Dynamical ground state in the XY pyrochlore Yb2GaSbO7

Abstract The magnetic ground state of the pyrochlore Yb 2 GaSbO 7 has not been established. The persistent spin fluctuations observed by muon spin-relaxation measurements at low temperatures have not been adequately explained for this material using existing theories for quantum magnetism. Here we report on the synthesis and characterisation of Yb 2 GaSbO 7 to revisit the nature of the magnetic ground state. Through DC and AC magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and neutron scattering experiments, we observe evidence for a dynamical ground state that makes Yb 2 GaSbO 7 a promising candidate for disorder-induced spin-liquid or spin-singlet behaviour. This state is quite fragile, being tuned to a splayed ferromagnet in a modest magnetic field μ 0 H c ~ 1.5 T.

Dynamic modeling of brushless dc motors for aerospace actuation

A discrete time model for simulation of the dynamics of samarium cobalt-type permanent magnet brushless dc machines is presented. The simulation model includes modeling of the interaction between these machines and their attached power conditioners. These are transistorized conditioner units. This model is part of an overall discrete-time analysis of the dynamic performance of electromechanical actuators, which was conducted as part of prototype development of such actuators studied and built for NASA-Johnson Space Center as a prospective alternative to hydraulic actuators presently used in shuttle orbiter applications. The resulting numerical simulations of the various machine and power conditioner current and voltage waveforms gave excellent correlation to the actual waveforms collected from actual hardware experimental testing. These results, numerical and experimental, are presented here for machine motoring, regeneration and dynamic braking modes. Application of the resulting model to the determination of machine current and torque profiles during closed-loop actuator operation were also analyzed and the results are given here. These results are given in light of an overall view of the actuator system components. The applicability of this method of analysis to design optimization and trouble-shooting in such prototype development is also discussed in light of the results at hand.

Extending the family of reduced [Mn 12 O 12 (O 2 CR) 16 (H 2 O) x ] n- complexes, and their sensitivity to environmental factors

Here, the family of reduced [Mn 12 O 12 (O 2 CR) 16 (H 2 O) 4 ] n- (n = 1, 2) single-molecule magnets (SMMs) has been expanded with the synthesis of new members using I - as a stoichiometric one-electron reducing agent of the neutral n = 0 complexes. Electrochemical data, 1 H NMR spectra of the [Mn 12 O 12 (O 2 CCH 2 Cl) 16 (H 2 O) 3 ] 0,-,2- salts, and the crystal structures of two complexes, (PPh 4 )[Mn 12 O 12 (O 2 CCHCl 2 ) 16 (H 2 O) 4 ] and (PPh 4 ) 2 [Mn 12 O 12 (O 2 CCH 2 Cl) 16 (H 2 O) 3 ] have been obtained. For (PPh 4 ) 2 [Mn 12 O 12 (O 2 CCH 2 Cl) 16 (H 2 O) 3 ], the data confirm an S = 10 ground state, and magnetization vs dc field scans on a pristine crystal exhibit hysteresis loops possessing steps due to quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM). In addition, two forms of the cluster have been identified in the crystal with distinctly different relaxation barriers, with the faster-relaxing form being the majority one in pristine crystals from mother liquor, and the slower-relaxing one becoming the majority one in vacuum-dried samples. Similar behavior is seen for (PPh 4 )[Mn 12 O 12 (O 2 CCHCl 2 ) 16 (H 2 O) 4 ] with an S = 19 / 2 ground state, which shows three forms to be present in the hysteresis loops of a pristine crystal, all converting to a slow-relaxing form on vacuum-drying. High-frequency EPR spectra of the latter confirm a high axial anisotropy with $\mathcal{D}$ = -0.477 cm -1 and rationalize its effective relaxation barrier U eff = 57 K. The combined work emphasizes a high sensitivity of such ultra-small nanomagnets to environmental influences, affecting their properties significantly, especially their quantum properties that are so important to many potential new 21st century applications.

External Magnetic Field Reduction Techniques for the Advanced Stirling Radioisotope Generator

Linear alternators coupled to high efficiency Stirling engines are strong candidates for thermal-to-electric power conversion in space. However, the magnetic field emissions, both AC and DC, of these permanent magnet excited alternators can interfere with sensitive instrumentation onboard a spacecraft. Effective methods to mitigate the AC and DC electromagnetic interference (EMI) from solenoidal type linear alternators (like that used in the Advanced Stirling Convertor) have been developed for potential use in the Advanced Stirling Radioisotope Generator. The methods developed avoid the complexity and extra mass inherent in data extraction from multiple sensors or the use of shielding. This paper discusses these methods, and also provides experimental data obtained during breadboard testing of both AC and DC external magnetic field devices.

