Complicated Magnetic Phases and Presence of Exchange Bias in Off-Stoichiometric Mn{sub 50}Ni{sub 25 + x}In{sub 25−x} Heusler Alloys

The martensitic transformation (MT), magnetic phases, and exchange bias (EB) effect in Mn{sub 50}Ni{sub 25 + x}In{sub 25−x} (x = 14.5∼18) Heusler alloys have been investigated. The MT and magnetic state can be tuned significantly by modifying the Ni/In ratio, while the Curie temperature (T{sub C}) remains almost unchanged. With increase of the Ni/In ratio, the ferromagnetic components in the studied samples decrease continuously, while the antiferromagnetic components increase and it therefore enhances the exchange interaction as well. All of the samples exhibit negative horizontally shifted loops after field-cooled procedure. In addition, the samples with the compositional range of 15 ≤ x ≤ 16 also present the EB effect in zero field-cooled condition. To evaluate the causes of this scenario, EB field and coercive field as a function of temperature and cooling field have been investigated. The experimental results imply that the spin reconfiguration of superspin glass (SSG) clusters and the competition between antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions can account for the behavior of EB effect.

Spin-flop Phase in a Honeycomb Antiferromagnet Mn 0.84 Mg 0.16 TiO 3

The spin-flop phase of a honeycomb antiferromagnet of Mn 0.84 Mg 0.16 TiO 3 has been studied under magnetic field along normal direction to the honeycomb plane by neutron scattering. With increasing a magnetic field from 0 to 5 T, the inelastic scattering intensity increased by 1.5 times at (1 0 0), where the magnetic structure was found to be collinear-antiferromagnet with the spin parallel to [1 1 0] direction. The spin direction is consistent with a 1.5 times increase of the inelastic intensity. Furthermore, the negligible energy difference between K and K' points suggests small values for both Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction and bond-dependent symmetric anisotropic exchange interaction in this material.

The Effects of an Applied Transverse Field in a Graphene-Like Ising Bilayer Film with Nonequivalent Planes

Using the effective field theory with correlations, we have studied the phase diagrams and the thermal variations of total magnetization (m{sub T}) in a graphene-like Ising bilayer film with nonequivalent planes, consisting of two A (spin-1/2) and B (spin-1) planes with an applied transverse field in the B plane. We have investigated the effects of an applied transverse field and the interplane exchange interaction on the magnetic properties. Many interesting behaviors, such as various types of m{sub T} curves and the re-entrant phenomena, have been obtained, depending on the selections of physical parameters.

Observation of coherently coupled cation spin dynamics in an insulating ferrimagnetic oxide

Many technologically useful magnetic oxides are ferrimagnetic insulators, which consist of chemically distinct cations. In this work, we examine the spin dynamics of different magnetic cations in ferrimagnetic NiZnAl-ferrite (Ni 0.65 Zn 0.35 Al 0.8 Fe 1.2 O 4 ) under continuous microwave excitation. Specifically, we employ time-resolved x-ray ferromagnetic resonance to separately probe Fe 2+/3+ and Ni 2+ cations on different sublattice sites. Our results show that the precessing cation moments retain a rigid, collinear configuration to within ≈2°. Moreover, the effective spin relaxation is identical to within <10% for all magnetic cations in the ferrite. Thus, we validate the oft-assumed “ferromagnetic-like” dynamics in the resonantly driven ferrimagnetic oxide: the magnetic moments from different cations precess as a coherent, collective magnetization, despite the high contents of nonmagnetic Zn 2+ and Al 3+ diluting the exchange interactions.

Specificities of Spin Wave Focusing in EuO and EuS Crystals

Specificities of spin wave focusing in EuO and EuS crystals are studied. It is shown that spin wave focusing is absent in the long-wave approximation: it is observed only for wave vectors in the second half of the Brillouin zone (aq≳ π, where a is the lattice constant and q is the magnitude of the wave vector). It was found that, for EuO and EuS crystals, the directions of spin wave focusing differ due to the different signs of the exchange integrals responsible for the exchange interaction of the magnetic moment with the second neighbors. The directions along which a magnon caustic is formed are determined.

