Ordinary electromagnetic mode instability

The instability of the ordinary electromagnetic mode propagating perpendicular to an external magnetic field is studied for a single-species plasma with ring velocity distribution. The marginal instability boundaries for both the purely growing mode and the propagating growing modes are calculated from the instability criteria. The dispersion characteristics for various sets of plasma parameters are also given. The typical growth rates are of the order of the cyclotron frequency.

Effect of Faraday rotation on the circular polarization of the Crab Nebula

The effect of Faraday rotation on the circular polarization of an electromagnetic wave propagating through a magnetized plasma is calculated for various limits of the plasma and wave parameters appropriate to a 30-Hz wave in the Crab Nebula. It is shown that a static magnetic field of the proper geometry and only a few times stronger than the wave field can reduce the circular polarization of the nonlinear inverse Compton radiation to a value below the observed upper limit.-

Ordinary electromagnetic mode instability

The instability of the ordinary electromagnetic mode propagating perpendicular to an external magnetic field is analyzed for a single-species plasma with ring velocity distribution. The marginal instability boundaries for both the purely growing mode and the propagating growing modes are calculated from the instability criteria. The dispersion characteristics are derived for a cold plasma and a very strong static magnetic field. The point is determined at which the real parts of the complex frequency band are centered. The typical growth rates are found to be of the order of the cyclotron frequency and can be enhanced by increasing the ratio of parallel kinetic pressure to magnetic pressure.

The scattering of obliquely incident plane waves from a corrugated conducting surface

A physical optics solution is presented for the scattering of plane waves from a perfectly conducting corrugated surface in the case of waves incident from an arbitrary direction and for an observer far from the surface. This solution is used to compute the radar cross section of the surface in the case of backscatter from irregular (i.e., stochastic) corrugations. An interesting feature of the solution is the occurrence of singularities in the scattered fields. These singularities appear to be a manifestation of focusing by the surface at its 'stationary' points. Whether or not the singularities occur in the solution depends on the manner in which one restricts the analysis to the far-field.

Electromagnetic noise and radio wave propagation below 100 kHz in the Jovian atmosphere. I - The equatorial region

The Galileo satellite program includes the delivery of an entry probe to the Jovian equatorial atmosphere in mid-1985. Optical and RF sensors for a lightning detection system are included as a part of the probe experimental payload. In this paper, calculations of the RF wave propagation and reflection characteristics of the equatorial Jovian atmosphere and ionosphere for frequencies less than 100 kHz are presented. It is shown that wave propagation is limited to line-of-sight and one-hop from the ionosphere. Results are also presented of a statistical treatment of the RF wave power densities for the case of a finite number of events and for the case of a uniformly distributed source. The results can be applied to specific RF experiment configurations concerned with establishing the statistical characteristics of Jovian lightning.

Modified radiative transfer theory for a two-layer random medium

Modified radiative transfer (MRT) equations appropriate for electromagnetic wave propagation in bounded random media are derived from the Bethe-Salpeter equation with the ladder approximation and the Dyson equation with the nonlinear approximation. The MRT equations are then solved with the first-order renormalization approximation to obtain analytical results for the backscattering cross sections of a two-layer random medium with arbitrary three-dimensional correlation functions. The coherent effects of the MRT theory are illustrated and comparisons are made with backscattering cross sections obtained with the first Born approximation to the wave equation.

Scattering of electromagnetic waves from random media with strong permittivity fluctuations

By taking into account the singularity of the dyadic Green's function in the renormalization method, a theory is derived for vector electromagnetic wave propagation in a random medium with large permittivity fluctuations and with anisotropic correlation function. The strong fluctuation theory is then applied to a discrete scatterer problem in which the permittivity can assume only two values. The results are found to be consistent with those derived from discrete scatterer theory for all values of dielectric constants of the scatterers.

Microwave remote sensing: Active and passive. Volume 1 - Microwave remote sensing fundamentals and radiometry

The three components of microwave remote sensing (sensor-scene interaction, sensor design, and measurement techniques), and the applications to geoscience are examined. The history of active and passive microwave sensing is reviewed, along with fundamental principles of electromagnetic wave propagation, antennas, and microwave interaction with atmospheric constituents. Radiometric concepts are reviewed, particularly for measurement problems for atmospheric and terrestrial sources of natural radiation. Particular attention is given to the emission by atmospheric gases, clouds, and rain as described by the radiative transfer function. Finally, the operation and performance characteristics of radiometer receivers are discussed, particularly for measurement precision, calibration techniques, and imaging considerations.