Dynamic modeling of brushless dc motor-power conditioner unit for electromechanical actuator application

A comprehensive digital model for the analysis of the dynamic-instantaneous performance of a power conditioner fed samarium-cobalt permanent magnet brushless DC motor is presented. The particular power conditioner-machine system at hand, for which this model was developed, is a component of an actual prototype electromechanical actuator built for NASA-JSC as a possible alternative to hydraulic actuators as part of feasibility studies for the shuttle orbiter applications. Excellent correlation between digital simulated and experimentally obtained performance data was achieved for this specific prototype. This is reported on in this paper. Details of one component of the model, its applications and the corresponding results are given in this paper.

Operation of normal-conducting rf cavities in multi-Tesla magnetic fields for muon ionization cooling: A feasibility demonstration

Ionization cooling is the preferred method for producing bright muon beams. This cooling technique requires the operation of normal conducting, radio-frequency (rf) accelerating cavities within the multi-tesla fields of dc solenoid magnets. Under these conditions, cavities exhibit increased susceptibility to rf breakdown, which can damage cooling channel components and imposes limits on channel length and transmission efficiency. We report, for the first time, stable high-vacuum, normal-conducting cavity operation at gradients of 50 MV / m in an external magnetic field of three tesla, through the use of beryllium cavity elements. This eliminates a significant technical risk that has previously been inherent in ionization cooling channel designs.

Coexistence of metamagnetism and slow relaxation of magnetization in ammonium hexafluoridorhenate

The (NH 4 ) 2 [ReF 6 ] (1) salt was studied by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, theoretical calculations, and magnetic measurements. 1 crystallizes in the trigonal space group P$\overline{3}$m1 (Re–F = 1.958(5) Å). In the Raman spectrum of 1, splitting of the observed peaks was observed and correlated to the valence frequencies of vibration of the [ReF 6 ] 2– anion. The study of the magnetic properties of 1, through DC and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements, reveals the coexistence of metamagnetism and slow relaxation of magnetization at low temperature, which is unusual in the molecular systems based on the paramagnetic 5d metal ions reported so far.

Role of washing solvents in defining the magnetic performance of Sm 2 Fe 17 N 3 obtained by reduction diffusion

Calciothermic reduction-diffusion (RD) is one of the leading synthesis methods for Sm 2 Fe 17 N 3 (SmFeN), but sintering of such RD-derived powders is hampered by oxidation and CaO byproducts. Here, we systematically evaluate how post-synthesis washing solvents govern powder chemistry and magnetic performance. RD-synthesized SmFeN powder was washed with several aqueous and non-aqueous solvents using identical washing protocols. This was followed by an assessment of both the as-washed powder as well as after annealing at 425 °C. Phase content was quantified by synchrotron PXRD and Rietveld refinement and SEM/EDS. The oxygen content of the powders was determined via inert gas fusion and the magnetization by DC magnetometry. While all aqueous-based solutions were able to remove CaO, the non-aqueous solutions were only effective with extended washing times. Prior to annealing, the crystalline phases and magnetic properties of the as-washed powders were largely the same regardless of washing solvent. However, differences emerge after annealing, where water-based washing markedly lowers the coercivity (H c ~3.8-4.3 kOe). In contrast, non-aqueous NH 4 Cl-methanol washing protocols were more effective in preserving coercivity (H c ~4.9-5.9 kOe). We attribute this to lower oxygen content in the non-aqueous samples (~9,400 ppm v ~6,400 ppm, respectively) which in turn reduced the formation of α-Fe during annealing. These results highlight the importance of solvent choice in washing RD-synthesized SmFeN and demonstrate that non-aqueous protocols, which better limit oxidation, outperform aqueous solvents despite the need for longer washing times.