Thin-Film Three-Layer Fe/Poly(diphenylene phthalide)/Fe Systems: Structural Properties and Behavior in Magnetic Fields

The structural and magnetic properties of thin-film Fe/poly(diphenylene phthalide) (PDP)/Fe systems are studied, along with the behavior of these systems in magnetic fields. The mean surface roughness of the studied samples is around 5–8 nm, and local near-surface magnetic properties show variation within 10%. The samples are characterized by two-step hysteresis loops, the step size depending on the thickness of the polymer layer and the difference in the thickness between the magnetic layers. The results are explained by the effects the exchange interaction between the magnetic layers, mediated by the PDP interlayer, has on the behavior of our samples in a magnetic field.

Orbital Ordering Effect on Magnetic Resonance Spectra in Charge-Ordered and Frustrated Manganites

A theoretical study of the interrelation of the crystal structure, charge, orbital, and magnetic subsystems in R{sub 1 – x}A{sub x}MnO{sub 3} charge-ordered manganites has been carried out (where R{sup 3+} is the rare earth ion, A{sup 2+} is the alkaline earth metal ion, x = 0.5, 2/3). The model of orbital-dependent exchange interactions and single-ion anisotropy is used. The presence of quasi-low-dimensional magnetic structures is exhibited. The spin waves spectra and antiferromagnetic resonance spectra are calculated.

Anomalous temperature-dependent magnetization in the nearly collinear antiferromagnet Y 2 Co 3

Y 2 Co 3 is a newly discovered antiferromagnetic (AFM) compound with distorted kagome layers. Here, previous investigations via bulk magnetization measurements suggested a complex non-collinear magnetic behavior, with magnetic moments primarily anti-aligned along the b axis and some canting towards the ac plane. In this study, we report the magnetic structure of Y 2 Co 3 to be an A-type AFM structure with ferromagnetic (FM) interactions within the distorted kagome plane and an inter-plane antiferromagnetic interaction, as determined by single crystal neutron diffraction. The magnetic moments align along the b axis, with minimal canting towards the c axis, at odds with the previous interpretation of bulk magnetization measurements. The magnetic moments on the two distinct Co sites are (0, -0.68, 0) μB and (0, 1.25, 0.07) μ B . We attribute the previously reported ”non-collinear” behavior to the considerable temperature dependence of itinerant AFM exchange interactions, induced by thermal contraction along the b axis. Additionally, our examination of lattice constants through pressure studies reveals compensating effects on FM and AFM interactions, resulting in negligible pressure dependence of T N .

Electronic Structure and Ferromagnetism in Zincblende Zn{sub 1−x}Co{sub x}S Nanoparticles

We have prepared Zn{sub 1−x}Co{sub x}S nanoparticles (NPs) and studied their local-geometric, electronic, and magnetic properties. X-ray diffraction analyses have indicated that NPs with average crystallite sizes of 2.2 ∼ 2.9 nm are single phase and crystallize in the zincblende-type structure. Cobalt ions with oxidation state + 2 (Co{sup 2+}) replaced for Zn{sup 2+} and almost unchanged the zincblende-type structure of the ZnS host lattice. Interestingly, all samples show room-temperature ferromagnetism and ferromagnetic order increases with increasing Co content (x) in Zn{sub 1−x}Co{sub x}S NPs. With the results obtained from analyzing the local-geometric structures at Zn and Co K-edges and photoluminescence spectra, we believe that ferromagnetism in Zn{sub 1−x}Co{sub x}S NPs is related to intrinsic defects and exchange interactions between Co{sup 2+} ions. We have also reviewed the recent studies on ZnS-based dilute-magnetic materials.

Impact of further-range exchange and cubic anisotropy on magnetic excitations in the fcc kagome antiferromagnet IrMn 3

Here, this work investigates the effects of further neighbor exchange and cubic anisotropy on the magnetic excitations of the fcc kagome antiferromagnet IrMn 3 . Spin wave frequencies are calculated using the torque equation and the dynamical structure factor S(Q,ω) is determined by a Green's function method as an extension of our previous work [LeBlanc et al. Phys. Rev. B 90, 144403 (2014)]. These spin wave calculations are compared with inelastic neutron scattering data of polycrystalline IrMn 3 , where magnetic Mn ions occupy lattice sites of ABC-stacked kagome planes. The data are best explained by a spin wave model including exchange interactions up to fourth nearest neighbor and strong cubic anisotropy, as previously predicted by density functional theory calculations.

