Cross-correlation image analysis for real-time single particle tracking

Accurately measuring the translations of objects between images is essential in many fields, including biology, medicine, chemistry, and physics. One important application is tracking one or more particles by measuring their apparent displacements in a series of images. Popular methods, such as the center of mass, often require idealized scenarios to reach the shot noise limit of particle tracking and, therefore, are not generally applicable to multiple image types. More general methods, such as maximum likelihood estimation, reliably approach the shot noise limit, but are too computationally intense for use in real-time applications. These limitations are significant, as real-time, shot-noise-limited particle tracking is of paramount importance for feedback control systems. To fill this gap, we introduce a new cross-correlation-based algorithm that approaches shot-noise-limited displacement detection and a graphics processing unit-based implementation for real-time image analysis of a single particle.

Roles of non-axisymmetric perturbations in free drift vertical displacement events on EAST

Abstract The safe operation of most tokamaks, especially the large ones, relies on the feedback control of vertical displacement events (VDEs). However, most of these feedback control systems are based on axisymmetric VDE models. In this study, we use NIMROD simulations to study the role of non-axisymmetric perturbations in free drift vertical displacement events on EAST. The high- n modes in the non-axisymmetric VDE grow first, which drives the formation of high- n magnetic island chains. Subsequently, the magnetic island chains grow and overlap with each other, leading to the destruction of the magnetic flux surface, which induces a minor disruption and accelerates the start of the following major disruption. The magnetic island and the stochastic magnetic field allow the toroidally non-axisymmetric poloidal plasma current to jet towards the hoop force direction, forming finger-like and filamentary structures. Such a plasma current non-axisymmetry strongly depends on the anisotropy in the thermal transport coefficients.

Overview of Wendelstein 7-X high-performance operation

The Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator has completed two consecutive experimental campaigns OP 2.2 (Sep.-Dec. 2024) and OP 2.3 (Feb.-May 2025) under a new operational strategy enabling more than one year of uninterrupted device availability. This approach, supported by exceptionally high subsystem reliability, allowed sustained high-efficiency plasma operations with up to 80–100 discharges per day across a broad range of magnetic configurations. Several key technical upgrades-most notably the first operation of a 1.5 MW class steady-state gyrotron, a new steady-state pellet injector, and advanced real-time feedback control systems significantly enhanced heating, fueling, and plasma control capabilities. Together, these improvements enabled major advances in long-pulse performance, high-β operation, and confinement optimization. Long-pulse discharges achieved 1.8 GJ of injected energy under fully detached divertor conditions, while reduced-field scenarios facilitated record volume-averaged β values approaching 3%. High-performance plasmas with centrally peaked density profiles, created via neutral beam injection (NBI) or sustained pellet fueling, demonstrated strongly reduced turbulent transport and stellarator-record fusion triple products. Complementary studies of power exhaust and divertor heat loads revealed the role of scrape-off-layer drift physics in shaping strike-line patterns under attached conditions. Together, the results from OP 2.2 and OP 2.3 significantly expand the operational space of W7-X and strengthen its role as a leading platform for steady-state stellarator research and reactor-relevant plasma scenarios.

Computing and data transmission for the prediction steering of the Goonhilly satellite-communication aerial

The Goonhilly satellite-communication aerial uses an 85-ft. diameter paraboloidal reflector with waveguide feed at the focus. The aerial is movable in azimuth and elevation, and is provided with independent feedback control systems for these two motions. During a satellite pass, the aerial must be steered so that its axis points continuously, and with high accuracy, in the direction of the satellite. Of the various possible methods of achieving this result, that based on prediction of satellite position has been adopted for the first transatlantic communication experiments using the Telstar and Relay satellites. The process by which orbital predictions originating in the USA are converted to substantially continuous real-time azimuth and elevation pointing instructions at Goonhilly is described herein.

Experimental Hingeless Rotor Characteristics at Full Scale First Flap Mode Frequencies (including Rotor Frequency Response to Shaft Oscillations), Phase 3

The completion of the High Advance Ratio Research Program is reported. The primary objectives of the program were to experimentally determine the rotor frequency response to shaft pitching and rolling oscillations and to acquire steady response and frequency response data at high advance ratios for hingeless rotors with typical, full-scale, first flap mode natural frequencies. Secondary objectives of the program included the further evaluation of both the hub moment feedback control system and the simplified rigid blade flapping theory with respect to shaft oscillations. The bulk of the text is devoted to the presentation and examination of representative experimental results. All the analyzed test data are documented in tabular and/or graphical formats.
