for single-photon searches as neutral-current pion production represents one of the largest sources of background. We report the results for an exposure corresponding to 5.327 × 10 19 protons-on-target (POT).

Measurements of W + W - + ≥ 1 jet production cross-sections in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Fiducial and differential cross-section measurements of W + W - production in association with at least one hadronic jet are presented. These measurements are sensitive to the properties of electroweak-boson self-interactions and provide a test of perturbative quantum chromodynamics and the electroweak theory. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data collected at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . Events are selected with exactly one oppositely charged electron-muon pair and at least one hadronic jet with a transverse momentum of p T > 30 GeV and a pseudorapidity of |η| < 4.5. After subtracting the background contributions and correcting for detector effects, the jet-inclusive W + W - + ≥ 1 jet fiducial cross-section and W + W - + jets differential cross-sections with respect to several kinematic variables are measured. These measurements include leptonic quantities, such as the lepton transverse momenta and the transverse mass of the W + W - system, as well as jet-related observables such as the leading jet transverse momentum and the jet multiplicity. Limits on anomalous triple-gauge-boson couplings are obtained in a phase space where interference between the Standard Model amplitude and the anomalous amplitude is enhanced.

Transverse Enhancement, Longitudinal Quenching and Coulomb Sum Rule in e-$^{12}$C and e-$^{16}$O Scattering

We present a short summary of a phenomenological analysis of all available electron scattering data on 12 C 12 C (about 6600 differential cross section measurements) and on 16 O 16 O (about 250 measurements) within the framework of the quasielastic superscaling model (including Pauli blocking). All quasielastic and inelastic cross section measurements are included down to the lowest momentum transfer ? q (including photo-production data). We find that there is enhancement of the transverse quasielastic response function and quenching of the longitudinal response function at low ? q (in addition to Pauli blocking). We extract parameterizations of a ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? multiplicative low ? q "Longitudinal Quenching Factor" and an ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? additive "Transverse Enhancement" contribution. Additionally, we find that the excitation of nuclear states contribute significantly (up to 30\%) to the Coulomb Sum Rule. We extract the most accurate determination of the sum rule to date and find it to be in disagreement with random phase approximation based calculations but in reasonable agreement with recent theoretical calculations such as "First Principle Green's Function Monte Carlo".

J/psi photoproduction close to threshold at GlueX

Close-to-threshold photoproduction probes small-size gluon configurations in the proton. Under certain assumptions it allows us to study the proton properties, as gluonic GPDs, anomalous contribution to the mass of the proton, gravitational form factors, and the mass radius of the proton. A careful comparison of the experimental data with the theoretical predictions would help us to verify the validity of those assumptions. The first cross-section measurements of near-threshold reaction by the GlueX Collaboration (Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 072001 (2019)) has attracted a considerable theoretical interest. Along with the relation to the gluonic properties of the proton, the measurement exploited a possibility of the LHCb Pentaquark production in the s-channel of the observed reaction, placing a limit of the decay probability . Here we present new GlueX results based on a four-times larger data set. The higher statistics along with the full acceptance of the GlueX spectrometer allow us to measure the differential cross section in several energy ranges and compare the results with several theoretical calculations.

Inclusive and differential measurements of the $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\mathcal{γ}$ cross section and the $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}\mathcal{γ}/\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}$ cross section ratio in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

Inclusive and differential cross section measurements of top quark pair $(\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}})$ production in association with a photon (γ) are performed as a function of lepton, photon, top quark, and $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}$ kinematic observables, using data from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 , collected at the CERN LHC with the CMS detector. Events containing two leptons (electrons or muons) and a photon in the final state are considered. The fiducial cross section of $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}$γ is measured to be 137 ± 8 fb, in a phase space including events with a high momentum, isolated photon. The fiducial cross section of $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}$γ is also measured to be 56 ± 5 fb when considering only events where the photon is emitted in the production part of the process. Both measurements are in agreement with the theoretical predictions, of 126 ± 19 fb and 57 ± 5 fb, respectively. Differential measurements are performed at the particle and parton levels. Additionally, inclusive and differential ratios between the cross sections of $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}$γ and $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}$ production are measured. The inclusive ratio is found to be 0.0133 ± 0.0005, in agreement with the standard model prediction of 0.0127 ± 0.0008. The top quark charge asymmetry in $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}$γ production is also measured to be −0.012 ± 0.042, compatible with both the standard model prediction and with no asymmetry.

Absolute Photoionization Cross Section of the Simplest Enol, Vinyl Alcohol

The absolute photoionization cross section of vinyl alcohol was determined by multiplexed photoionization mass spectrometry of the Norrish type II photodissociation of butanal at 308 nm. The measured cross sections at 10.005 and 10.205 eV are 7.5 ± 1.9 MB and 8.1 ± 1.9 MB respectively. Here, a higher signal-to-noise ratio photoionization spectrum of vinyl alcohol was recorded via the pyrolysis of 2-chloroethanol and scaled to the absolute cross sections measured using the Norrish type II method. From comparison of our spectrum with previously reported photoelectron spectra we conclude that vinyl alcohol is mainly ionized by direct ionization in the energy range 9 – 9.6 eV, whereas autoionization is responsible for the steady rise in the photoionization spectrum above the end of the Franck-Condon envelope at 9.9 eV.

