Lubricating characteristics of polyimide bonded graphite fluoride and polyimide thin films

A friction and wear life study was conducted on the use of a polyimide (PI) varnish as a binder for the solid lubricant, graphite fluoride (CF(1.1))N. Also studied were the lubricating properties of PI thin films with no solid lubricant additives. For comparison, similar experiments on PI-bonded MoS2 and burnished films of MoS2 or (CF(li))N were conducted. The best results were obtained with the PI-bonded (CF(1.1))N films. The polyimide thin films (with no solid lubricant additives) did not lubricate well at 25 C; however, when heated to 100 C, low friction and long wear lives were obtained.

Criticality experiments and analysis of molybdenum reflected cylindrical uranyl fluoride water solution reactors

Clean criticality data were obtained from molybdenum-reflected cylindrical uranyl-fluoride-water solution reactors. Using ENDF/B molybdenum cross sections, a nine energy group two-dimensional transport calculation of a reflected reactor configuration predicted criticality to within 7 cents of the experimental value. For these reactors, it was necessary to compute the reflector resonance integral by a detailed transport calculation at the core-reflector interface volume in the energy region of the two dominant resonances of natural molybdenum.

Plasma-sprayed metal-glass and metal-glass fluoride coatings for lubrication to 900 C

Plasma-sprayed composites, which have good oxidation-resistance and self-lubricating characteritics to 900 C, were developed. The composites are a nichrome matrix containing dispersed glass for oxidation protection and calcium fluoride for lubrication; they are applied to bearing surfaces by plasma spraying layers about 0.050 centimeters thick which are then machined to 0.025 centimeters. Oscillating bearing tests were performed in air to 900 C at unit radial loads up to 3.5 x 10 to the 7th power N/sq M (5000 psi) and a thrust load of 1960N (440 lbs). Bearings with a composite liner in the bore were in good condition after over 50,000 oscillating cycles accumulated during repeated, bearing temperatures cycles between 25 and 900 C.

Lubricating characteristics of polyimide bonded graphite fluoride and polyimide thin films.

A friction and wear life study was conducted on the use of a polyimide (PI) varnish as a binder for the solid lubricant, graphite fluoride (CF sub 1.1) sub n. Also studied were the lubricating properties of PI thin films with no solid lubricant additives. For comparison, similar experiments on PI-bonded MoS2 and burnished films of MoS2 or (CF sub 1.1) sub n were conducted. The best results were obtained with the PI-bonded (CF sub 1.1) sub n films. The polyimide thin films (with no solid lubricant additives) did not lubricate well at 25 C; however, when heated to 100 C, low friction and long wear lives were obtained.