Spin Polarization Dynamics of Nonequilibrium Conduction Electrons in Magnetic Junctions

The dynamics of the motion of the magnetic moment averaged over an ensemble of nonequilibrium spin-injected electrons in a ferromagnetic junction is considered with allowance for the exchange interaction, as well as the interaction with an external electromagnetic field and a thermostat. The solution of this problem is important for the experimental development of compact terahertz-band radiation sources. The rate of quantum transitions of electrons with opposite spins, which determine the spin relaxation under the interaction with a thermostat, is calculated within the density matrix formalism. It is shown that two spin-relaxation modes can be implemented that correspond to low- and high-Q precession of spin-nonequilibrium injected electrons. The effect of the characteristic features of spin-flip transitions under the relaxation of the magnetic moment on the emission and absorption of photons with-energy corresponding to the energy of effective exchange splitting of spin subbands is discussed.

Tunable Optical Behaviour and Room Temperature Ferromagnetism of Cobalt-Doped BaSnO{sub 3} Nanostructures

In this work, the effect of Co doping on the structural, vibrational, morphological, optical and magnetic behaviour of BaSnO{sub 3} nanostructures is reported. Pure and Co (1,3, and 5%)-doped barium stannate (BSO) nanostructures were prepared by conventional hydrothermal technique followed by calcination at 900 °C for 5 h. The single crystalline cubic phase was identified by XRD analysis and structural distortions associated with Co doping were evidenced by variation in microstarin and crystallite size. FTIR and Raman studies further confirm the structural quality of the prepared samples. FESEM analysis revealed the mixed morphology of prepared samples, and the chemical compositions of all the samples were analysed using EDAX studies. The absorption studies revealed the incorporation of dopant ions and their effect on the bandgap subsequently in samples. The presence of defects and paramagnetic centres in the samples were confirmed by PL and EPR analyses. Magnetization studies demonstrated that pure BSO exhibits characteristic diamagnetism at room temperature and the addition of Co into Ba–Sn–O lattice drives the F-centre exchange interactions which results in the ferromagnetic behaviour. Hence, the occurrence of diamagnetic to ferromagnetic transition at room temperature with addition of Co as a dopant was identified.

Extreme sensitivity of the magnetic ground state to halide composition in FeCl 3 – x Br x

Mixed halide chemistry has recently been utilized to tune the intrinsic magnetic properties of transition-metal halides—one of the largest families of magnetic van der Waals materials. Prior studies have shown that the strength of exchange interactions, hence the critical temperature, can be tuned smoothly with halide composition for a given ground state. Here we show that the ground state itself can be altered by a small change of halide composition in FeCl 3–$x$ Br $x$ . Specifically, we find a threefold jump in the Néel temperature and a sign change in the Weiss temperature at $x$=0.08 corresponding to only 3% bromine doping. Using neutron scattering, we reveal a change of the ground state from spiral order in FeCl 3 to $A$-type antiferromagnetic order in FeBr 3 . From first-principles calculations, we show that a delicate balance between nearest and next-nearest neighbor interactions is responsible for such a transition. In conclusion, these results demonstrate how varying the halide composition can tune the competing interactions and change the ground state of a spiral spin liquid system.

Topology and ground state control in open-shell donor-acceptor conjugated polymers

Donor-acceptor (DA) conjugated polymers (CPs) with narrow bandgaps and open-shell (diradical) character represent an emerging class of materials whose rich behavior emanates from their collective electronic properties and diminished electron pairing. However, the structural and electronic heterogeneities that define these materials complicate bandgap control at low energies and connections linking topology, exchange interactions, and (opto)electronic functionality remain nascent. To address these challenges, we demonstrate structurally rigid and strongly π-conjugated copolymers comprised of a solubilizing thiadiazoloquinoxaline acceptor and cyclopenta[2,1-b:3,4-b']dithiophene or dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]thiophene donors. Atom-specific substitution modulates local aromatic character within the donor resulting in dramatic differences in structural, physicochemical, electronic, and magnetic properties of the polymers. These long-range π-mediated interactions facilitate control between low-spin aromatic and high-spin quinoidal forms. This work provides a strategy to understand the evolution of the electronic structure within DA CPs, control the ground state spin multiplicity, tune spin-spin interactions, and articulate the emergence of their novel properties.