Measurement of $\nu_\mu/\bar\nu_\mu$ CC double-differential cross sections on MINERvA hydrocarbon target for the shallow inelastic scattering background region

Cross section measurements are essential for all neutrino oscillation experiments. In fact, uncertaintiesassociated to cross section model parameters constitute one of the dominant sources oferrors in current oscillation analyses. In particular, understanding neutrino-induced pion productionin the kinematic regime known as shallow inelastic scattering (SIS) is critical for improvingneutrino interaction modeling in event generators. In this study, 416,233 (237,468) muon neutrino(antineutrino) interactions are measured in a SIS background region, predominantly made ofbaryon resonances. The analyzed datasets were collected from 2013 to 2019, comprising neutrinosgenerated by the Fermilab NuMI facility, with mean energy of 6 GeV, and the interactions occurredon the MINERvA hydrocarbon target. The measurements are presented as double-differential crosssections in terms of the outgoing muon longitudinal and transverse momentum components, aswell as the Bjorken x and y variables. Comparisons between the extracted data and predictionsfrom several generators reveal significant discrepancies across most kinematic bins.

Measurement of 𝐽∕𝜓and 𝜓(2𝑆)production in 𝑝 +𝑝and 𝑝 +𝑑interactions at 120 GeV

We report the p + p and p + d differential cross sections measured in the SeaQuest experiment for J/psi and psi(2S) production at 120GeV beam energy covering the forward x-Feynman (x(F)) range of 0.5 < x(F) < 0.9. The measured cross sections are in good agreement with theoretical calculations based on the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) using the long-distance matrix elements deduced from a recent global analysis of proton- and pion-induced charmonium production data. The sigma(psi(2S))/sigma(J/psi) cross section ratios are found to increase as x(F) increases, indicating that the q (q) over bar. annihilation process has larger contributions in the psi(2S) production than the J/psi production. The sigma(pd)/2 sigma(pp) cross section ratios are observed to be significantly different for the DrellYan process and J/psi production, reflecting their different production mechanisms. We find that the sigma(pd)/2 sigma(pp) ratios for J/psi production at the forward x(F) region are sensitive to the (d) over bar/(u) over bar flavor asymmetry of the proton sea, analogous to the Drell-Yan process. The transverse momentum (p(T)) distributions for J/psi and psi(2S) production are also presented and compared with data collected at higher center-of-mass energies.

Measurement of the cross section of the Q=4.4398 MeV 12 C (n, n'γ) reaction from threshold to 16.5 MeV using γ and correlated n–γ detection

The Q=4.4398 MeV 12 C (n, n'γ) cross section was measured using a white incident neutron source through the detection of γ rays only and n–γ coincidences using a segmented liquid scintillator detector array. While the n–γ technique utilized here is more generally applicable to a wide variety of neutron scattering measurements, the γ-only technique was successfully applied to this reaction to exploit the precise time resolution and high efficiency of this detection system to yield results with unprecedented statistical precision and total uncertainties < 2 % from reaction threshold up to 16 MeV incident neutron energy, clearly resolving many features in this reaction that were previously not well known. The γ-only and n–γ results are consistent with each other for the majority of the incident energy range covered in this paper, thereby lending validation to the n–γ technique for future measurements, though significant disagreements are observed between both results and with the ENDF/B-VIII.0 nuclear data evaluation. These differences are particularly noticeable in the recently evaluated energy range below 6.5 MeV, and also near 14 MeV where a “sawtooth”-like feature is observed similar to that in other 12 C+n reaction channels. Finally, both γ-only and n–γ results are presented here with thorough covariance derivations.

Updating the BNB Flux Prediction at SBND

Precise, accurate neutrino flux predictions for neutrino beam experiments are crucial for physics results. Flux uncertainties contribute significantly to the total systematic uncertainties seen in modern accelerator neutrino measurements such as cross sections, oscillations, and BSM studies.. For over a decade, experiments utilizing Fermilab’s Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) have relied on the 2009 MiniBooNE flux prediction. However, the high-statistics era of the Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) program, with both SBND and ICARUS now operating, demands a modernized flux model and framework. While SBND is using the MiniBooNE flux model for its Generation 1 analyses, including many upcoming cross section measurements, future work will be based on a new flux model. In this talk, the ongoing work towards this new model will be outlined, including a new simulation framework (G4BNB), a new evaluation of model parameters from hadron scattering data, and a new framework for evaluating systematic uncertainties (BNBFP). Additionally, expansions to the flux model to include BSM contributions from neutral mesons will be discussed, as well as the PRISM capabilities of SBND to observe a wide range of off axis angles of the neutrino beam.

Scattering Calorimeter FY24 Deliverable Report

A simulation-based method has been developed to prototype new detector designs for nuclear data measurements utilizing neutron scattering. This method uses representative physics inputs for signal and background generation, full detector resolution smearing benchmarked by experimental data, and a neutron beam timing simulation to produce analyzable output like a physical measurement. A test case has been studied using a hybrid time-of-flight calorimeter detector for scattering cross-section measurements on 239 Pu with 1-5 MeV incident monoenergetic neutrons. Data analysis methods have been developed to perform event-level particle reconstruction and reaction channel discrimination. This analysis has been used to estimate the capability of the test detector to perform simultaneous scattering and fission cross section measurements, as well as its ability to provide neutron spectra and particle angular information.

First measurement of 𝑎$^{0}_{2}$⁡(1320) polarized photoproduction cross section

We measure for the first time the differential photoproduction cross section dσ/dt of the a 2 (1320) meson at an average photon beam energy of 8.5 GeV, using data with an integrated luminosity of 104 pb −1 collected by the GlueX experiment. We fully reconstruct the γp → ηπ 0 p reaction and perform a partial-wave analysis in the a 2 (1320) mass region with amplitudes that incorporate the linear polarization of the beam. This allows us to separate for the first time the contributions of natural- and unnatural-parity exchanges. Furthermore, these measurements provide novel information about the photoproduction mechanism, which is critical for the search for spin-exotic states.