Parametric Characterization of TES Detectors Under DC Bias

The X-ray integrated field unit (X-IFU) in European Space Agency's (ESA's) Athena mission will be the first high-resolution X-ray spectrometer in space using a large-format transition-edge sensor microcalorimeter array. Motivated by optimization of detector performance for X-IFU, we have conducted an extensive campaign of parametric characterization on transition-edge sensor (TES) detectors with nominal geometries and physical properties in order to establish sensitivity trends relative to magnetic field, dc bias on detectors, operating temperature, and to improve our understanding of detector behavior relative to its fundamental properties such as thermal conductivity, heat capacity, and transition temperature. These results were used for validation of a simple linear detector model in which a small perturbation can be introduced to one or multiple parameters to estimate the error budget for X-IFU. We will show here results of our parametric characterization of TES detectors and briefly discuss the comparison with the TES model.

Isotope engineering for spin defects in van der Waals materials

Abstract Spin defects in van der Waals materials offer a promising platform for advancing quantum technologies. Here, we propose and demonstrate a powerful technique based on isotope engineering of host materials to significantly enhance the coherence properties of embedded spin defects. Focusing on the recently-discovered negatively charged boron vacancy center ($${{{{{{{{\rm{V}}}}}}}}}_{{{{{{{{\rm{B}}}}}}}}}^{-}$$ V B − ) in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), we grow isotopically purified h 10 B 15 N crystals. Compared to$${{{{{{{{\rm{V}}}}}}}}}_{{{{{{{{\rm{B}}}}}}}}}^{-}$$ V B − in hBN with the natural distribution of isotopes, we observe substantially narrower and less crowded$${{{{{{{{\rm{V}}}}}}}}}_{{{{{{{{\rm{B}}}}}}}}}^{-}$$ V B − spin transitions as well as extended coherence timeT 2 and relaxation timeT 1 . For quantum sensing,$${{{{{{{{\rm{V}}}}}}}}}_{{{{{{{{\rm{B}}}}}}}}}^{-}$$ V B − centers in our h 10 B 15 N samples exhibit a factor of 4 (2) enhancement in DC (AC) magnetic field sensitivity. For additional quantum resources, the individual addressability of the$${{{{{{{{\rm{V}}}}}}}}}_{{{{{{{{\rm{B}}}}}}}}}^{-}$$ V B − hyperfine levels enables the dynamical polarization and coherent control of the three nearest-neighbor 15 N nuclear spins. Our results demonstrate the power of isotope engineering for enhancing the properties of quantum spin defects in hBN, and can be readily extended to improving spin qubits in a broad family of van der Waals materials.

dc electrical conductivity in strongly magnetized plasmas

A generalized Ohm's law is derived to treat strongly magnetized plasmas in which the electron gyrofrequency significantly exceeds the electron plasma frequency. Here, strong magnetization of electrons causes the frictional drag between electrons and ions due to Coulomb collisions to shift, producing an additional transverse resistivity term in the generalized Ohm's law that is perpendicular to both the current ($J$) and the Hall ($JxB$) direction. In the limit of very strong magnetization the parallel resistivity is found to increase by a factor of 3/2, and the perpendicular resistivity by a factor of $\frac{3}{4} \ln (m_i/m_e)$, where $m_i$ and $m_e$ are the ion and electron masses. These results suggest that strong magnetization significantly changes the magnetohydrodynamic evolution of a plasma.

An impedance analysis of double-stream interaction in semiconductors

The electromagnetic waves propagating through a drifting semiconductor plasma are studied from a macroscopic point of view in terms of double-stream interaction. The possible existing waves (helicon waves, longitudinal waves, ordinary waves, and pseudolongitudinal waves) which depend upon the orientation of the dc external magnetic field are derived. A powerful impedance concept is introduced to investigate the wave behavior of longitudinal (space charge) waves or pseudolongitudinal waves in a semiconductor plasma. The impedances due to one- and two-carrier stream interactions were calculated theoretically.

Automated parking garage system model

A one-twenty-fifth scale model of the key components of an automated parking garage system is described. The design of the model required transferring a vehicle from an entry level, vertically (+Z, -Z), to a storage location at any one of four storage positions (+X, -X, +Y, +Y, -Y) on the storage levels. There are three primary subsystems: (1) a screw jack to provide the vertical motion of the elevator, (2) a cam-driven track-switching device to provide X to Y motion, and (3) a transfer cart to provide horizontal travel and a small amount to vertical motion for transfer to the storage location. Motive power is provided by dc permanent magnet gear motors, one each for the elevator and track switching device and two for the transfer cart drive system (one driving the cart horizontally and the other providing the vertical transfer). The control system, through the use of a microprocessor, provides complete automation through a feedback system which utilizes sensing devices.
