Transitioning GlideinWMS, a multi domain distributed workload manager, from GSI proxies to tokens and other granular credentials

GlideinWMS is a distributed workload manager that has been used in production for many years to provision resources for experiments like CERN’s CMS, many Neutrino experiments, and the OSG. Its security model was based mainly on GSI (Grid Security Infrastructure), using X.509 certificate proxies and VOMS (Virtual Organization Membership Service) extensions. Even when other credentials, like SSH keys, were used to authenticate with resources, proxies were also added all the time, to establish the identity of the requestor and the associated memberships or privileges. This single credential was used for everything and was, often implicitly, forwarded wherever needed. The addition of identity and access tokens and the phase-out of GSI forced us to reconsider the security model of GlideinWMS, to handle multiple credentials which can differ in type, technology, and functionality. Both identity tokens and access tokens are supported. GSI proxies even if no more mandatory, are still used, together with various JWT (JSON Web Token) based tokens and other certificates. The functionality of the credentials, defined by issuer, audience, and scope, also differ: a credential can allow access to a computing resource, or can protect the GlideinWMS framework from tampering, or can grant read or write access to storage, can provide an identity for accounting or auditing, or can provide a combination of any the formers. Furthermore, the tools in use do not include automatic forwarding and renewal of the new credentials so credential lifetime and renewal requirements became part of the discussion as well. In this paper, we will present how GlideinWMS was able to change its design and code to respond to all these changes.

Block2 : A comprehensive open source framework to develop and apply state-of-the-art DMRG algorithms in electronic structure and beyond

block2 is an open source framework to implement and perform density matrix renormalization group and matrix product state algorithms. Out-of-the-box it supports the eigenstate, time-dependent, response, and finite-temperature algorithms. In addition, it carries special optimizations for ab initio electronic structure Hamiltonians and implements many quantum chemistry extensions to the density matrix renormalization group, such as dynamical correlation theories. The code is designed with an emphasis on flexibility, extensibility, and efficiency and to support integration with external numerical packages. Here, we explain the design principles and currently supported features and present numerical examples in a range of applications.

Metamodeling Time-Temperature Creep Parameters

Abstract There exist many time-temperature parameter (TTP) models for creep rupture prediction of components including the Larson–Miller (LM), Manson–Haferd (MH), Manson–Brown (MB), Orr–Sherby–Dorn (OSD), Manson–Succop (MS), Graham–Walles (GW), Chitty–Duval (CD), Goldhoff–Sherby (GS) models. It remains a challenge to determine which model is “best”, capable of accurate interpolation and physically realistic extrapolation of creep rupture data for a given material. In this study, metamodeling is applied to create a unified TTP metamodel that combines and regresses into twelve TTP models (eight existing and four newly derived). An analysis of the mathematical problems that exist in TTP models is provided. A matlab code is written that can: (1) calibrate the material constants of any of the twelve TTP models (using the metamodel); (2) determine the most suitable stress-parameter function; (3) and report the normalized mean square error (NMSE) of rupture predictions for a given material database. Using the metamodel, and code, a design engineer can make an intelligent selection of the “best” TTP model for creep resistant design. This process is demonstrated using four isotherms of alloy P91 creep rupture data. To assess the influence of material, further validation is performed on alloys Hastelloy X, 304SS, and 316SS. It is determined that the “best” model is dependent on material type and the quality and quantity of available data.

Multi-Energy Differential Evolution Reconstruction (MEnDER 1D) for Proton Deflectometry

This code is designed to reconstruct magnetic field deflections, and thus the path-integrated magnetic field, from sets of proton images at two distinct proton probe energies. A differential evolution (DE) algorithm is used to iteratively update a population of solution candidates of the magnetic deflections of the protons for reconstructing the input images, selecting improved candidates as they are discovered. This algorithm was written using MATLAB (R2019a) and makes use of the Image Processing and Parallel Processing Toolboxes.

Exascale-capable cellular automaton for nucleation and grain growth

This model is a cellular automata-based algorithm used to predict grain-scale microstructure development. Nucleation and growth of existing grains are considered in an initially liquid domain, where the temperature field evolution is either driven through heat transport simulation data or a frozen temperature approximation (i.e., a constant cooling rate and a fixed thermal gradient). The growth of grains is based on the decentered octahedron algorithm published by Gandin and Rappaz (https://doi.org/10.1016/S1359-6454(96)00303-5), where the grain envelopes are tracked as approximations of the evolving dendritic growth front. The input heat transport data, which can come from simulation of an arbitrary processing technique, consists of coordinates and times at which said coordinates fall below the liquidus and solidus temperatures for the final time. As a result, only the final solidification of a given region is modeled (no remelting). The code is designed to be compatible with pre-Exascale architectures, and uses MPI and the Kokkos library to decompose the computational domain and offload solidification calculations to GPUs.

DERMS-RT (Distributed Energy Resource Management Solution using Real-Time Optimization) [SWR-20-46]

DERMS-RT provides a distributed energy resource management solution using real-time optimization to control different types of distributed energy resources (DERs) — such as rooftop PVs, battery energy storage systems, HVAC loads, electric water heater loads, and EV charging loads, and use these DERs to provide distribution voltage regulation and peak demand management services. The control approach implemented by DERM-RT is developed based on the real-time optimal power flow and distributed control previously developed by NREL researchers. The software codes are designed to provide modular DER management solution that can be easily applied to control heterogeneous DERs in distribution grids in coordination with centralized utility management systems. Also, DERMS-RT provides application programming interface (API) to extract useful grid model information from an open-source power system simulation software, use the information to solve the optimization problem, and apply the optimal set-points to the controlled DERs. In this way, DERMS-RT provides a plug-and-play function for implementing the real-time DER control on different utility system models, and it can be used as a simulation testbed to demonstrate the impact of real-time DER optimization on improving grid operations.

PFLOTRAN 5

PFLOTRAN leverages massively parallel, high performance computing to simulate large-scale non-isothermal multiphase flow, multicomponent reactive transport and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) problems in the subsurface environment. Researchers have employed PFLOTRAN to simulate these Earth system processes on leadership class supercomputers for over two decades. The code is designed to predict the future estate of environmental systems and better inform stakeholders in the regulatory decision making process (e.g., fate of contaminants, long-term stewardship for nuclear waste, impact of climate change, etc.). A diverse team of scientists oversees PFLOTRAN development and maintenance under an open-source licensing agreement and manages contributions from an international community of researchers.

Facilitating Implementation of High-Volume Fly Ash Use in Pre-cast Concrete Construction to Increase Beneficial Utilization

The main goal of this project was to increase the beneficial use of fly ash as a supplementary cementitious material for precast concrete applications. A major focus was to develop balanced concrete mix design strategies which collectively satisfy the follow objectives: 1) increase fly ash beneficial use by at least 15% in the precast concrete industry, 2) maintain or exceed stringent structural property requirements (e.g., compressive strength at initial prestress, modulus of rupture, etc.), 3) exhibit little or no additional cost relative to conventional mixtures, and 4) mitigate detrimental environmental consequences inadvertently caused by increased beneficial use. Outcomes from this project include recommendations for design guidelines and code provisions for sustainable concrete mix designs, facilitating diversion and harvesting of large quantities of fly ash from landfills or impoundments, and multiple frameworks for incorporating discarded fly ash materials (i.e., landfilled or ponded fly ash after separating the impurities) in concrete construction.