Effect of the Milling Conditions on the Properties of ZnO Doped with Fe

(Zn{sub 0.9}Fe{sub 0.1})O powders were produced with different ball to powder weight ratios (BPR) by ball milling of ZnO and Fe elemental powders. The BPR used were 15:1, 20:1, 25:1, and 30:1. The prepared samples were studied by x-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS). The XRD patterns showed a zinc oxide (ZnO) single phase with wurtzite structure, except for the 15:1 ratio, which exhibits an additionally bcc structure associated to α-Fe. The mean crystallite sizes were found to be around 100 Å. The Mössbauer spectra were fitted using two doublets, associated to the incorporation of Fe ions into the ZnO lattice, which correspond to the Fe{sup 3+} and Fe{sup 2+} oxidation states except for the 15:1 ratio, for which an additional sextet was necessary to obtain a good fit, this sextet was associated to segregated Fe into the sample. The increase of the BPR allowed that all Fe penetrated into the ZnO matrix. The magnetization measurement using VSM reveals that the system exhibits ferromagnetic behavior at room temperature. For sample with BPR 15:1, the ferromagnetism is due to the segregated Fe, and for higher BPRs, from 20:1 up to 30:1, we propose that their ferromagnetism is due to the percolation of polarons. These polarons appear due to the oxygen vacancies (detected by XRD) which are occupied by electrons, which appear in the charge balance. Exchange interaction between the electron spins located in the vacancies or holes and those of the magnetic impurities (Fe atoms) leads to the formation of bound magnetic polarons, which percolate, producing in this way magnetic behavior.

Weakly coupled alternating S = 1 2 chains in the distorted honeycomb lattice compound Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6

Spin- 1 2 chains with alternating antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) couplings exhibit quantum entanglement as the integer-spin Haldane chains and might be similarly utilized for quantum computations. Such alternating AF-FM chains have been proposed to be realized in the distorted honeycomb lattice compound Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 , but to confirm this picture a comprehensive understanding of the exchange interactions including terms outside of the idealized model is required. Here, we employ neutron scattering to study the spin dynamics in Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 and accurately determine the coupling strengths through the random phase approximation and density functional theory approaches. We find the AF and FM intrachain couplings are the dominant terms in the spin Hamiltonian, while the interchain couplings are AF but perturbative. This hierarchy in the coupling strengths and the alternating signs of the intrachain couplings can be understood through their different exchange paths. Our results establish Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 as a weakly coupled alternating AF-FM chain compound and reveal the robustness of the gapped ground state in alternating chains under weak interchain couplings.

Spin Glass in a Geometrically Frustrated Magnet of ZnFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} Nanoparticles

We investigated the magnetic properties of a geometrically frustrated magnet of ZnFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} nanoparticles by carrying out the comprehensive measurements of dc magnetization and ac susceptibility. Spin glass is confirmed to occur in this weakly Fe(Zn)-ionic-inversed sample. The common characteristics of spin glass including the aging, the memory, and the rejuvenation effects were observed. By using the critical-power law to study the spin dynamics, the spin-glass transition temperature T{sub g} is obtained to be 18 K and the dynamic exponent zν is 8.0. The weak exchange interaction disorder introduced by the ferrimagnetic J{sub AB} interaction, together with the weak nonmagnetic dilute disorder induced by the ionic inversion, is responsible for the formation of spin glass in the ZnFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} nanoparticles.

Existence conditions are found for phases with the dipole order parameter (AFM phases) and tensor parameters (OQU phases), as well as for intermediate states characterized by both vector and tensor parameters. Conditions for phase transitions and their types are determined.
