Property Measurements of LiF-NaF-KF Molten Salts Doped with Surrogate Fission Products

Measurements of molten salt properties including transition temperatures, phase behavior, heat capacity, density, volumetric thermal expansion, surface tension, viscosity thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity, and vapor pressure are performed at Argonne. The properties of several fuel and coolant salts including eutectic LiF-NaF-KF (FLiNaK) have been measured. These properties are suitable for use in evaluating reactor performance during startup and early operating conditions.

Develop and Connect TRISO Failure Analysis and Uncertainty Quantification to Fission Product Release Calculation Capability

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) program aims to develop predictive capabilities by applying computational methods to the analysis and design of advanced reactor and fuel cycle systems. This program has been providing engineering-scale support for the development of BISON, a high-fidelity and high-resolution fuel performance tool. Stress-based failure probability has been developed and analyzed to assess the integrity of tri-structural isotropic (TRISO) fuel particles during fuel life cycles. While simple, stress-based approaches to failure probability leveraging the Weibull statistical distribution entails a number of drawbacks when stress concentration occurs near crack tips, including finite element mesh size dependency. In this report, we use an interaction integral approach to the computation of stress intensity factors in functionally graded materials (FGM) for axisymmetric models. The inner pyrolytic carbon (IPyC) cracking induced silicon carbide (SiC) failure is one of the dominated failure modes in TRISO failure analysis. In this study, we consider a crack in the IPyC layer perpendicular to the SiC layer. The interface between these two TRISO layers is considered to be porous, which we simulate considering a transition of mechanical properties over the porous length. These aspects are considered in the computation of stress intensity factor (SIF) from a fracture mechanics approach and compared with the known stress-based failure probability approach.

Energy Dependent Fission Product Yields

This project utilized a 10-meter Fast Transfer System (called RABITTS) and Decay Station. FPYs are measured using neutron activation of U-235 and Pu-239 followed by gamma ray spectroscopy. We irradiated targets with mono-energetic neutrons produced at the TUNL tandem accelerator laboratory. The gamma spectra collected in these target irradiations are being analyzed to determine FPY values.

Improved decay data for the long-lived fission products 147 Nd, 111 Ag, and 156 Eu

We have completed the successful campaign on improving the branching ratios following the decay of 147 Nd with the publication of our manuscript titled “Precise measurements of the γ-ray intensities following the β decay of 144 Ce and 147 Nd” in Phys Rev C. Continuing the work this collaboration, we have results on the decay of 156 Eu that report updated intensities with reduced uncertainties of most intense emissions by an order of magnitude or more. We expect to submit our manuscript to Phys Rev C with these results on 156 Eu in the upcoming weeks.

Effect of Surrogate Fission Products on Thermal Conductivity and Viscosity of NaCl-UCl 3

Thermophysical properties of salt systems relevant to molten salt reactors (MSRs) are experimentally measured in support of the US Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE) MSR campaign within the Advanced Reactor Technology (ART) Program. These property measurements also support the development of the thermophysical arm of the Molten Salt Database (MSD) within DOE-NE’s Nu clear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) Program. Several US Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories, including Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), have been capitalizing on modern methodologies and sample characterization techniques to conduct thermophysical property measurements to support these programs and to provide MSR developers and modelers with more recent and higher-quality data.

Reconstruction of Fission Product Distribution from Tomographic Scans in TRISO Fuel Graphitic Matrix and Nuclear Grade Graphites

An image reconstruction method was developed to rectify shortcomings of earlier methods that became apparent as destructively sampled data became available. This reconstruction method was applied to the tomographic gamma scans of nuclear graphite and graphitic matrix samples from AGR-3/4. There is generally agreement between profiles measured via destructive sampling of these rings and profiles from tomographic reconstruction.

Effects of Neutron Irradiation on the Micro/Nano Scale Structure and Fission Product Distribution of TRISO Coated Particle Fuel Kernels from AGR Experiments

The Advanced Reactor Technologies (ART) Program at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) includes the Advanced Gas Reactor (AGR) fuel development and qualification program that consists of fuel fabrication, experiment irradiations, post-irradiation examination (PIE) and safety testing to assess tristructural isotropic (TRISO) fuel performance during normal irradiation and under potential accident conditions. Advanced microscopy work on selected AGR-1 and AGR-2 unirradiated and irradiated fuel specimens is performed as part of the PIE effort. PIE work on fuel from the first experiment irradiation, AGR-1, began at INL in April 2010, and AGR-2 PIE began at INL in July 2014. This work scope includes University of Florida (UF) performing advanced electron microscopy examination and analysis using facilities at the Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES), INL or UF’s electron microscopy facilities. Electron microscopic examination and analysis may include scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area diffraction (SAD), electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and atom probe tomography (APT) on the fuel kernels of TRISO-coated fuel particles. The electron microscopy lamellae will be provided by INL and will be available at CAES or Irradiated Materials Characterization Laboratory (IMCL).

Nuclear Data Needs for Radiochemistry

There are many elements of interest to the weapons community that include light elements, activation products, fission products, actinides and heavy elements. Of course, that is the whole periodic table! In this memo we summarize a down-selected list, 22 of 118+ of elements that have or could serve as radiochemical diagnostic measurements. The simulations would need cross sections for nuclides (and metastable states) of these elements to be able to calculate values for comparison with debris measurements.