Detailed observations of the source of terrestrial narrowband electromagnetic radiation

Detailed observations are presented of a region near the terrestrial plasmapause where narrowband electromagnetic radiation (previously called escaping nonthermal continuum radiation) is being generated. These observations show a direct correspondence between the narrowband radio emissions and electron cyclotron harmonic waves near the upper hybrid resonance frequency. In addition, electromagnetic radiation propagating in the Z-mode is observed in the source region which provides an extremely accurate determination of the electron plasma frequency and, hence, density profile of the source region. The data strongly suggest that electrostatic waves and not Cerenkov radiation are the source of the banded radio emissions and define the coupling which must be described by any viable theory.

Electron cyclotron wave acceleration outside a flaring loop

A model for the secondary acceleration of electrons outside a flaring loop is proposed. The results suggest that the narrow bandwidth radiation emitted by the unstable electron distribution inside a flaring loop can become the driver for secondary electron acceleration outside the loop. It is shown that a system of electrons gyrating about and streaming along an adiabatically spatially varying, static magnetic field can be efficiently accelerated to high energies by an electromagnetic wave propagating along and polarized transverse to the static magnetic field. The predictions from our model appear to be in general agreement with existing observations.

Self-modulational formation of pulsar microstructures

A nonlinear plasma theory for self-modulation of pulsar radio pulses is discussed. A nonlinear Schroedinger equation is derived for strong electromagnetic waves propagating in an electron-positron plasma. The nonlinearities arising from wave-intensity-induced particle-mass variation may excite the modulational instability of circularly and linearly polarized pulsar radiation. The resulting wave envelopes can take the form of periodic wave trains or solitons. These nonlinear stationary waveforms may account for the formation of pulsar microstructures.

Some aspects of the identification of continuous vibrating systems

This paper deals with the identification of systems described by the one-dimensional, second order wave equation. Such equations arise commonly in various areas of mathematical physics, such as, acoustics, elastic wave propagation, and electromagnetic theory. Assuming that suitable measurements are made at only one point in the spatial domain, sufficient conditions for unique identification of the system eigenvalues and system coefficients are presented.

Remote sensing of earth terrain

Progress on the investigation of the anisotropy of the terrain media, such as vegetation canopy and sea ice, and the study of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem in conjunction with the application of strong fluctuation theory for passive remote sensing of snowpacks is reported. The Feynman diagrammatic technique is used to derive the Dyson equation for the mean field and the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the correlation or the covariance of the field for electromagnetic wave propagation and scattering in an anisotropic random medium. With the random permittivity expressed in a general form, the bilocal and the nonlinear approximations are employed to solve the Dyson equation and the ladder approximation to the Bethe-Salpeter equation. The mean dyadic Green's function for a two layer anisotropic random medium with arbitrary three dimensional correlation function was investigated with the zeroth-order solutions to the Dyson equation under the four characteristic waves associated with the coherent vector fields propagating in an anisotropic random medium layer, which are the ordinary and extraordinary waves with upward and downward propagating vectors.

Nonresonant interaction of heavy ions with electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves

The motion of a heavy ion in the presence of an intense ultralow-frequency electromagnetic wave propagating along the dc magnetic field is analyzed. Starting from the basic equations of motion and from their associated two invariants, the heavy ion velocity-space trajectories are drawn. It is shown that after a certain time, particles whose initial phase angles are randomly distributed tend to bunch together, provided that the wave intensity b-sub-1 is sufficiently large. The importance of these results for the interpretation of the recently observed acceleration of singly charged He ions in conjunction with the occurrence of large-amplitude ion cyclotron waves in the equatorial magnetosphere is discussed.

Electromagnetic wave scattering in a two-layer anisotropic random medium

For electromagnetic wave propagation and scattering in an anisotropic random medium, the Dyson equation for the mean field and the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the correlation or the covariance of the field were derived. With the random permittivity expressed in a general anisotropic form, the bilocal and the nonlinear approximations are employed to solve the Dyson equation, and the ladder approximation to solve the Bethe-Salpeter equation. The mean dyadic Green's function for a two-layer anisotropic random medium with arbitrary three-dimensional correlation functions has been investigated with the zeroth-order solutions to the Dyson equation under the nonlinear approximation. The effective propagation constants are calculated for the four characteristic waves associated with the coherent vector fields, propagating in an anisotropic random-medium layer, which are the ordinary and extraordinary waves with upward- and downward-propagating vectors.

Stability of a spherical shell distribution of pickup ions

The stability of a spherical shell (complete or incomplete) is investigated. The study is motivated by the research of cometary pickup ions. The present discussion is restricted to low-frequency electromagnetic waves propagating along the ambient magnetic field. It is found that a complete shell is stable, whereas an incomplete shell can be unstable. The numerical results are reported and discussed.
